The father of geometry, Euclid was a Greek mathematician active in Alexandria during the reign of Ptolemy I (323-283 BC). His treatise on geometry, ‘Elements’, is one of the most influential works in the history of mathematics, serving as the main textbook for teaching mathematics from the time of its first publication until the early twentieth century. In the ‘Elements’, Euclid deduces the theorems of what is now called Euclidean geometry from a small set of axioms. Euclid compiled his treatise from a number of works of earlier mathematicians including Pythagoras, Hippocrates of Chios and Eudoxus of Cnidus, preserving many otherwise lost ideas. One of the very earliest mathematical works to be printed after the invention of the printing press, it has been estimated that ‘Elements’ is second only to the Bible in the number of editions published. Delphi’s Ancient Classics series provides eReaders with the wisdom of the Classical world, with both English translations and the original Greek texts. Saadi is one of the greatest figures of classical Persian literature. His best-known work of poetry is the ‘Bustan’ (The Orchard), composed entirely in epic metre and consisting of stories illustrating the standard virtues recommended to Muslims, as well as offering reflections on the behaviour of dervishes and their ecstatic practices. Saadi also wrote the ‘Gulistan’, a prose collection featuring stories and personal anecdotes. The text is interspersed with a variety of short poems, containing aphorisms, advice and humorous reflections. Saadi’s works are characterised by their unusual blend of kindness and cynicism, always wishing to avoid the hard dilemma, making him, for many, the most widely admired poet of Persian literature. The Delphi Poets Series offers readers the works of literature’s finest poets, with superior formatting. This volume presents Saadi’s collected works, with related illustrations and the usual Delphi bonus material. Saint Gregory the Great was Pope from 590 to 604, launching the famous Gregorian Mission, the first recorded large-scale mission from Rome, to convert the pagan Anglo-Saxons of England to Christianity. The epithet “the Great” reflects Gregory’s status as a celebrated writer as well as a ruler. The fourth and final of the traditional Latin Fathers of the Church, Gregory is now regarded as the first exponent of a truly medieval, sacramental spirituality. His Commentary on Job and his handbook for rulers, Pastoral Rule, were extremely popular treatises throughout the middle ages, while the Dialogues feature a compelling life of Saint Benedict and his many miracles. Gregory’s works provided practical wisdom and enlightenment for the people of the Dark Ages. Delphi’s Ancient Classics series provides eReaders with the wisdom of the Classical world, with both English translations and the original Latin texts. This comprehensive eBook presents Gregory the Great’s collected works, with illustrations, informative introductions and the usual Delphi bonus material. Regarded as the first author of the Symbolist tradition, the French poet Charles Baudelaire almost singlehandedly shifted the literary world from the Romanticism of statement and emotion to the modern poetry of symbol and suggestion. His strikingly original works are noted for their psychological and moral complexity, powerfully representing the thinking of modern man. Baudelaire’s most famous work, ‘Les Fleurs du mal’ (The Flowers of Evil) was published in 1857, when it caused a literary sensation. For many, it is considered the most influential poetry collection of the nineteenth century. The Delphi Poets Series offers readers the works of the world’s finest poets, with superior formatting.
