The final volume in the Handbook for Liturgical Studiesseries, Volume V: Liturgical Time and Spacecontains the concluding material for an integral study of the liturgy. It opens with a preliminary notion of time and space, before discussing in detail three types of liturgical celebrations on which time and space have a direct and particular bearing. The first of these is the Liturgy of the Hours. This topic is developed in the light of the early Christian tradition until the fourth century and its subsequent forms in both East and West. The second is the Liturgical Year, traditionally called the anni circulas. The development of the Liturgical Year during the first four centuries is reviewed. This is followed by adetaled study of the Byzantine, Roman, and non-Roman Western tradition. It concludes with the theology and spirituality of the Liturgical Year wherein the mystery of Christ as a saving event is made present in time, so that the faithful may lay hold of it through the Word and the sacraments. The theology of liturgical space is drawn from the mutual interaction between the assembled community, which gives meaning to the place of assembly, and the place itself, which upholds and signifies community. A noted biographer and poet illuminates the unique woman who wrote the greatest American love poetry of the twentieth century What Lips My Lips Have Kissed is the story of a rare sort of American genius, who grew up in grinding poverty in Camden, Maine. Nothing could save the sensitive child but her talent for words, music and drama, and an inexorable desire to be loved. When she was twenty, her poetry would make her famous; at thirty she would be loved by readers the world over. Edna St. Vincent Millay was widely considered to be the most seductive woman of her age. Few men could resist her, and many women also fell under her spell. From the publication of her first poems until the scandal over Fatal Interview twenty years later, gossip about the poet's liberated lifestyle prompted speculation about who might be the real subject of her verses. Using letters, diaries and journals of the poet and her lovers that have only recently become available, Daniel Mark Epstein tells the astonishing story of the life, dedicated to art and love, that inspired the sublime lyrics of Edna St. Vincent Millay.

Scotland, Norway, Newfoundland, 1951–80 In this book the author presents extracts from his hill diary in Scotland, Norway and Newfoundland, including hill-walking, rock and snow climbing, ski-mountaineering, and observing wildlife, from 1951 when he was 20. They continued through a personal exploration of hill country, often solo, until 1980. The book describes many ski-tours in Scotland, mostly alone, during 1951, the snowiest winter of the 1900s, and climbing with Tom Weir and Douglas Scott for weeks in north Norway during summer 1951, returning by trawler to Grimsby. In 1952 his enjoyment of lone ski-mountaineering and snow allowed him to study the winter ecology of ptarmigan in the Cairngorms, and in summer 1952 he led a three-man student expedition to north Norway. During April 1953 he spent a week alone on the Avalon Barrens of Newfoundland, studying willow grouse. Then he presents extracts from diary days in Scotland and Norway up to 1963, and in Scotland climbing and ski-mountaineering in 1963–80. Throughout, he writes of his joy at the beauty of nature.

In early September 1862 thousands of Union soldiers huddled within the defenses of Washington, disorganized and discouraged from their recent defeat at Second Manassas. Confederate General Robert E. Lee then led his tough and confident Army of Northern Virginia into Maryland in a bold gamble to force a showdown that could win Southern independence. The future of the Union hung in the balance. The campaign that followed lasted only two weeks, but it changed the course of the Civil War. D. Scott Hartwig delivers a riveting first installment of a two-volume study of the campaign and climactic battle. It takes the reader from the controversial return of George B. McClellan as commander of the Army of the Potomac through the Confederate invasion, the siege and capture of Harpers Ferry, the daylong Battle of South Mountain, and, ultimately, to the eve of the great and terrible Battle of Antietam.
