Detective Inspector Daniel Clement is back in Broome, the tropical town where he grew up, licking his wounds from a busted marriage and struggling to be impressed by his new team of small-town, inexperienced cops. But stagnation and lethargy soon give way to a case with urgent purpose. On the edge of the desert, a man is found dead in a crocodile-infested watering hole. And he is only the first. The connection between the victims is elusive, but Clement must pursue it as a decades-old mystery begins to unravel and a monster cyclone brews on the horizon.

What do radicals, religion, race, riots, restaurants and Rufus Thomas all have in common? According to this provocative first novel by veteran music journalist Ira Robbins, they are all defining elements of the 1960s. At times dishearteningly bleak, Kick It Till It Breaks is rich with offbeat characters vividly drawn against a tableau of antiwar violence. Unlike most stories of the time, the author - who nonetheless claims a high regard for its political and cultural achievements - is unsparing in his depiction of dedicated idealists failing to uphold their ideals. The author uses slang, dialect and timely pop culture touchstones to bring the Viet Nam era to life in such disparate locales as Memphis, London, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., San Francisco, Chicago and New York. Fans of Putney Swope, The Young Ones and A Confederacy of Dunces will likely recognize a harmony of tone and perspective with those darkly humorous works.

The discovery of Gerard Manley Hopkins's poetry in the twentieth century was a revelation for post-war poets, who discovered a voice seemingly bottled for their own time. This influence has not faded in the twenty-first century; in fact, it has grown all the more pervasive as poets from many backgrounds and nations have found, in the voice of this nineteenth-century Jesuit, a revolutionary way of addressing contemporary concerns relating to human imagination, ecology, "green" ethics, the role of art, and individual spirituality. In a climate where high modernism, Whitmanic free verse, and the confessional lyric are often held up as contemporary poetry's dominant forerunners, this book proposes a more complex genealogy, tracing back to Hopkins and his influential early admirers current strands of emotional and spiritual openness, pleasure in word play and sonic textures, and veneration of the dynamic material world.

Our sins have made a barrier between God and us (Isaiah 59:2). Sins leave us without the knowledge of what true peace is and what it means to act justly before God. Because of this, we stay in darkness, even though Jesus is the Light. In the darkness we grope like blind men and stumble in broad daylight. We moan and groan for the blessings of God, but our sins testify against us. Sin is disobedience to God. Even though Jesus died for these sins, if we remain in them, then we reject the Light. Our rejection of the Light is what causes the barriers between us and God. This book, Intercession That Breaks the Sound Barrier, gives several instances of what Jesus says invites the darkness and the redemptive voice that breaks them. Sounding the sounds of intercession is like putting on the robe of vengeance as armor. It is putting on the work of Jesus Himself to glorify God our Father. It is reverence for God in the name of God--it is Jehovah's breath. "And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, 'Receive ye the Holy Ghost: Whosesoever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whosesoever sins ye retain, they are retained" (John 20:22-23). It would be a mistake to speak of any earthly author for this book. It was written only as the breath of Jehovah breathed, and not of man's ability. To Him be all the glory and praise. Amen
