James Sheldon directed many of the radio and television shows that shaped the American consciousness. He directed the original radio version of We, The People when it became the first commercial CBS network program to telecast nationally on June 1, 1948. Since then, he experienced technological changes from live to electronic tape to film, from black and white to color, and from a few hundred thousand to multi-millions of television sets that in use today. His early live credits include dramatic series, such as Robert Montgomery Presents and Studio One; comedies, such as Mister Peepers; musicals, such as Don Ameche's Holiday Hotel. He was also part of the move from New York to Los Angeles as television production shifted west in the mid-1950s, directing The Johnny Carson Show, West Point Story, Harbor Command, and Dick Powell's Zane Grey Theater. In the 1960s, he directed episodes of 87th Precinct, Naked City, Route 66, The Millionaire, My Three Sons, The Twilight Zone, Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color, and Gunsmoke. In the 1970s, he directed episodes of M*A*S*H, The Virginian, Sanford & Son, Rock Hudson's McMillan & Wife, and Raymond Burr's Ironside. In the 1980s, he directed episodes of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Cagney & Lacey, and The Equalizer. He helped many actors begin their careers, including James Dean, Paul Newman, Dustin Hoffman, Gene Hackman, Carroll O'Connor, Clint Eastwood, Burt Reynolds, Lee Remick, Tony Randall, and Tyne Daly. This is his story.

In these fifty entertaining, illuminating short essays, Reilly invites you to join him on the film set. What is it like to shoot a love scene? How do you do a full body burn? What is it like to film in the Everglades or in a morgue? What is blocking or matching, and how long should a script be? How do you decide when to build a set? Why is the color palette so critical? Is night shooting worth the suffering? The Big Picture delivers the surprising answers to these and other fascinating questions about what it takes to make a feature film, offering a glimpse into what it's like when the lights are bright, the camera is rolling, and the moviemakers are calling the shots.

Television directors Arthur Penn, Delbert Mann, Jeffrey Hayden, George Roy Hill, Paul Bogart, Paul Nickell and Ted Post began their careers in New York during the heyday of the live drama shows. It was there that they learned their craft and honed their skills. With the end of the live era in the late 1950s, these directors found themselves working on film. They brought many of the techniques of the live age to their new medium, altering the traditional production methods of Hollywood. Here these seven directors discuss their approaches to working with cast and production personnel, the social and aesthetic issues they first raised in the live television dramas and continued in their film work, and their interaction with critics and viewers.
