Conservation of 20th Century Furniture provides a comprehensive coverage of materials and techniques that are encountered in twentieth century furniture, through both a contextual point of view and through a range of practice perspectives. After putting both the design and manufacture, and the conservation, of 20th centry furniture into context, this volume then offers an A-Z of materials. Within each chapter a wide variety of material types are discussed observed, analysed and contextualized, and further sources for consultation provided. The furniture discussed ranges from designer craftsman individually-made pieces to factory produced batch items, and includes cabinet work, decoration, surface finishes and upholstery, observing the traditional repertoire of materials and the innovative materials and processes introduced during the century. Conservation of 20th Century Furniture is the primary resourse for those studying and conserving twentieth century furniture, and is also of interest to those concerned with a wide range of topics in the manufacture, history and care of twentieth century furniture including curators, dealers and collectors.

The impetus for this book was the desire to systematically organize the extant literature on the conservation of cultural property made of wood, from its beginnings before the Christian Era to the year 2000. Various published reviews and monographs, including Holzkonservierung (Wood Conserva tion) published by the senior author in 1988, have appeared over the years, especially in English and in German. They have provided exemplary treat merit of individual areas or aspects of wood conservation, but a comprehen sive, up-to-date exposition of historic and current developments has been lacking. The diverse professional fields of the authors, as well as their insights into methods of conservation and restoration of wood artifacts in Europe, North America, and Asia provided a solid basis for the success of this under taking. One of the goals during the examination of the literature was that not only well-known conservators and scientists from countries that are leaders in wood conservation should be represented, but that less well-known, often not as readily accessible contributions should also be included. Only in this manner was it possible to draw a comprehensive picture of the national and international state of wood conservation. The Art and Archaeology Technical Abstracts (AATA) of the Getty Institute were very helpful in our efforts to evaluate as many publications as possible.

This well referenced book provides an amply illustrated publication on upholstery conservation which discusses and reviews the issues related to the care, interpretation and treatment of upholstered furniture. Through many well illustrated case studies the inter-disciplinary collaboration fundamental to upholstery conservation, and the complex decision-making process involved in the treatment of upholstered furniture, are made evident. The case histories are contributed by leading international practitioners in the field and concern objects and collections in the care of English Heritage, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and other internationally renowned institutions. Likewise, the contributors, from both sides of the Atlantic, are world-renowned specialists and leaders in this area of conservation working for the public and private sectors. The case histories, illustrated in colour, black and white and specially prepared line drawings, concern object treatment and documentation, the conservation of information, the function and the artefact. They range from the documentation of eighteenth century removable chair covers and the treatment of a nineteenth century carriage to a twentieth century foam-filled chair belonging to a museum.
