Reaching Reluctant Young Readers features 150 middle-grade books. Each profiled title has the potential to hook the reluctant reader and lure them to read the entire book. To specifically encourage elementary and middle-school-age reluctant children to read, there is first a pitch to get the reader’s attention. That is followed by a short reading passage to “set the hook” and encourage the young person to read the rest of the book on their own. Further, the book contains several hundred additional recommended titles. The books selected for this collection were chosen following the criteria of reluctant reader books created by the Quick Picks committee sponsored by the Young Adult Library Services Association. While these guidelines were designed for young adult books, they also work well for middle-grade books. The criteria include: clear writing (no convoluted long sentences with sophisticated vocabulary), high interest “hook” in the first few pages, well-defined characters, interesting plot, and familiar themes.

But how is Nate supposed to make his dreams come true when he’s stuck in Jankburg, Pennsylvania, where no one (except his best pal Libby) appreciates a good show tune? With Libby’s help, Nate plans a daring overnight escape to New York. There’s an open casting call for E.T.: The Musical, and Nate knows this could be the difference between small-town blues and big-time stardom. Young Matt Bodine and Sam Two Wolves became blood brothers on the day the rancher's son saved the halfbreed's life, forging a bond no one could ever break. As years passed, a legend grew of the breed and the white man who rode together--and who could jerk killing iron with the best of them. . . Devil Creek Crossfire When the brothers head into the small cowtown of Crossville, close by Devil Creek, all they want is to stock up on supplies and rest their weary horses. Instead, they find themselves in the middle of a bloody range war that's literally split the town down the middle. The warring factions have set up camp on either side of Main Street, and the newcomers ride in on a deserted strip of no man's land where anything--and nothing good--is liable to happen. The feud seems ridiculous: it isn't over land or water or cattle rustling, but something much darker. . .and deadlier. Bodine and Two Wolves figure the best course would be to leave--that is, until both sides order them out. Big mistake. Because the blood brothers don't take orders from anyone. . .

In 1972, the Philadelphia Phillies experienced one of their worst seasons in franchise history, finishing with an abysmal 59–97 record. Yet throughout this disastrous season, Steve “Lefty” Carlton proved to be a diamond in the rough. In his first year with the club, he led the league with 27 wins, eight shutouts, and a sizzling 1.98 ERA, earning an astounding 45.8 percent of Philadelphia’s wins. He also won his first Cy Young award, the first pitcher to do so with a last-place team. This work chronicles Carlton’s magical season, including the Rick Wise-for-Carlton trade, his 5-1 start following the players’ first-ever strike, his 15-game winning streak, and a number of memorable games along the way. Interviews with Phillies icons, Hall of Famers, and legendary sports writers add insights to this account of Carlton’s remarkable achievements amidst one of the most calamitous periods in Phillies history.
