In recent years there has been a convergence of trends in chemical reaction engineering and chemistry which have set the stage for significant advances in kinetic and thermodynamic modeling of processes. New analytical chem istry methods, new mathematical methods, and new computational tools facilitate a more fundamental approach and a deeper understanding of chemical reactions in complex mixtures with very large numbers of com pounds, such as petroleum fractions. This fortunate state of affairs has stimulated important new work both in academia and industrial research labs. The purpose of the workshop that led to this book was to bring together researchers at the forefront ofthis field to review the state of the art, stimulate communication and cooperation between industry and academia, and develop a cohesive picture of research trends and future directions. The chapters of the book have been organized into four main areas: • Continuous mixtures, where the very large numbers of discrete com pounds present are regarded as making up a continuum, • Structure-activity relationships, where the nature and rates of the reac tions that a particular molecule undergoes are correlated with its chemical structure, thus allowing the kinetics of very large numbers of compounds to be described by a few parameters, • Kinetic analysis, where mathematical techniques are applied to analyze the behavior of kinetic networks, and • Thermodynamics, emphasizing the practical and computational aspects of chemical equilibrium in complex mixtures.

This book addresses primarily the engineer in industrial process development, the research chemist in academia and industry, and the graduate student intending to become a reaction engineer. In industry, competitive pressures put a premium on scale-up by large factors to cut development time. To be safe, such development should be based on "fundamental" kinetics that reflect the elementary steps of which the reaction consists. The book forges fundamental kinetics into a practical tool by presenting new, effective methods for elucidation of mechanisms and reduction of complexity without unacceptable sacrifice in accuracy: fewer equations (lesser computational load), fewer coefficients (fewer experiment to determine them). For network elucidation, new rules relating network configurations to observable kinetic behaviour allow incorrect networks to be ruled out by whole classes instead of one by one. For modelling, general equations and algorithms are given from which equations for specific networks can be recovered by simple substitutions. The procedures are illustrated with examples of industrial reactions including, among others, paraffin oxidation, ethoxylation, hydroformylation, hydrocyanation, shape-selective catalysis, ethane pyrolysis, styrene polymerization, and ethene oligomerization. Many of the rate equations have not been published before. The expanded edition of the 2001 title, Kinetics of Homogeneous Multistep Reactions includes new chapters on heterogeneous catalysis and periodic and chaotic re-actions; new sections on adsorption, statistical methods, and lumping; and other new detail. * Contains new chapters on heterogeneous catalysis, oscillations and chaos * Includes new sections on statistical methods, lumping adsorption and software and databases * Provides a better understanding of complex reaction mechanisms

Information necessary to solve scientific or engineering problems is often so vast, that the need arises to lump information together into a more manageable subset in order to proceed. The idea of lumping is one which is used, more or less consciously, in a large variety of fields. The thermodynamics and kinetic behavior of multicomponent mixtures is an area where the requirements of lumping have been clearly identified and the techniques and results of lumping have been analyzed in considerable detail. This book comprises the proceedings of a Symposium on Kinetic and Thermodynamic Lumping of Multicomponent Mixtures which was held at the American Chemical Society Meeting in Atlanta, GA, in April 1991. Papers presented at the symposium consisted of both invited and contributed papers. Each invited paper was a review of a subfield within the landscape of the symposium while the contributed papers contain detailed analyses of specific problems. The symposium brought together active researchers in this field to report on and discuss the progress which has been made in the lumping of mixtures of very many components for a number of different applications, and to identify the important problem areas which still remain. This volume will serve both as an introduction to anyone entering the field, and as a reference work for more experienced researchers.

This book - a sequel of previous publications 'Flows andChemical Reactions' and 'Chemical Reactions in Flows andHomogeneous Mixtures' - is devoted to flows with chemical reactionsin heterogeneous environments. Heterogeneous media in thisvolume include interfaces and lines. They may be the site ofradiation. Each type of flow is the subject of a chapter in thisvolume. We consider first, in Chapter 1, the question of the generationof environments biphasic individuals: dusty gas, mist, bubbleflow. Chapter 2 is devoted to the study at the mesoscopicscale: particle-fluid exchange of momentum and heat withdetermination of the respective exchange coefficients. In Chapter3, we establish simplified equations of macroscopic balance formass, for the momentum and energy, in the case of particles of onesize (monodisperse suspension). Radiative phenomena arepresented in Chapter 5.

In this important reference work, Zeliger catalogs the known effects of chemical mixtures on the human body and also proposes a framework for understanding and predicting their actions in terms of lipophile (fat soluble) / hydrophile (water soluble) interactions. The author’s focus is on illnesses that ensue following exposures to mixtures of chemicals that cannot be attributed to any one component of the mixture. In the first part the mechanisms of chemical absorption at a molecular and macromolecular level are explained, as well as the body’s methods of defending itself against xenobiotic intrusion. Part II examines the sources of the chemicals discusssed, looking at air and water pollution, food additives, pharmaceuticals, etc. Part III, which includes numerous case studies, examines specific effects of particular mixtures on particular body systems and organs and presents a theoretical framework for predicting what the effects of uncharacterized mixtures might be. Part IV covers regulatory requirements and the need to adjust recommended exposure levels for products containing mixtures. It also contains recommendations on how to limit exposure to mixtures in the products we use and on how to limit release of mixtures into the environment. Providing brief summaries of each mixture and its effects, Zeliger provides a comprehensive reference, a jumping off point for professionals (with extensive chapter bibliographies) and an introduction to the topic for those studying traditional toxicology. Addressing many inadequately understood illnesses and conditions such as asthma, infertility and cancer, it will also be of interest to health professionals, environmental scientists and lawyers. Presents a theoretical framework for predicting the effects of chemical mixtures for which no specific data exists (this predictive aspect is important due to the vast number of different potential chemical combinations - far too many to comprehensively catalog) A quick and convenient source of hard to come by data on the rapidly developing field of chemical mixtures, for groups including chemists and engineers, toxicologists, health professionals and environmental scientists New and updated material comprises over 30% of this timely new edition, which includes the latest research data alongside an expanded introduction to the science and art of predicting the toxicological properties of chemical mixtures
