Throughout the history of the United States, fluctuations in cultural diversity, immigration, and ethnic group status have been closely linked to shifts in the economy and labor market. Over three decades after the beginning of the civil rights movement, and in the midst of significant socioeconomic change at the end of this century, scholars search for new ways to describe the persistent roadblocks to upward mobility that women and people of color still encounter in the workforce. In Glass Ceilings and Asian Americans, Deborah Woo analyzes current scholarship and controversies on the glass ceiling and labor market discrimination in conjunction with the specific labor histories of Asian American ethnic groups. She then presents unique, in-depth studies of two current sites--a high tech firm and higher education--to argue that a glass ceiling does in fact exist for Asian Americans, both according to quantifiable data and to Asian American workers' own perceptions of their workplace experiences. Woo's studies make an important contribution to understanding the increasingly complex and subtle interactions between ethnicity and organizational cultures in today's economic institutions and labor markets.

In this book we explore a sea change occurring in leadership for academic women in the sciences and engineering. Our approach is a two-pronged one: On the one hand, we outline the nature of the changes and their sources, both in various literatures and from program research results. On the other hand, we specify and provide detail about the persistent problems and obstacles that remain as barriers to women’s full participation in academic science and engineering, their career advancement and success, and, most important, their role as leaders in making change. At the heart of this book is our goal to give some shape to the research, practice, and programs developed by women academic leaders making institutional change in the sciences and engineering. Table of Contents: Women in a New Era of Academic Leadership / Background: Academic Leadership for Women in Science and Engineering / Gender and Leadership: Theories and Applications / Women in Engineering Leadership Institute: Critical Issues for Women Academic Engineers as Leaders / From Success Stories to Success Strategies: Leadership for Promoting Diversity in Academic Science and Engineering / Conclusion

There are thousands of highly practical and often entertaining astrology books freely available to consumers who have become familiar with the basic parameters of astrology. The authors of these books, and most other astrologers, analyze only the "ten planets"--the sun and the nine planets of our solar system. Author William Noah asserts that this simple method is insufficient because the energy of mankind is not solely captured in the planets. Noah's all-inclusive work serves as a tutorial and reference for the world of asteroids and planets. Of the thousands of asteroids in the universe, Noah has selected twenty key asteroids that are the most relevant to the events, experiences, encounters, and future possibilities of the astrology-interested public. Noah's comprehensive work includes: Charts with meaning and symbolism of zodiac signs and houses Lists of planetary symbolism and meaning Alignment of chart interpretation with the complementary astro-mythic energy characterization of triangular Grand Trine formations depicting the meaning and permanent effect for life momentum Natal charts for every president of the United States Natal charts for popular American celebrities The "Astrology of America" goes beyond analysis of the planets to prepare horoscopes by introducing preselected asteroids into the astrological mix. Noah believes his use of these asteroids, along with planetary placement, builds a framework that identifies the surest way to reach success and meaning in life.

There has been an increased interest in social and environmental issues in recent years as more consideration is given to the idea of sustainability and social accounting. Social accounting can be considered a straightforward manifestation of corporate enforcement to legitimize, explain, and justify the organization’s activities or an ethically desirable component of any well-functioning democracy. Social accounting can also include environmental accounting, which is focused on environmental issues. Additional study is required to better understand the relevancy of social and environmental accounting in today’s modern business world. Modern Regulations and Practices for Social and Environmental Accounting discusses social and environmental accounting and considers regulations, norms, organizational practices, and the challenges of education. Covering a range of topics such as non-financial reporting and corporate social responsibility, this reference work is ideal for industry professionals, researchers, academicians, managers, practitioners, instructors, and students.

The linguistic study of workplace language is a new and exciting area of research. This book explores the expression of power in a New Zealand workplace through examination of 52 everyday interactions between four women and their colleagues. The main focus of this research is the expression of three types of "control acts", i.e., directives, requests and advice. The women include two managers who demonstrate an interactive participative style of management. They tend to minimise rather than exert power, although their status is still evident in their speech. The study is original in its combination of a quantitative and a qualitative approach, as well as in its combination of a detailed categorisation of head acts and an analysis of context and role relationships. Through the design of the study and the methodology used, the results which are brought forward challenge earlier research both on power and control acts. The data analyzed is drawn from the Wellington Language in the Workplace Project.
