Naturalist Ernest Thompson Seton created a new literary form when he began writing stories about his adventures with wild animals in the 1890s. His first stories were compiled in the book, "Wild Animals I Have Known," that became popular throughout the United States and Canada. The stories are spellbinding chronicles of wild animal courage, intelligence, and endurance as they valiantly attempt to escape the traps, poisons, guns, and lariats of their human pursuers. Seton was renowned for his scientific studies of American wildlife. His stories about wild animals, however, were a mix of fact and fiction that heightened the drama of each animal's life or death struggle. During the 1890s Seton traveled to the American West and from his experiences wrote the thrilling tales contained in this collection. The exploits of Lobo (wolf), The Pacing Mustang, Tito (coyote), Monarch (grizzly), Coaly-Bay (horse), Johnny Bear, and Badlands Billy (wolf) are presented in their entirety along with many of Seton's drawings. Stephen Zimmer was Director of the Seton Memorial Library at Philmont Scout Ranch at Cimarron, New Mexico for twenty years. For this collection he contributed a biographical introduction of Ernest Thompson Seton and the historical background for each story.

During the First World War, there were nearly seventy million combatants who served in the armies of numerous countries and empires, but there was another army involved, one that is often overlooked in the history of war: The army of animals that supported the armies of men. From regimental mascots to beasts of burden, animals played a vital part in the war machine of all involved, and often beyond anything we might imagine. There was man's best friend -- brave, loyal dogs who served as patrolmen, messengers, sentries, even combatants and detectives. Communication has increased importance in modern warfare, yet at times a homing pigeon's instinct of orientation was the sole hope available to soldiers in the field. And despite the lowering esteem in which conventional cavalry was held, horses were still able to go where the most modern of vehicles could not. Focusing on the Allied Powers, Baynes tells of "the work done by animals in helping to win the war," recording the services and sacrifices borne by these noble animals and more, including the advent of chemical warfare and what it meant.

In Darwin in 1942, Gunner’s barking alerted an entire army base of impending air raids, well before the enemy planes appeared on radar. Following an ambush, Sarbi the explosive detection dog was held captive by the Taliban for over a year, before heading home a hero. And when 135000 horses left Australia for the First World War, why was General Bridges’ charger Sandy the only one to return home? Drawing from first-hand sources and interviews with those who were there, Anthony Hill brings to life the loyalty and courage of these animals, and the love their soldiers felt for them. From the donkeys that carried the wounded at Gallipoli to the dolphins that hunted underwater mines in Iraq, these animal heroes are at the heart of some of the most remarkable stories in Australia’s military history. This fully revised and updated edition features inspiring true stories of heroism and sacrifice, many of them never told before.
