Action research has become a valued research and educational development technique -an innovative approach through which a group of participants engage in self-reflection to improve practice. Developing Innovation in Online Learning introduces action research as a method of developing e-learning modules and courses. The book covers both the theory and practice of applying action research principles to develop online learning. The material is grounded in the experiences of practitioners and features practical advice, case studies, models for implementation, a design framework and e-tutoring strategies. The four 'building blocks' of e-learning covered are: * The organisational context * The pedagogic model * The educational setting * The evaluation process This book will be an essential resource for education managers, course developers, and educational researchers.

Hypermedia and multimedia have penetrated the world of computer games, Internet, and CD-ROM based reference manuals. However, the fields of education, schooling, and training ask more specific benefits from them. This book provides practical approaches to transform these media into learning tools. Crucial helping steps include the migration from expository to exploratory learning strategies, the integration of collaborative learning practices in plenary and individualistic teaching styles, and the evolution from test-driven to experience-oriented training. This volume has three goals: * to discuss the concepts of hypermedia, multimedia, and hypertext and review pertinent research lines; * to provide guidelines and suggestions for developing multimedia applications; and * to place technology within a broader context of education and training through a discussion of rich environments for active learning (REALs). The book takes a developmental focus to helpf readers set up and manage the process of developing a multimedia application. It is not a technical or a how-to manual on working with video, sound, digitized graphics, or computer code. The text takes a unique approach to the idea of media-- viewing media as delivery systems: if video is called for, use it; if sound will help in an application, use it. The fundamental guidelines presented here are usually not media specific. Media works only within the strategies with which they are used. Aimed at practitioners--people who teach about or develop multimedia and hypermedia applications--this volume carefully examines the main components and issues in developing applications. It provides suggestions and heuristics for sound, fundamental design processes.

Teachers use e-learning systems to develop course notes and web-based activities to communicate with learners on one side and monitor and classify their progress on the other. Learners use it for learning, communication, and collaboration. Adaptive e-learning systems often employ learner models, and the behavior of an adaptive system varies depending on the data from the learner model and the learner's profile. Without knowing anything about the learner who uses the system, a system would behave in exactly the same way for all learners. Bayesian Networks for Managing Learner Models in Adaptive Hypermedia Systems: Emerging Research and Opportunities is a collection of research on the use of Bayesian networks and methods as a probabilistic formalism for the management of the learner model in adaptive hypermedia. It specifically discusses comparative studies, transformation rules, and case diagrams that support all phases of the learner model and the use of Bayesian networks and multi-entity Bayesian networks to manage dynamic aspects of this model. While highlighting topics such as developing the learner model, learning management systems, and modeling techniques, this book is ideally designed for instructional designers, course administrators, educators, researchers, and professionals.

Hypermedia is not a single technology; it is an integrated electronic environment that combines text, audio, and video into one large file. Users can explore information about a subject using several technologies at the same time. Although the technical foundation for hypermedia was established in the early 1970s, it was not until the late 1980s and early 1990s that the hardware for supporting hypermedia became readily available. In a hypermedia system, each component of stored information is a node, and the nodes are connected by paths. The paths that a user travels are determined by interest, experience, and need. Hypermedia systems have many classroom applications, and can revolutionize a student's view of learning with the hardware and software currently available. As hypermedia technology develops, the educational environment will advance beyond lectures, notetaking, and other common forms of learning. "Edutainment," the combining of education and entertainment, and virtual reality are extensions of hypermedia that promise to improve the learning environment. A 13-item resource list cites the names and addresses of organizations and journals that provide information about hypermedia. (SLD)
