When Ted and Pudge went to the All-American camp, it was for a summer of good fun. Then they discovered that they were really entered in a contest-a contest involving $50,000 for the college boy who won it. Ted just had to win that prize, both to keep baseball at College tech and to ensure his father's job as baseball coach. How he engaged in a deadly fight with wolves and was entombed in an old mine shaft with a ferocious bear are only two of the many adventures he had. Ted Moran wins out in a breathless story of heroism and resourcefuless that will thrill its readers.

The hydrology of small forest streams in western Oregon varies by time and space in terms of both streamflow and channel hydraulics. Overland flow rarely occurs on undisturbed soils. Instead, water is transmitted rapidly through soils to stream channels by displacement of stored soil water. Drainage networks expand and contract according to the interaction between precipitation characteristics and soil's capability to store and transmit water. Drainage networks are more extensive in winter than in summer. Streamflow may he 1,000 to 5,000 times greater during winter storms than during summer low flow. A stream's kinetic energy varies along with streamflow. Channel width and depth, heterogeneity of bed materials, and the accumulation of large, organic debris affects the dissipation of kinetic energy. Clearcutting can increase relatively small peak flows, but forest roads and extensive areas of soil compacted by other means may increase larger peak flows. Both roadbuilding and clearcutting can cause soil mass movements, which can drastically alter a stream's channel hydraulics by adding debris or scouring the charnel to bedrock. Removal of naturally occurring organic debris that has become part of a stable channel can accelerate bed and bank erosion.

In southeast Nicaragua, recent waves of illegal deforestation for cattle pasture are damaging the Indio-Maiz Biological Reserve (IMBR) and Rama-Kriol territory (RKT), with negative consequences to aquatic ecosystems and the people who rely on services they provide. Deforestation and subsequent land use are causing shifts in stream community structure that are mediated by changes in stream habitat. This study integrated temporally explicit land use information with stream habitat, macroinvertebrate, freshwater shrimp, and fish community data to assess impacts of deforestation on 15 headwater streams in southeast Nicaragua's poorly studied protected rainforests. The new calculation, deforestation history index (DFI), a product of deforestation amount and time since deforestation for the catchment draining to each stream reach, was the best linear predictor of most taxa responses-better than other habitat metrics and raw forest cover at multiple scales. Stream reaches that were deforested for a longer time and to a larger extent-thus having higher values for the DFI-had less large wood, organic debris, macroalgae, and macrophytes; more stream bank erosion and sedimentation; degraded riparia; lower diversity and abundance of macroinvertebrates, shrimp, and fish; higher invertebrate evenness; and distinct changes in invertebrate community composition. All deforested reaches also had smaller sized game fish. New registers of fish species and insect genera were recorded for Nicaragua. As this is the first aquatic study in these watersheds of the IMBR and RKT, this region should be a high priority for further research and conservation investment before it is lost.

The United States Forest Service (USFS) has filed channel maintenance instream flow claims at approximately 570 sites in the National Forests of Colorado Water Divisions 1 and 3 and is contemplating claims in Water Divisions 2 and 7. It is concluded from this study that the 570 streams on which the USFS has filed claims in Water Divisions 1 and 3 are generally steep mountain streams with relatively small drainage areas. Based on data and analysis from several sites with characteristics typical of the National Forest streams considered in this study where significant diversion has been conducted over a long period of time, no discernable differences in stream morphological characteristics could be detected between the up- and downstream channels that could be attributed to flow diversion.
