From the award-winning, bestselling author of We Should All Be Feminists and Half of a Yellow Sun—the story of two Nigerians making their way in the U.S. and the UK, raising universal questions of race, belonging, the overseas experience for the African diaspora, and the search for identity and a home. Ifemelu and Obinze are young and in love when they depart military-ruled Nigeria for the West. Beautiful, self-assured Ifemelu heads for America, where despite her academic success, she is forced to grapple with what it means to be black for the first time. Quiet, thoughtful Obinze had hoped to join her, but with post-9/11 America closed to him, he instead plunges into a dangerous, undocumented life in London. Fifteen years later, they reunite in a newly democratic Nigeria, and reignite their passion—for each other and for their homeland.

Despite the fact that Americanah is Adichie's most talked-about work, the few articles that have been published on this novel have not addressed many of Americannah's most significant issues. To date, none of the short articles, reviews, and scholarly articles considered how this novel is related to the Negritude movement. Exploring Americanah through postcolonial and Negritude lens, this paper examines the implications of the novel's turning point, the protagonist's decision to return home challenges the West's "Master Narrative" and it's imposed culture that erodes African identities and roots. Drawing on the writings of multiple postcolonial writers, I argue that following a Negritudinal paradigm, Adichie's Americanah rejects the projected black inferiority that has been advanced in Western discourses. The novel therefore urges Africans to re-evaluate African culture through a renewed appreciation and respect for African languages and cultures, and the cultivation of an Afro-centric sensibility.

Seminar paper from the year 2020 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1.0, University of Constance (FB Literatur, Kunst- und Medienwissenschaften), course: Writing Africa, language: English, abstract: The present research paper aims to prove in a first step that the American Dream acts as a leitmotif throughout the entire novel, thus showing that it is ideally suited as an object of investigation, in order to explore and discuss in a further step whether Ifemelu's American Dream can ultimately be regarded as fulfilled or disappointed, including the emphasis on important literary topoi such as race, the question of women’s rights and social matters. Due to the paper’s given length and the particular subject chosen, the following analysis will mainly focus on Ifemelu and her experiences, as she actually leaves Nigeria for the U.S. and then comes back to her home country, thus representing the perfect research subject under the thesis of the American Dream, it’s reliving and consequences through her personae. As for Obinze, who experiences similar difficulties in the U.K., a comparison does present itself, but can only be the subject of another research paper.

The idea of “diaspora” is an everyday concept for many people around the world who have left their homeland voluntarily or by force with the hope of making a new home in another place. In recent years, academics have used this term to reference conflating categories such as immigrants, ethnic and racial minorities, and refugees. This book examines the concepts of diaspora in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Americanah (2013). Americanah tells the story of a smart young girl named Ifemelu who leaves Nigeria for America in search of higher education. In America, she faces several problems before graduating from college. This book investigates Americanah through diasporic concepts such as self and Otherness, acculturation, cultural diversity, hybridity, ambivalence and mimicry, unbelonging and return.

Literary Nonfiction. African & African American Studies. When Did You First Realize You Were Black? Provoked by the fraught relationship between the African continent and American culture in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's Americanah, acclaimed Nigerian-American novelist Tochi Onyebuchi takes an emotional and intellectual journey through his own education in Blackness--his first loves, his introduction to politics, and his eventual commitment to the struggle. Ranging from Paris to a Connecticut boarding school to a harrowing walk through the streets of Palestine, and touching on lessons from Frantz Fanon, Sylvia Wynter, Mohsin Hamid, August Wilson, Dear White People, and Black Panther, Onyebuchi blends memoir and cultural criticism to explore the ways in which identities, like diamonds, are pressurized into existence by suffering, and how "the other side of suffering is self-determination." (S)KINFOLK culminates in a trip to Nigeria, the homeland, where the author realizes that "we share a future," as Black Americans and Africans, on this "asymptotic journey" toward self-actualization.

Adichie's Americanah is a novel that elevates anonymous blogging into black cultural performance. The novel follows a young Nigerian, Ifemelu, who arrives in the United States on a student visa and depicts her stressful confrontation with racism in post-slavery America. Through beginning a blog, Ifemelu voices her experiences as a black woman and immigrant in ways that renew the concerns of James Baldwin, an author whom she studies closely. Like Baldwin, her style blends humor and techniques of persuasion that trace to traditional oral folklore. Ifemelu's success rests partly on Adichie's construction of her as a character of good ethos, an individual whom both readers of her blog, and readers of the novel, are encouraged to trust. Her use of a pseudonym, the non-American black, offers her sanctuary to decipher an identity for herself as a migrant, and creates space for kinship with others who value her writing as psychological and spiritual support. This updates the socially engaged practice that Toni Morrison has recommended as part of a framework for her own writing, a practice that engages with the conflict between the public and private lives of artists. Although philosopher Martha Nussbaum and others have argued that online anonymity should be eradicated, Ifemelu's story illustrates a contradictory case in which the cultural traditions of the formerly colonized benefit from the privacy of anonymity. Further, Americanah exemplifies how the web, which was built to be nonhierarchical, is a place where black art flourishes, and that the web is a natural tool for politically engaged creativity.

ABSTRACT: This essay analyzes how race—and, specifically, the idea of "blackness"—circulates in two contemporary novels. In reading Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's Americanah and Andrea Levy's Small Island comparatively, this essay argues that the term "black" is not a stable signifier of race, but materially and geographically contingent. The transnational mobility of the two female protagonists in these novels uncovers the variableness in perceptions of racial differences. This slippage reveals the connections between racialized and national identity and demonstrates the necessity of linking the two, while simultaneously relying on race as way to demarcate the limits of national belonging.
