Alexandria is situated near the center of Douglas County, surrounded by a chain of beautiful lakes. These lakes brought pioneer settlers to the area as early as 1858, when Minnesota achieved statehood and the town was established. The lakes remain a key factor that continue to draw residents and visitors. The images in Postcard History Series: Alexandria tell the community's story, recalling fond memories of the businesses, churches, homes, schools, and recreational opportunities that form the generous and caring nature of the welcoming community that is Alexandria.

Portsmouth, Ohio, originated in the 1790s, when the town of Alexandria was founded at the junction of the Scioto and Ohio Rivers. A decade later, due to the frequent disastrous floods from both rivers, Alexandria was abandoned and the entire town moved eastward. In 1814, after being platted by Henry Massie, the city of Portsmouth was incorporated. In the years that followed, Portsmouth became an industrial and transportation center, a regional leader in retail and wholesale businesses, and a recreational center that once featured, among many other things, an amusement park and a National Football League team franchise. The nickname "Peerless City" was a perfect fit.

Newport's recent revitalization gives its citizens all the more reason to remember the city's storied past. Before Newport boomed with tourism, it was dubbed "the Sin City of the South," infamous for its abundant casinos and nightclubs. Prior to that, though, Newport thrived as a street car suburb and an industrial hub, relying on the Ohio River for transportation. Along with its neighbor, the Queen City of Cincinnati, Newport blossomed into the vibrant community that it is today. The vintage postcards in this volume depict the fascinating legacy left by Newport's people and places.

"The images in this book are representative of the nearly 200 miles of this historic highway and the communities along and near its path. Most of these pictorial memories are at least 50 years old, back when motorists were well acquainted with hand-pumping filling stations, mom-and-pop diners, and numerous tourists homes and cabins"--Cover p. The Thousand Islands are more than 1,800 islands located in 35 miles of the upper St. Lawrence River between Upstate New York and southeastern Ontario. During the latter half of the 19th century, the region evolved as a vacation destination, initially for Canadian and American urbanites drawn by the restorative powers of spectacular scenery and relaxed summer life. Tourism expanded rapidly, and by the early 1900s, the Thousand Islands boasted dozens of grand hotels, daily railroad connections to New York and Philadelphia, steamship service to Montreal and Toronto, innumerable sightseeing and guided fishing excursions, and the best that North Americas premier vacation spot could offer.
