The late Lewis Grizzard got his first newspaper job when he was 10 years old. Thirty-odd years later (30 very odd years), he was still in the newspaper business and still infuriated by it, still tickled by it, and still very much in love with it. If I Ever Get Back to Georgia, I'm Gonna Nail My Feet to the Ground is all about that anger, that great humor, and that even greater passion for something that affects every single one of us: the daily newspaper. Grizzard begins with his first writing job (covering a boys' church-league team in Newnan, Georgia) and continues through his college years in Athens, Georgia, where he learned how to do such things as prepare a front-page headline and layout in case Jesus Christ ever returned to earth (headline: "HE'S BACK!"). He then examines his tenure at the Chicago Sun-Times, during which he lost his second wife, his cool, and very nearly his sanity but also learned an awful lot about life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. My name is Talfred Hawkins and the book that I am writing is a true account of my life. That Life can take many turns, many ups and downs, heartaches and heart breaks; that brings disappointments, and let downs. But I have learned that with God, all things are truly possible. You can defeat Satan and his demons, and the children and servants of Satan that He sends to attack you, try to defeat you, and even try to kill you. I pray that this book help become a blessing for others. Our enemy or enemies can be defeated, when we know who they are an how to identify them. Our enemy is Satan and his demonic forces. And they are real. We may not see them, but every day we can see or feel the manifestation of the re works in everyday life. But with Jesus Christ coming into your life and teaching you, guiding you how to fight, and at the same time giving you comfort and peace in the battle and in the storm. I hope that this book will help you the way these experiences through the Power of the LORD saved me and helped me. God Bless you. All the names have been changed to protect the people in this book

A world-renowned pediatric neurosurgeon shares the lessons of courage, compassion, and resilience that he's learned from his exceptional young patients If I Get to Five is a one-of-a-kind book by a one-of-a-kind human being. The medical world knows him as Fred Epstein, M.D., the neurosurgeon who pioneered life-saving procedures for previously inoperable tumors in children. His patients and their families know him simply as Dr. Fred, the "miracle man" who has extended them both a healing hand and an open heart. "I simply can't accept the idea of kids dying," is how Epstein explains his commitment to saving patients. As a child, he had to overcome severe learning disabilities to realize his dream of becoming a doctor. Later, as the world's leading pediatric neurosurgeon, he did whatever it took to rescue children that other doctors had given up on. Epstein credits his young patients as his most important teachers. "We tend to think of children as fragile, little people," he writes. "To me, they're giants." If I Get to Five relates the unforgettable experiences he's shared with children-lessons in courage, compassion, love, and hope-that we can all draw on to overcome adversity at any stage of life. In If I Get to Five, Epstein meditates on these lessons at a time when they parallel his own experiences, as he recovers from a near-fatal head injury. If I Get to Five is a riveting profile of courage and compassion. No one who reads this remarkable book will ever look at children-or adversity-in the same way.

The execution of the perfect crime can leave you flabbergasted, thrilled, chilled, amazed, or just downright impressed. But let’s face it: most lawbreakers end up shooting themselves in the foot, and that’s way more fun to read about. Here we pay tribute to the comic blunderers whose antics land them in police cuffs faster than you can say "He went thatta way!" And if it won’t solve the mystery of why these miscreants do what they do, at least it will aid and abet you in the laughter department. There’s a diverse and crazy crowd of fumblers and bumblers in our wacky lineup. Some fools call the cops on themselves, or dial 9-1-1 to ask where they can buy drugs. There’s even a real-life Cinderella story about a girl forced to stay outdoors and do all the work while her stepsisters lived in comfort.

"A work of stunning density and penetrating analysis . . . Lost Battalions deploys a narrative symmetry of gratifying complexity."—David Levering Lewis, The Nation During the bloodiest days of World War I, no soldiers served more valiantly than the African American troops of the 369th Infantry—the fabled Harlem Hellfighters—and the legendary 77th "lost battalion" composed of New York City immigrants. Though these men had lived up to their side of the bargain as loyal American soldiers, the country to which they returned solidified laws and patterns of social behavior that had stigmatized them as second-class citizens. Richard Slotkin takes the pulse of a nation struggling with social inequality during a decisive historical moment, juxtaposing social commentary with battle scenes that display the bravery and solidarity of these men. Enduring grueling maneuvers, and the loss of so many of their brethren, the soldiers in the lost battalions were forever bound by their wartime experience. Both a riveting combat narrative and a brilliant social history, Lost Battalions delivers a richly detailed account of the fierce fight for equality in the shadow of a foreign war.

In Losing Everything, his first book of nonfiction, acclaimed novelist David Lozell Martin tells his wildest, most outlandish story yet -- his own. One evening in the mountainous forest of his isolated West Virginia farmhouse, Martin became disoriented when searching for a horse who had wandered off the property. Wading through the dark and guiding his horse with a belt around its neck, Martin felt as though every step was taking him deeper into the mountains. Instead, he unknowingly spent the night walking in a wide circle that brought him back to where he started. This quickly became a metaphor for Martin's life. "The more lost I get, the closer to home I come." After growing up with a violent father who nearly killed Martin's clinically insane mother, Martin pursued a writer's life with a vengeance, becoming vulnerable to struggles with alcohol, financial ruin, and legal feuds. Then, after a betrayal by his soul mate, Martin's sanity was in as much jeopardy as his mother's had ever been -- a state of mind that in his case led to gunfire, divorce, and at least one trip to the emergency room. But Losing Everything is less about getting lost and more about finding your way home again. In his pursuit of stability, Martin uncovered lessons that might help others who have encountered loss: take pleasure in something as small as an ampersand, keep a list of people you know who have died, meet your own death like a warrior, and be glad you don't own a monkey. Deeply personal yet surprisingly universal, Martin's story is for anyone who has wandered astray. If not a road map, his journey is a guide, providing hard-earned wisdom to illuminate the path home.
