Education without ethics, without sentiments, without heart, is simply soulless, factual academics and nothing more. In his array of authentic essays, Ronald J. Pelias poetically evokes the spiritual aspects of life in a seemingly dispassionate field--the academy. A Methodology of the Heart presents a procession of situational compositions confronting matters such as family relationships, student/teacher communications, and general life at the university. In his comical yet candid book, Pelias depicts the emotional battle for understanding and honesty within the conventional boundaries of higher education. It introduces such subjects as autoethnography, autobiography, personal narratives, memoir, creative non-fiction, and performative writing. It is absolutely a crucial addition to all book collectors with autoethnographic or communication interests as well as to the general reader attracted to daily life and higher education.

An increasing number of studies indicate that the analysis of blood pressure and heart rate variability may be a valuable tool for the investigation of the mechanisms responsible for cardiovascular regulation in physiological and pathological conditions. The reader can find in the first part of this book an updated review of the techniques currently employed for the computer analysis of these signals with a particular attention to the most innovative approaches based on the non-linear analysis (including applications of the chaos theory, fractal analysis, I/f modelling) and the time-variant estimation of BP and HR characteristics. The biological interpretation of the results obtained by these computerized procedures and the applicability of these techniques in a clinical setting are fully addressed in the second part of the book.

This book examines the various norms for the logic and methodology of science, placing them in the context of the cognitive interests and explanatory ideals that motivate science. Various themes in the philosophy of science are examined, including the views of K. Popper, T. Kuhn, and L. Laudan. Characteristic cases of scientific theories are examined in order to illustrate and justify the proposed norms. These include, on the one hand, the emergence of the science of Galileo, Kepler, and Newton from the older metaphysical style of explanation to be found in Aristotle and, on the other hand, Darwin's theory of natural selection. Also included are characteristic cases of pseudoscience, including creation science, Lysenkoism, Velikovsky, UFOs and ancient astronauts, astrology, parapsychology, and various kinds of alternative medicine. From these examples and the more theoretical discussion, there emerges a series of norms for demarcating science and pseudoscience. Various aspects of the scientific method are examined in detail, including the role of hypotheses, the logical structure of theories, and how these relate to the experimental methods of John Stuart Mill. collection; for example, what do we say about observational reports of the existence of UFOs? In this context there is a discussion of some of the issues raised in the so-called science wars. It is concluded that the sociology of science can at times be helpful to the scientific community in improving their methods of investigation.

This tenth edition updates the material of the previous edition so that it corresponds with recent technical changes, though the foremost reason for the revision is to emphasize the importance of ergonomics and work design as parts of methods engineering. The textbook integrates both the traditional elements of motion and time study and the human factors of ergonomics into one book. In this day and age, the industrial engineer needs to consider both the issues of productivity and their effects on the health and safety of the worker simultaneously, something this volume aims to help with through its offering of questions, problems, and sample laboratory exercises and its online provision of forms and information.
