The contributors to this volume use case studies todiscover the lessons learned so far from successful andunsuccessful attempts to democratize evaluation. They offer tenquestions to guide evaluation planning from a deliberative, democratic viewpoint, and look at a failed attempt at inclusiveevaluation to analyze how deliberative intentions can be distorted.Focusing on participation, they discuss how best to use differenttypes of dialogue to make evaluation more participatory, examine anevaluation program in a psychiatric institution to explore thechallenge of employing participatory, democratic approaches in ananti-democratic environment, and more. Nutrition Research: Concepts & Applications is written for nutrition students in undergraduate and graduate programs who are beginning to develop the skills necessary to become knowledgeable research consumers, conduct and document research projects, and understand how to use research findings in practice. The first text of its kind to clearly explain each section of a research paper to students who are new at the process, this title outlines how to read and analyze research by learning concepts, such as sampling design or relative risk, and then seeing these abstract ideas brought to life in actual research articles. Students also apply these concepts in Application Questions and Critical Thinking Exercises in which they write abstracts, answer questions about evidenced-based study data, or use a checklist to critique a study. Students also learn the nuts and bolts of searching databases for appropriate articles, using systematic reviews such as the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics

As much as Americans believe in the promise of an egalitarian, color-blind society, the reality is far from that ideal. People of color consistently lag behind their white counterparts in key quality-of-life areas. Despite many significant gains, widespread structural inequalities continue to exist and thrive. Race and Social Problems takes the long view of this state of affairs, offering both multi-level analysis and a practical blueprint for social justice. It begins by explaining how race-related social problems have changed over the decades. This volume identifies factors contributing to their persistence in this century, most notably the central role of economic disparities in exacerbating related social problems and replicating them for future generations. The chapters expand on this knowledge by detailing innovative and successful strategies for addressing aspects of six major areas of inequality: Poverty: challenging standard American concepts of poverty. Education: approaches toward closing the achievement gap. Intergroup relations: enhancing race dialogues. Family and lifespan: programs targeting families, youth, and elderly. Criminal justice: reducing incarceration and increasing public safety. Health and mental health: promoting positive outcomes. Race and Social Problems casts a wide net across the most pressing social issues, clarifying both the immediate and larger tasks ahead for a range of professionals in such diverse fields as social work, anthropology, communications, criminology, economics, history, law, political science, psychology, public health, and sociology.

The SAGE Handbook for Social Research Methods is a must for every social-science researcher. It charts the new and evolving terrain of social research methodology, covering qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods in one volume. The Handbook includes chapters on each phase of the research process: research design, methods of data collection, and the processes of analyzing and interpreting data. As its editors maintain, there is much more to research than learning skills and techniques; methodology involves the fit between theory, research questions, research design, and analysis.

Cultural values and traditions are evolving to keep pace with the social changes in Malawi. At the same time, certain religious groups with origins in Christianity or in Islam are proselytising in a way that is militant and provokes discord. Religious fundamentalism brings with it the danger of dividing rather than uniting people. An objective of this work is to promote pluralism and tolerance. It is the result of two year's work by the Centre for Social Concern in Lilongwe. Groups were set up in Karonga and Nkhotakota to promote dialogue aiming to increase awareness and combat prejudices. The groups then concentrated on an area of social concern which they considered a priority: HIV/Aids, and economic literacy. The groups continue to meet, and it is hoped that their work will stimulate similar dialogues by others. The five section in the book deal with Preparations; Research Activities and Findings; Inter-Religious Dialogue for Peaceful Togetherness; Development Interventions; Conclusions and Maintaining Momentum.
