The final volume discusses the institutions that affected social conditions and influenced values and attitudes. Social policies were made for the most part by the comfortably off and those in power for the supposed good of the less fortunate. Contributors to this volume examine these initiatives with regard to, among others, the development of health care, philanthropy and the voluntary sector, the police and crime, professional associations and unions.

The final stage of Simon Schama's epic voyage around Britain spans centuries, crosses the breadth of the empire and covers a vast expanse of topics - from the birth of feminism to the fate of freedom. The Fate of the Empire asks crucial questions about the nature of empire, journeying from celebrations of industrial and imperialist power at the Great Exhibition, to the catastrophic Irish potato famine and the Indian Mutiny. Through the military and economic shocks and traumas of our past, Schama asks the question that is still with us - is the immense weight of our history a blessing or a curse, a gift or a millstone around the neck of our future? This third and final volume in the series is a vast compelling history, made more so by the lively storytelling and big bold characters at the heart of the action. But alongside flamboyant heroes, like Nelson and Churchill, Schama recalls unsung heroines and virtually unknown enemies. Alongside the grand ideas, he exposes the grand illusions that cost untold lives.

The third volume of The Agrarian History of England and Wales, dealing with the last century and a half of the middle ages, follows the general pattern of the second volume which described the generations of agricultural expansion between the time of Domesday and of the Black Death. The third volume, however, concerns itself with the new demographic and economic circumstances created in large measure by endemic plague, and how these circumstances influenced patterns of settlement in the countryside, farming practices and the structure of rural society, both at the level of landlords and in the villages. An attempt is made to distinguish the special influence of general circumstances in the different regions of late medieval England and Wales. The volume includes a study of the marketing of agricultural produce in the period 1200-1500, detailed analyses of the movements of prices and wages in the countryside, a review of peasant rebellions and discontent centered on the revolts of 1381, and a chapter devoted to rural building in England and Wales.
