Dance has become increasingly visible within contemporary culture: just think of reality TV shows featuring this art form. This shift brings the ballet body into renewed focus. Historically both celebrated and critiqued for its thin, flexible, and highly feminized aesthetic, the ballet body now takes on new and complex meanings at the intersections of performance art, popular culture, and fitness. The Evolving Feminine Ballet Body provides a local perspective to enrich the broader cultural narratives of ballet through historical, socio-cultural, political, and artistic lenses, redefining what many consider to be "high art." Scholars in gender studies, folklore, popular culture, and cultural studies will be interested in this collection, as well as those involved in the dance world.Contributors: Kelsie Acton, Marianne I. Clark, Kate Z. Davies, Lindsay Eales, Pirkko Markula, Carolyn Millar, Jodie Vandekerkhove

From Mouse to Mermaid, an interdisciplinary collection of original essays, is the first comprehensive, critical treatment of Disney cinema. Addressing children's classics as well as the Disney affiliates' more recent attempts to capture adult audiences, the contributors respond to the Disney film legacy from feminist, marxist, poststructuralist, and cultural studies perspectives. The volume contemplates Disney's duality as an American icon and as an industry of cultural production, created in and through fifty years of filmmaking. The contributors treat a range of topics at issue in contemporary cultural studies: the performance of gender, race, and class; the engendered images of science, nature, technology, family, and business. The compilation of voices in From Mouse to Mermaid creates a persuasive cultural critique of Disney's ideology. The contributors are Bryan Attebery, Elizabeth Bell, Claudia Card, Chris Cuomo, Ramona Fernandez, Henry A. Giroux, Robert Haas, Lynda Haas, Susan Jeffords, N. Soyini Madison, Susan Miller, Patrick Murphy, David Payne, Greg Rode, Laura Sells, and Jack Zipes.

Interaction is a prominent part of our everyday life and experience; daily reality is constructed within the interactions that individuals establish with those around them, with whom they share experiences in a concrete context. Objects, phenomena and individuals permanently influence each other through this dynamic process. The authors of this volume engage in an on-going interpretative process of defining this influence, giving considerable attention to the way participants to interaction try to understand each other, to interpret each other’s activity and prove this in an explicit or implicit way through a variety of semiotic codes (verbal, nonverbal or paraverbal). The authors, implicitly, address the question: how do social actors (in their quality of translators, writers, painters or teachers) see the world around and the interactions between its constituent parts/activities/processes? The primary goal of Perspectives on Interaction is to bring together concerns, approaches, interpretations and analyses on the proposed topic. The authors, members of a young research group (“Cultural Spaces”), have examined various aspects through which interaction manifests itself in social practices, linguistics, translation studies, didactics and literary discourse. This has made possible the gathering of the material under four headings which constitute the chapters of the book: Translation as Interaction; Aspects of Social Interaction; Texts and Representations in Interaction; Interactive Practices in Literary Discourse. Ideas have been organized around some important key points: communication, action, interaction, competence, performance, linguistic and nonlinguistic signs. The volume will appeal to researchers and students working within the fields of translation, education, arts, discourse and literature, and offers inspiring topics and relevant research.
