This ground breaking analysis cuts to the heart of the critical debate surrounding the two Thessalonian Epistles. Colin R. Nicholl examines the situations giving rise to each Letter with a view to determining how the two relate historically. His book presents an original and compelling hypothesis, arguing that reflected in the Letters are two stages of a single crisis plaguing a recently formed Greek Church, which spiralled from hope into despair on account of confusion about 'the end'. In addition to making a fresh case for the authenticity of 2 Thessalonians and resolving one of the most difficult problems in the Bible - the identity of 'the Restrainer' - this monograph is a comprehensive analysis of the Thessalonian Epistles. It will provide an indispensable resource for scholars and pastors interested in the Thessalonian correspondence.

The 1974 estimate by Interpretation that Ernest Best's volume on 1 & 2 Thessalonians “is probably the best exegetical study of 1 and 2 Thessalonians available ... a superb commentary” continues to ring true forty years later. This is indeed one of the finest commentaries on 1 & 2 Thessalonians available-in any language. The Journal of Theological Studies called it “exhaustive” and concluded that the commentary is “reliable, judicious, and nearly always lucid. He [Best] ... takes us as far as we can reasonably go in understanding the mind of Paul as it expressed itself in these writings.”

A 2001 Christianity Today Book of the Year! While patristic commentary on St. Paul's shorter letters--Colossians, 1-2 Thessalonians, the Pastorals and Philemon--was not so extensive as that on his longer letters, certain passages in these letters proved particularly important in doctrinal disputes and practical church matters. Pivotal in controversies with the Arians and the Gnostics, the most commented-upon christological text amid these letters was Colossians 1:15-20, where Jesus is declared "the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation." In other texts scattered throughout the Pastorals, the fathers found ample support for the divinity of the Son and the Spirit and for the full union of humanity and divinity in the one redeemer, the "one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus" (1 Timothy 2:5). These early Christian commentators also looked to the Pastorals, where Pauline authorship was assumed, for important ethical and moral teaching, as well as explicit qualifications for choosing church leaders and guidelines for overseeing the work and behavior of widows. Chief among the Eastern commentators and widely excerpted throughout this volume is John Chrysostom, praised for his pastoral insight and shrewd, generous empathy with the apostle Paul. Other Greek commentators whose works are cited include Theodoret of Cyr, Theodore of Mopsuestia, Severian of Gabala, Ignatius of Antioch, Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Clement of Alexandria, Athanasius, Basil the Great, Gregory of Nazianzus and Gregory of Nyssa. Among Western commentators Augustine dominates. His work is joined by that of Ambrosiaster, Pelagius, Jerome, Hippolytus, Tertullian, Novatian, Cyprian of Carthage, Hilary of Poitiers and Ambrose, among others. Of particular interest for their ascetical and devotional insight are works from Syrian and Egyptian churches, including Aphrahat, Ephrem the Syrian, Isaac of Nineveh and Philoxenus of Mabbug. This volume opens up a treasure house of ancient wisdom that allows these faithful witnesses, some appearing here in English translation for the first time, to speak with eloquence and intellectual acumen to the church today.

The second coming of Jesus Christ has profound implications for how Christians live today. Paul shows in his letters to the Thessalonians that the whole of the Christian life—especially our experience of suffering and our work in ministry—is changed when we live in light of the gospel. In this commentary, pastor James H. Grant Jr. applies Paul’s message to contemporary churches by moving expositionally through 1 & 2 Thessalonians, covering both personal and corporate concerns. This volume traces how Paul shares about events in his life and addresses issues in the church of Thessalonica, unpacking the power of the gospel and what it means for our lives today. The apostle Paul wrote 1 Corinthians to a church struggling with their identity as Christians. Designed to help modern readers understand and apply this biblical letter to their own lives—especially when it comes to fighting sin and interacting with a fallen world—this commentary by pastor Stephen Um explains the biblical text with clarity and insight. Part of Crossway’s award-winning Preaching the Word commentary series, this volume uses powerful illustrations, engaging anecdotes, and practical applications to help readers truly engage with God’s Word in a powerful and authentic way. Furthermore, pastors, teachers, and small group leaders will find valuable assistance in preparing to lead others through the biblical text. Part of the Preaching the Word series.
