Now considered a classic among readers interested in Tibetan Buddhism and pilgrimages of the spirit of all kinds, A Journey in Ladakh is Andrew Harvey's spiritual travelogue of his arduous journey to one of the most remote parts of the world--the highest, least populated region in India, cut off by snow for six months each year. Buddhists have meditated in the mountains of Ladakh since three centuries before Christ, and it is there that the purest form of Tibetan Buddhism is still practiced today.

Seeking respite from a novel that has hit an impasse, Vikramajit Ram accepts an invitation from his friend Manoj Bawa to join him on a drive to Ladakh. It is the start of the Himalayan summer of 2009; the high mountain passes have just opened for the season. As the journey progresses, Vikram finds that the quirky company at the wheel and the otherworldly beauty of this Shangri La are the perfect fix for his jaded senses. On a high - literal and metaphoric - on the Highest Motorable Pass in the World, he abandons his doomed work of fiction to write instead of this journey. The outcome derives its title from the Ladakhi words for 'lake and 'pass . Weaving together elements of art and architecture, natural history and biography, Tso and La is a tribute to this enigmatic and deeply mystical corner of India. Against a backdrop of uncontainable grandeur, Manoj and Vikram find prayer flags and child-monks, magpies and wild asses, vast glacial lakes and surreal sand dunes. Four weeks and 8,200 kilometres later, the friends return home to Bangalore. One throws himself into a new job; the other embarks on a new journey of words.

This culmination of award-winning author Andrew Harvey’s life’s work bridges the great divide between spiritual resignation and engaged spiritual activism. A manifesto for the transformation of the world through the fusion of deep mystical peace with the clarity of radical wisdom, it is a wake-up call to put love and compassion to urgent, focused action. According to Harvey, we are in a massive global crisis reflected by a mass media addicted to violence and trivialization at a moment when what the world actually needs is profound inspiration, a return to the heart-centered way of the Divine Feminine, the words of the mystics throughout the ages, and the cultivation of the nonviolent philosophies of Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Aung San Suu Kyi, and the Dalai Lama. Harvey’s concepts of radical passion and sacred activism fly in the face of restraint, of pessimism, of denial, of all that is inhumane, fusing the mystic’s passion for God with the activist’s passion for justice and for healing the division between heaven and earth, heart and will, body and soul, prayer and action. Sacred activism asks that we engage deeply on a personal, spiritual, and political level so as to become a fully empowered, fully active, and contemplative humanity that can turn tragedy into grace, and desolation into the opportunity to build and co-create a new world. Unlike many spiritual books, Radical Passion does not veil the dark with artificial hope. It explores the catastrophes of our current times and celebrates the ecstatic hope and divinity that is possible—right now and in the future. From the Trade Paperback edition.

When Ippolito Desideri's Historical Notices of Tibet (Notizie Istoriche del Tibet) first appeared in an abridged English translation in 1932, it was soon recognized as a classic for its richly detailed descriptions of Tibetan social, cultural, and religious life. The Italian missionary was most notably the first Westerner to learn about Buddhism directly with Tibetan scholars and from a profound study of its primary texts. He was also an eyewitness to some of the most tumultuous events in Tibet's history, of which he left us a vivid and dramatic account. Unfortunately the earlier translation omitted, truncated, or paraphrased much of Desideri's text, especially his comprehensive treatment of Tibetan religion and key Buddhist concepts such as emptiness and rebirth together with their philosophical and ethical implications. The present unabridged and engrossing English translation redresses those omissions. Richly annotated, it also includes an introduction situating the work in the context of Desideri's life and his intellectual and religious milieu.
