Seminar paper from the year 2020 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 2,0, Ruhr-University of Bochum (Englisches Seminar), course: The Post-9/11 Bond films, language: English, abstract: In this paper, the character M, played by Judi Dench, in the latest Bond films will be examined. In particular her role in Casino Royale and Skyfall will be analysed. The underlying question of this analysis is whether M is just an authority figure to Bond or if she takes on a maternal role. First, the term “authority” will be defined. After that, the differences between male and female authority will be accentuated and questioned. In the fourth paragraph, the maternal role will be further examined to better understand what it means. After that, the analysis of M will begin. First, the character in Casino Royale will be analysed. After that, her role in the movie Skyfall will be examined. After analysing her role in these movies, I will conclude on whether M is an authority figure or if she takes on a maternal role in these movies. Casino Royale (2006) marks a new chapter in the James Bond saga. Judi Dench has been playing M since Golden Eye (1995), but with Casino Royale a new Double-0 agent, Daniel Craig, entered the field. Before that Judi Dench as M has always been interacting with Pierce Brosnan as James Bond. "As in Ian Fleming’s book series, Casino Royale is a prequel and presents the origin story of James Bond". James Bond, played by Daniel Craig, has just received his 00 status which marks the start of the movie. Skyfall (2012) is a contrast to Casino Royale, because Judi Dench as M plays a much bigger role in it. It is her last film in this role. As James Chapman describes it in his book “Licence To Thrill” Daniel Craig in his role as Bond has always been "controlled by female authority" and this era will end with Skyfall. Partly already in Casino Royale, but increasingly in Skyfall M leaves her role as a pure authority person. According to Hobbs the film is "centrally concerned with M" because M is facing a battle that is primarily directed against her.

Revisioning 007 is a lively collection of new essays on the reinvention of James Bond in the 2006 film Casino Royale, starring Daniel Craig in his first appearance as Agent 007. Treating Casino Royale as a case study in popular film culture and as a significant turning point in the 007 series, the book offers innovative readings of the film and its interrelations with the Bond franchise, the culture industry, and recent developments in cinema, society, and world politics. Essay topics range from the analysis of 007's masochism, voyeurism, and hyper-mobility, to the examination of the film's testicular torture scene, the links between international politics and high-stakes gambling, and the changing role of the secret agent in a post-9/11 world order.

Excerpt: Casino Royale Casino Royale (2006) is the twenty-first film in the British James Bond series; it was directed by Martin Campbell and the first to star Daniel Craig as MI6 agent James Bond, as well as the first of the newly rebooted Bond timeline. Based on the 1953 novel of the same name by Ian Fleming, it was adapted by screenwriters Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, and Paul Haggis . It is the third screen adaptation of the Casino Royale novel, which was previously produced as a 1954 television episode and a 1967 satirical film. The film is set at the beginning of James Bond's career as Agent 007, just as he is earning his licence to kill . After preventing a terrorist attack at Miami International Airport, Bond falls for Vesper Lynd, the treasury agent assigned to provide the money he needs to foil a high-stakes poker tournament organised by Le Chiffre . The film's story arc continues in the 22nd James Bond film, Quantum of Solace . It became the highest grossing Bond film until the release of Quantum of Solace . The 2006 film is the only EON Productions adaptation of Fleming's novel. It is a reboot of the Bond franchise, establishing a new timeline and narrative framework not meant to be preceded by, or serve as a prequel to, any previous film (although seen as a prequel). This not only frees the Bond franchise from more than forty years of continuity, but allows the film to show a less experienced and more vulnerable Bond. Casino Royale was released on 16 November 2006. The casting for the movie involved a widespread search for a new actor to portray James Bond, and significant controver...

'My doctor says that I shouldn't have bullets entering my body at any time!' The '60s James Bond spoof Casino Royale is a psychedelic, multi-storylined extravaganza packed with star names, including Peter Sellers, Woody Allen, David Niven, Ursula Andress and Orson Welles. Poorly received at the time of its original release, it has since come to be regarded as a cult classic. In this book, noted television and film researcher Michael Richardson gives the most detailed and comprehensive account ever published of the making of this extraordinary blockbuster, which got so out of control that it became arguably one of the most chaotic productions in cinema history - and certainly the most bizarre James Bond film ever! A series of guides to some of the most talked-about films ever produced. From classics and acclaimed features to lesser-known or overlooked works, but all deserving of critical appraisal. Telos Movie Classics are the perfect way to gain a greater insight into the films you love.

Just what inspired Ian Fleming's original James Bond novels? What exactly did they do to lay the foundations for the classic Bond films of the '60s-and how did the films break with the books? How did EON Productions manage to keep audiences coming back for decades? What really changed in the reboot-and what stayed the same? How do the later Bond novels of writers like John Gardner and William Boyd fit into the bigger picture? JAMES BOND'S EVOLUTION: FROM CASINO ROYALE TO SPECTRE looks at all these questions and more in a study not just of the novels or the films but both which traces the broader Bond phenomenon from its origins in post-World War II Britain to the present. In doing so it looks not just at where it all came from, but how the Bond films and books were transformed time and again to stay popular through six tumultuous decades of political and cultural change.
