This in-depth history of the interior design of ocean liners surveys the transient history of interior design in relation to the development of passenger shipping, from commissioning by the line owners, methods and sources for the original creation of designs through to its construction, use and influence. It is a short-lived branch of architecture and design, lasting an average of fifteen years. As the design and taste mirrors and reinforces cultural assumptions about national identity, gender, class and race, not only did the interiors of ocean going liners reflect the changing hierarchies of society and shifting patterns in globalization, but the glamour and styling of the liners were reflected back into the design of interiors on land. Combining design history, architecture history, material and visual cultures, Designing Liners is a richly multidisciplinary work for those studying or researching this application of interior design.

Following the structure of previous editions, Volume 2 of this Sixth Edition proceeds through four individual chapters on geomembranes, geosynthetic clay liners, geofoam and geocomposites. The two volumes must accompany one another. Volume 1 contains geosynthetics, geotextiles, geogrids and geonets. The two volumes must accompany one another. All are polymeric materials used for myriad applications in geotechnical, geoenvironmental, transportation, hydraulic and private development applications. The technology has become a worldwide enterprise with approximate $5B material sales in the 35-years since first being introduced. In addition to describing and illustrating the various materials; the most important test methods and design examples are included as pertains to specific application areas. This latest edition differs from previous ones in that sustainability is addressed throughout, new material variations are presented, new applications are included and references are updated accordingly. Each chapter includes problems for which a solutions manual is available.

By presenting the basics of building science along with aprescribed set of details, Designing the Exterior Wall helpsyou understand why buildings fail and how they can be made moredurable through design. Author Linda Brock connects the science andaesthetics of building envelopes through the examination of avariety of construction and cladding types. She features detailsfrom real world projects in a variety of climates, successful andunsuccessful case studies, and checklists you can use on your ownprojects. Helps you reduce your liability by showing why buildingenvelopes fail and how they can be designed to endure. Moves from theory to actual construction by including hundredsof building envelope details from a broad array of projects andclimates. Integrates numerous contemporary case studies, including FrankGehry's Experiential Music Center in Seattle (thin skins), RenzoPiano's Rue de Meaux housing in Paris (terra cotta cladding), andMario Botta's San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (prefabricatedbrick panels). Designing the Exterior Wall is a must-have book, whetheryou're an architect or a student. Order your copy today.

Water is a special design element in open space planning and one that lends a decidedly distinguished touch. But it is not enough merely to insert water basins and fountains at the appropriate spots in architectural drawings. As early as the design stage the planner must begin to think about where the water is going to come from, where it is going to drain, and how it is going to be cleaned.

Geosynthetic materials have entered the mainstream in the professional arena and are no longer considered new construction material. Professionals need to keep up with the nuances of how geosynthetics work.Emphasizes design by function; overviews all types of geosynthetics, with stand-alone units on particular materials. Uses S.I. units for all problems and examples. Expands coverage of containers and tubes in the geotextile chapter. Discusses walls and slope design, including seismic analysis, in the geogrid chapter. Treats wet landfills, agricultural waste, waste stability, and dam waterproofing in the geomembrane chapter. Discusses new products and related performances in the geosynthetic clay liner chapter. Discusses new products and related behavior, including fiber reinforcement and wall drainage, in the geocomposite chapter. Adds a completely new chapter on geofoam.A useful reference for transportation, geotechnical, environmental, and hydraulics professionals and engineers.

Through a series of case studies from the mid-eighteenth century to the start of the twenty-first, this collection of essays considers the historical insights that ethno/auto/biographical investigations into the lives of individuals, groups and interiors can offer design and architectural historians. Established scholars and emerging researchers shed light on the methodological issues that arise from the use of these sources to explore the history of the interior as a site in which everyday life is experienced and performed, and the ways in which contemporary architects and interior designers draw on personal and collective histories in their practice. Historians and theorists working within a range of disciplinary contexts and historiographical traditions are turning to biography as means of exploring and accounting for social, cultural and material change - and this volume reflects that turn, representing the fields of architectural and design history, social history, literary history, creative writing and design practice. Topics include masters and servants in eighteenth-century English kitchens; the lost interiors of Oscar Wilde's 'House Beautiful'; Elsa Schiaparelli's Surrealist spaces; Jean Genet, outlaws, and the interiors of marginality; and architect Lina Bo Bardi's 'Glass House', São Paulo, Brazil.

The Gulf Drilling Series is a joint project between Gulf Publishing Company and the International Association of Drilling Contractors. The first text in this Series presents casing design and mechanics in a concise, two-part format. The first part focuses on basic casing design and instructs engineers and engineering students how to design a safe casing string. The second part covers more advanced material and special problems in casing design in a user-friendly format. Learn how to select sizes and setting depths to achieve well objectives, determine casing loads for design purposes, design casing properties to meet burst, collapse and tensile strength requirements and conduct casing running operations safely and successfully.

Graphical abstract: Highlights: Designing liners for efficiency through incorporating performance of relining. Relining efficiency will play a significant role in liner design. Benefits of designing liners for efficiency for the industrial case. Abstract: Liners in grinding mills not only protect the mill shell from the aggressive environment inside the mill, but they also play a significant role in the efficiency of grinding. The design of mill liners dictates the charge trajectory and hence the grinding efficiency. The common approach in designing liners is designing for a longer life. However, this approach does not necessarily consider optimum performance over the liner life. It has been observed in many operations that mills under-perform over a significant portion of the liner life (10–25% of the liner life at the beginning and often 5–10% at the end). This paper extends the method proposed by Toor (2013) and Toor et al. (2013) to design liners for performance through investigating the effect of relining efficiency using such an approach in an industrial case. As indicated in the Toor et al. (2013) study, relining efficiency affects the benefits that can be realised by designing liners for efficiency. Russell Mineral Equipment's Mill Reline Director (MRD) analyses the relining process and provides an accurate estimation of relining time for a given scenario. In this study, five different relining scenarios were simulated and compared against the reference reline (i.e. current liner design) to accurately estimate the time required for relining. This is the first study to demonstrate that incorporating relining constraints in the liner design can be used to inform liner design characteristics of a proper design that meets the requirements of an efficient relining practice. JKSimMet simulation for the industrial case predicts a liner which has same lifter face angle as the current liner design with reduced lifter height from 300 mm to 210 mm, could increase the plant throughput by 8% on average while producing a product with same P80 as the current liner. Considering relining time predictions by MRD for the proposed liner, this study predicts a 3.7% increase on average in throughput per annum. Although the proposed strategy will increase the cost of liners plus relining by 31.5% (i.e. A$ 548, 000), the increase in plant throughput is estimated to yield A$ 20.1 M of additional revenue based on data for 12 months to 30 June 2014 from the plant quarterly report.
