Direct correlation with IQ increase and cognitive abilityWord games of the type featured in this book are directly related to your ability to solve problems that are simple on the surface but complex underneath, almost exactly like an iceberg. If you want to measure this directly, you can stare at one of these word puzzles for a while, and measure the time you need till you guess the answer correctly (without using hints). If you do this twenty times in a row with twenty different puzzles, and measure the time taken to solve each, you will notice a clear downward trend in the times - this proves that, even over the course of a casual half hour "playthrough" of the word games in this book, there is a clear and measurable improvement in your ability to solve simple or complex lexical problems, and the effect will be much more pronounced as you spend more and more time with all the puzzles in this volume, and in this series. All the benefits of a physical workout, but for your mindAfter a good long workout at the gym, you feel good. Both your body and your mind are refreshed, and even through your tiredness you are happy. The process in the Brains Need Gyms series is very similar: you will go through many difficult puzzles, and flex your mental muscles till you are exhausted. However, the aftermath is positive - you will be able to go back to your other tasks mentally refreshed, and armed with many new logic tools to attack the questions that your daily life throws at you. Go on, gift your brain the gym subscription it's always deserved! At the very least, it's far cheaper than a physical gym subscription, to say nothing of a personal trainer. You will acquire skills that help you get good at other word games that are more mainstreamIf you have always wanted to get better at solving crosswords, this book provides a good way to acquire a formative skill. This book is filled with word puzzles that form the basis of solving crosswords. You will look at an incomplete word, and your brain will go to work recognizing patterns, and you will solve each problem.Creativity boosts, enforced by needing to look at each question in a different wayVery few problems in this book will yield to a straightforward stare-at-it-till-the-answer-manifests-itself-in-front-of-your-eyes technique. Sure, the first few questions in the first few chapters might be solved by this approach, but it will rapidly become apparent to you that you need to invent new ways to look at each problem, so that your brain can acquire the lateral perspective needed to hit the correct answer on the head every time the book throws a fresh challenge at it. So, whether you're looking at interesting letter sequence patterns in the first 5 letters of a word that you have to guess, and ignoring the last few letters temporarily, or filling in placeholder letters in position 2 and 4 (the crucial letters to fill), you will have your hands full with coming up with unique solutions in real time to difficult questions. The feeling of accomplishment when you solve that pesky problem that's been filling your head (and distracting you from real life) for half an hour or longer cannot be understated; it is akin to the pure joy that comes from finally getting rid of a mosquito.

After the birth of her baby triggers a manic maelstrom, Dyane Harwood struggles to survive the bewildering highs and crippling lows of her brain’s turmoil. Birth of a New Brain vividly depicts her postpartum bipolar disorder, an unusual type of bipolar disorder and postpartum mood and anxiety disorder. During her childhood, Harwood grew up close to her father, a brilliant violinist in the Los Angeles Philharmonic who had bipolar disorder. She learned how bipolar disorder could ravage a family, but she never suspected that she’d become mentally ill—until her baby was born. Harwood wondered if mental health would always be out of her reach. From medications to electroconvulsive therapy, from “redwood forest baths” to bibliotherapy, she explored both traditional and unconventional methods of recovery—in-between harrowing psychiatric hospitalizations. Harwood reveals how she ultimately achieved a stable mood. She discovered that despite having a chronic mood disorder, a new, richer life is possible. Birth of a New Brain is the chronicle of one mother’s perseverance, offering hope and grounded advice for those battling mental illness.

Life at its source is creation. When we get nearer to our own inner self we are close to the creative core of life. But we live the life with our body and the body houses the brain.Know that our body and the brain work together as a team; we need to feed our brain with vitamins, minerals, protein and carbohydrates so that it functions efficiently. It is made possible by our body, because body feeds the brain. At every stage of spiritual growth, the close companion we have is our body. Most of us assume that body and spirit stand apart at opposite ends. When we feel sensations that are body-conscious such as hunger and thirst, pain and pleasure, we do not regard them as spiritual experiences. But spirituality must also be sensuous, because a spiritual person is one who lives fully in the present moment, which means living fully in the body. This present moment is a space- time event within the external universe. Just as every cell reflects the overall process of the body, each moment reflects all other moment of past, present, and future.Brain cells need stimulation. If they are not used, they merely sit there and lock up space. If we want to use the maximum potential of the brain, it's up to us to do exercises that will stimulate them. With the mind games and puzzles that are available on the Internet, we can receive the vital stimulation that our brain cells are craving right. Without this stimulation, our brain can only hold so much information. If we overload the brain, its performance will slow down. We must train our brain to gain its full potential.According to scientific research, keeping the brain active by doing brain exercises can cause our brain to maintain a greater number of neurons, commonly called a neuron reserve. These neurons can help us to maintain brainpower as we become older.Working crossword puzzles, solving anagrams, or playing video games are a type of problem solving exercise. The difference is that with these problems, the solution is readily available. With puzzles and anagrams, the solution is typically contained in the book.Further this title cautions us towards disruptive electricity surrounding us. When the power lines and wiring in our home contain frequencies other than the normal 50/60 Hz then disruptive electricity is produced. This is caused by spikes and surges within the wiring that spread electromagnetic radiation around the home. These surges and spikes are caused by things found in typical modern homes including Solar System converters, smart home appliances, and light dimmer switches. These spikes and surges of electric current cause health dysfunction within our body that can affect the immune systems, may cause heart arrhythmias, and can create tingling and rashes on the skin. Health issues cause disrupted sleep, cognitive issues, and/or neuro-developmental symptoms. Disruptive electricity can be one of the highest sources of EMF radiation in our home. Fortunately, there are disruptive electricity filters that can completely and measurably reduce or remove this harmful source of radiation.Meditation strengthens the faculties of mind; in turn mind controls the body. Some people wrongly assume that meditation is something we do in our head. In truth, nothing is just in the head or just in the body. Also, meditation is a spiritual practice. Spirituality is not meant to be separate from the body. The natural goal of the body is to join the mind in perfection and fulfillment. Control of life belongs to awareness and the process of manipulation of heartbeat at will by Yogis indicate that the most basic bodily processes respond to our state of mind. Chapters on brain waves, mind-mapping, mindfulness, and perfect health etc. substantially contribute to healthy maintenance and development of the brain.
