This text examines the controversy surrounding the Garbage Pail Kids trading cards in the 1980s through the theoretical framework laid out by Lee Edelman in No Future: Queer Theory and the Death Drive. It argues that the negative reaction to the Garbage Pail Kids is symptomatic of what Edelman terms reproductive futurism, namely a structural predetermination of political discourse, through the figuration of the ‘child,’ which casts outside the conceptual domain any queer opposition to heteronormative regulation. As an abject parody of this figure, the Garbage Pail Kids promoted a vision of the child as perverse, narcissistic, and anti-social, qualities typically coded as queer within hegemonic culture. However, due to the unprecedented popularity of the Garbage Pail Kids among actual children, the discursive logic of reproductive futurism was unable to properly displace this divergent enjoyment onto an external antagonist, signifying a prohibited encounter between those subjects coded as the child and enjoyments coded as queer. As a result of this divergence, the Garbage Pail Kids phenomena produced a spectral content that this text refers to as the queer child. The queer child, a signifier structurally paradoxical as it is ironic, refers neither to an identity nor a speculative project, but to the specter of a prohibited encounter – an unholy union between two oppositonally defined forces that creates a radical perversion. This text treats this brief moment of rupture as a means to complicate the antisocial queer ethics Edelman promotes in No Future. Thereby it proposes a queer negativity that both refuses the oppressive logic of reproductive futurism, while insisting on the radical perversion of the child that it holds as its most privileged object.

Garbage Pail Kids—a series of collectible stickers produced by Topps in the 1980s—combined spectacular artwork and over-the-top satire. The result was an inspired collaboration between avant-garde cartoonists and humorists including Art Spiegelman, Mark Newgarden, John Pound, Tom Bunk, and Jay Lynch. A new generation of fans continues to embrace this pop-culture phenomenon as Garbage Pail Kids stickers are still being published. Now, for the first time, all 206 rare and hard-to-find images from Series 1 through 5 are collected in an innovative package, along with a special set of four limited-edition, previously unreleased bonus stickers. This exciting follow up to Wacky Packages is guaranteed to appeal to die-hard collectors as well as a new generation of fans. Praise for Garbage Pail Kids: "If you ask me, reliving my time with Bad Breath Seth and Potty Scotty is worth the cover price alone." —USAToday.com "I worried that [the Garbage Pail Kids] might seem too time-bound for their own good; but if anything, 27 years later, they’re more poignant. Maybe it’s because I’m a worried, concerned adult, but more likely it’s because nothing is ever as funny as it is when you’re ten years old—and everything is a lot scarier." —CapitalNewYork.com "The book is a wonderfully designed tribute to these shit-disturbing cards in all their graphic, full-color glory." —ComicsBeat.com "There's a lot of interesting stuff in Spiegel man's intro, and in the afterward by John Pound, the artist who originated and drew the bulk of the Kids. But the real reason to buy this book is for the graphic brilliance of the art itself…" —Boston Phoenix

A New York Times Notable Book Filled with beautiful full-color art, dynamic storytelling, and insightful analysis, Hillary Chute reveals what makes one of the most critically acclaimed and popular art forms so unique and appealing, and how it got that way. “In her wonderful book, Hillary Chute suggests that we’re in a blooming, expanding era of the art... Chute’s often lovely, sensitive discussions of individual expression in independent comics seem so right and true.” — New York Times Book Review Over the past century, fans have elevated comics from the back pages of newspapers into one of our most celebrated forms of culture, from Fun Home, the Tony Award–winning musical based on Alison Bechdel’s groundbreaking graphic memoir, to the dozens of superhero films that are annual blockbusters worldwide. What is the essence of comics’ appeal? What does this art form do that others can’t? Whether you’ve read every comic you can get your hands on or you’re just starting your journey, Why Comics? has something for you. Author Hillary Chute chronicles comics culture, explaining underground comics (also known as “comix”) and graphic novels, analyzing their evolution, and offering fascinating portraits of the creative men and women behind them. Chute reveals why these works—a blend of concise words and striking visuals—are an extraordinarily powerful form of expression that stimulates us intellectually and emotionally. Focusing on ten major themes—disaster, superheroes, sex, the suburbs, cities, punk, illness and disability, girls, war, and queerness—Chute explains how comics get their messages across more effectively than any other form. “Why Disaster?” explores how comics are uniquely suited to convey the scale and disorientation of calamity, from Art Spiegelman’s representation of the Holocaust and 9/11 to Keiji Nakazawa’s focus on Hiroshima. “Why the Suburbs?” examines how the work of Chris Ware and Charles Burns illustrates the quiet joys and struggles of suburban existence; and “Why Punk?” delves into how comics inspire and reflect the punk movement’s DIY aesthetics—giving birth to a democratic medium increasingly embraced by some of today’s most significant artists. Featuring full-color reproductions of more than one hundred essential pages and panels, including some famous but never-before-reprinted images from comics legends, Why Comics? is an indispensable guide that offers a deep understanding of this influential art form and its masters.

There are also samples of his trading card illustrations (for Garbage Pail Kids and other Topps Chewing Gum series) and his paintings. Lynch also narrates his life story throughout the book, from his dysfunctional childhood to the day he selected his coffin and headstone, in a half-century series of interviews and correspondence with comic historian Patrick Rosenkranz.
