Among the highlights of this book documenting twenty years in the life and work of a major Texas artist is Watkins’s creation of the double-walled caldron that has become his forte. Offering an extensive photographic explanation of Watkins’s techniques, the book shows how the vessels are built, how various materials are used to create different surfaces, how clay slips are made from organic materials collected at the various sites Watkins often visits in Texas, and how both technology and serendipity are part of the firing process. Describing the construction and the aesthetics of Watkins’s pottery, the book also illustrates the influence of place and experience—both externally and in dreams and memories. Drawing upon his love for the land and nature of the American Southwest, Watkins also derives inspiration from memories of growing up in rural Alabama in the 1960s; the influence of various teachers; his African-American heritage; and his belief in the power of dreams. Readers will discover the rare beauty of parts of the American Southwest not often seen and how those landscapes translate into the aesthetic. Watkins, a professor in the Texas Tech University College of Architecture, blends the subject of his teaching—drawing—into his ceramic work. His work has been included in the White House Collection of American Crafts exhibit and in the Smithsonian Institution.

This is the Siddur, or Jewish prayer book, with summaries of Chasidic excerpts designed to help the person incorporate Chasidic concepts into his or her prayers. The summaries include a quotation, kaballistic elements of the excerpt, chasidic elements of the excerpt, and a section called "Within the Words" designed to explain how to apply the summary to our prayers. In addition there is a separate commentary demonstrating the correlation of our prayers to the spiritual levels discussed in "Love like Fire and Water (A guide to Jewish Meditation)." The latter is a translation of Kuntres Haavoda of the Rebbe Rashab.

A book of modern mysticism about rediscovering the true meaning of faith and how to reclaim our spiritual wisdom. Light on Fire is the soulful exploration of one woman's journey to awakening and becoming a modern-day Christian mystic. It's a compassionate guide that will support others on the path to awakening by offering new insights and practical guidance on how to reconnect with our innate spirituality. In her search to understand her own spontaneous awakening, Aedamar discovered that awakening is a natural life process from which we have become estranged. In beautifully poetic language, and through accessible philosophy, Aedamar shares how and why we are designed to wake up, and to experience Divine Union, in the ordinary course of life. Waking up is what is now needed to heal ourselves and the deeply rooted traumas of Western society. Light on Fire concludes with 'The Path of Gold', Aedamar's seven-stage guide to awakening that offers a model for rediscovering Divine Love in everyday life. It helps us to reconnect with our spiritual wisdom, which is critical as we enter a new era that uniquely calls us to mysticism and to love.

To the unstudied eye, St. Matthew's gospel can seem a terse narrative, almost a historical document and not the tremendously spiritual (and doctrinal) storehouse that it is. In his third volume of meditations on Matthew (chapters 19-25), Erasmo Leiva continues to show Matthew's prose to be not terse so much as economical--astoundingly so given its depth. The lay reader can derive great profit from reading this. Each short meditation comments on a verse or two, pointing to some facet of the text not immediately apparent, but rich with meaning. Leiva's work is scholarly but eminently approachable by the lay reader. The tone is very much of "taste and see how good the Lord is" and an invitation of "friend, come up higher!." The goal of the book is to help the reader experience the heat of the divine heart and the light of the divine Word. Leiva comments on the Greek text, demonstrating nuances in the text that defy translation. He uses numerous quotes from the Fathers and the Liturgy of the Church to demonstrate the way the Tradition has lived and read the Word of God. His theological reflection vivifies doctrine by seeking its roots in the words and actions of Jesus.

In a verse-by-verse reading of a chapter on devotion from the well-known Indian scripture, the Bhagavad Gita, Easwaran offers practical wisdom, stories, and insights to guide us through the challenges of everyday love. Our deepest need is to love completely, universally, without reservation - in other words, to become love itself. This book is Easwaran's commentary on Chapter 12 of the Bhagavad Gita, and is taken from Like a Thousand Suns (The Bhagavad Gita for Daily Living Volume 2, chapter 7-12), with a new introduction from Easwaran.

"Tending the Fire: Through War and The Path of Meditation " Raised on a South Carolina sea island, tempered by experiences in the Vietnam War, and trained as a psychotherapist, Ralph Steele decided midlife that tending the fire of his life would be to take robes as a forest monk in Thailand and Myanmar-for a year or for a lifetime. He left his career and twenty-year relationship without knowing if he would return. " Tending the Fire " is the gripping, enlightening, and very human story of Ralph's transformative journey through war and meditation to a sense of wholeness, responsibility, peace, and compassion. Partial Endorsements: "Ralph Steele's memoir will be of great value, an inspiration for many who are seeking release from ignorance and suffering" " Ajahn " Sumedho "A beautifully written, humbling, uplifting, and profoundly sweet and electrifying life story illustrating the transformative value of the cultivation of mindfulness . . ." ASTRAL FIRE: A MEDITATION ON SPIRITUAL JAZZ AS MODELED BY FIVE SAXOPHONE PLAYERS, 1969-1979 Jonathan Greenstein Doctor of Musical Arts: Music Performance ABSTRACT The Doctoral Performance and Research submitted by Jonathan Greenstein, under the direction of Les Thimmig at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, in the fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Musical Arts consists of the following: I. Written Project: "Astral Fire: A Meditation on Spiritual Jazz as Modeled by Five Saxophone Players, 1969-1979" Spiritual jazz has had a major impact on jazz music, and especially on young artists working in jazz today. Yet, musicians, scholars, and critics have struggled to arrive at a consensus on its definition. For some, spiritual jazz is a meaningful offshoot of modal jazz, promoted by Impulse! and smaller, independent record-labels. For others, it is a style characterized by an overloaded context and primitive, pentatonic meandering. Given these conflicting assertions, this research uses the disciplinary lens' of jazz analysis, theory, and history to identify common features that link a select group of spiritual jazz representatives. To better define the style's aesthetic in its most formative decade, this research will analyze the performance practices of five saxophone players: Gary Bartz, Pharoah Sanders, Billy Harper, Bennie Maupin, and John Gilmore.
