The American artist Alexander Calder (1898-1976) and Swiss artists Peter Fischli (born 1952) and David Weiss (1946-2012) have all sought and found quintessential ways of rendering a moment of fragile balance in art--a temporary state at once precarious and propitious. With Calder's groundbreaking invention of the mobile in the early 1930s, and Fischli/Weiss's collaborative creative work from 1979 onwards, these artists each lent the theme of fragile balance an iconic form of a very different kind. At first glance, both positions could hardly be more different; later, however, they proved to be two sides of the same coin, the result of different perspectives on the same theme at different times. This elaborately designed, richly illustrated catalogue with accompanying essays provides insight into both oeuvres.

Roberta Smith called him the "madcap bad boy of contemporary German art" and also "one of the three or four best German artists of the postwar period." Martin Kippenberger disrupted the status quo throughout his brief, excessive life, not just by making art of every variety and medium but also by conducting an extended performance in the vicinity of art that involved running galleries, organizing exhibitions, collecting the work of his contemporaries and overseeing assistants. He published books and catalogues, played in a rock-and-roll band and cut records, ran a performance-art space during his early years in Berlin, became part owner of a restaurant in Los Angeles during six months he spent there preparing for an exhibition, and collaborated extensively with other artists. This particular volume considers his output of artist's books, as well as his exhibition catalogues and all the publications whose content he either created or edited. More than just documentation, this publication makes accessible for a wider public the multiple aspects of Kippenberger's books, with all the complexity and consequence of his oeuvre intact.

With "Ground-Up City," author Liane Lefaivre has developed a theoretical model for tackling playgrounds as an urban strategy. She starts with a historical overview of play and the ludic in art, architecture and urban design, focusing particularly on postwar playgrounds realized in Amsterdam as joint ventures between Aldo van Eyck, Cornelis van Eesteren and Jakoba Mulder. The architecture firm Döll-Atelier voor Bouwkunst explored the possibility of applying the model in two urban redevelopment areas in Rotterdam, Oude Westen in the inner city and Meeuwenplaat in Hoogvliet, an outlying postwar district, refining it into a practical design strategy. The second part of the book provides a refreshing new look at play in a picture essay, with reference images illustrating play as an urban phenomenon. "Ground-Up City" places the playground high on the agenda as an urban design challenge. It also shows how specifying a generic, academic model for a particular situation can lead to a practically applicable design resource.

What new paths have sculptors opened up since the end of World War II? Based on late works by Constantin Brancusi and Alberto Giacometti, this unique comprehensive volume illustrates the exciting and multifaceted developments in this dynamic art form. It demonstrates how the classic notion of form and sculpture was set in motion, became more abstract, was brought closer to the ordinary everyday object, dissolved spatial or conceptual boundaries, or even reconstituted itself by returning to figurative traditions. The long and top-class list of the artists being presented ranges from Pablo Picasso, Henry Moore, and Jean Tinguely to Franz West, Damien Hirst, and Monika Sosnowska. On the basis of selected works from the Kunstmuseum Basel and outstanding loans from international museums and private collections, the tour opens up a dense, extremely rich world of contrasts. (English edition ISBN 978-3-7757-4071-5) Featured artists (selection):Absalon, Carl Andre, Jean Arp, Max Bill, Louise Bourgeois, Constantin Brancusi, Alexander Calder, John Chamberlain, Eduardo Chillida, Peter Fischli und David Weiss, Katharina Fritsch, Alberto Giacometti, Robert Gober, Duane Hanson, Eva Hesse, Damien Hirst, Donald Judd, Mike Kelley, Jeff Koons, Mario Merz, Henry Moore, Bruce Nauman, Claes Oldenburg, Gabriel Orozco, Pablo Picasso, Charles Ray, Richard Serra, Monika Sosnowska, David Smith, Jean Tinguely, Oscar Tuazon, Danh Vo, Franz West Ausstellung/Exhibition: Kunstmuseum Basel 19.4.-18.9.2016

At last, the broader movements of twentieth-century Swiss art--and the individual artists behind them--are tracked through the present day in one standard-setting publication. Swiss Made: Precision and Madness sets the famous Swiss tendency toward precision and order alongside the tendency toward obstinacy and chaos, pairing canonical works with pieces made within the past 40 years. Provocative pairs include Max Bill and John Armleder, Ferdinand Hodler and Urs Lüthi, Alberto Giacometti and Rémy Zaugg, Louis Soutter and Martin Disler, Robert Müller and Sylvie Fleury, Paul Klee and Silvia Bächli, Adolph Wölfli and Ugo Rondinone. Tensions emerge between the focused and the expansive, over everyday life in the Swiss state, and naturally over the mountains. Swiss Made: Precision and Madness is of interest on its own analytic terms, and as an excellent overview of the country's art since 1850.
