Mark Anderson hasnt given up on the United States, not at all. But hes deeply disillusioned, and savors the low professional profile he maintains as a small-college American Studies instructor in New Hampshire. But when his son (the young are always hopeful, he reminds himself) comes up with a scheme that even Mark thinks might work--a way to bring the Independent voters together as a coherent force--his life changes. His lifelong friend and classmate, Herb Meyer, along with another classmate, iconoclastic Tom Swensen, join Mark in what they all think will be a manageable enterprise. But events begin to outrun the three friends' expectations, and move them into a fast-paced adventure. Many twists and turns lead to a severe crisis--for them and for the nation. As the national election of 2008 looms, explore with Mark and his friends and adversaries where the conditions of today could lead us in the near future. This is a thoughtful, action-packed tale with vividly drawn characters who are independent, daring and informed, and who choose to run increasingly large risks. These characters give dramatic meaning to the word citizen.

"I think, every once in a while, about the life I should be living, the one I fully expected to be enjoying right about now. In the life I was supposed to have, my husband and I would be admiring the view from our waterfront home in the town where we were both born and raised. Good friends and neighbors would be next door, up the street, and all over the neighborhood. Our parents would live only blocks away, in our childhood homes. We'd be taking our grandchildren to the beach club on weekends, enjoying the fruits of our labors and looking forward to a peaceful retirement. That was the plan, anyway . . . but the whole world knows how that turned out." Mary Jo Buttafuoco's anonymous life as a suburban wife and mother in sleepy Massapequa, New York, on Long Island, ended in May 1992, when she was shot in the head on her own front porch by her husband's sixteen-year-old mistress. The 'Long Island Lolita' saga sparked a media frenzy that continues to this day. As the years passed and Mary Jo steadfastly stood by her man, Joey Buttafuoco, while he and Amy Fisher continued to make headlines, one question lingered in the minds of people everywhere: Why did she stay for so long? In Getting It Through My Thick Skull, Mary Jo finally answers that question fully and convincingly. The answer is simple, yet it took almost three decades of turmoil to discover for herself—she was married to a sociopath. Using her tragic and triumphant life lessons and never-before-told accounts of life with Joey, Mary Joe helps readers undrestand sociaopathic behavior and the emotional traps it springs on willing partners, and offers hope and help for the millions of people caught in the cycle of toxic relationships. In addition, readers will meet a new-and-improved Mary Jo, confident and at peace with her new life, and will be inspired by her comback. Through private details of the resiliency and rebuilding she has forged over the past seventeen years, Mary Jo shares for the first time: Her addiction to painkillers and her recovery through the Betty Ford Center Her overdue decision to leave Joey and start over again in California—3,000 miles from her support system Taking control of her physical, spiritual, and emotional health and learned to feel attractive and in control again Her highly controversial forgiveness of Amy Fisher The letters she recieved from both Amy and Joy, and her reactions to both How she found the courage to trust, believe, and find hope in a committed relationship once again The details of the new love in her life and the joys and challenges of raising a Brady Bunch—style family Includes a 16-page color insert from the Buttafuoco family album.

Using intelligent satire, Jane Rosen brings new life and insight to the ongoing dialogue for women in leadership. She takes a daring, sacrilegious approach to the issues of what women have accomplished, what hurdles remain in the climb up the corporate ladder and, how to overcome those hurdles in heels. Women in business need a good laugh and this book hits that funny bone chapter after chapter. An entertaining read that will inform, uplift and inspire. After all, if the Goddess could share the Acropolis with the great Gods of Greek mythology, then why can't she share a seat alongside the mere mortals of the corporate boardroom?

IT'S IN THE MEMORIES In the fall of 2002 our life took a strange twist. We had no way of knowing what was coming or how devastating it would be. In September 2002 we had the world on a string and all seemed to be moving fantastically well. Then along comes mid September and it all starts its spin out of control. I have tried very hard to put our entire journey with its exhilarating ups and its savage downs into perspective. I thought of all the things I had retained through the years that should help guide you through the storm: "Tomorrow's another day" "Things can only get better" "God never gives you more than you can bear" "There is always the calm after the storm" "The future will be brighter" "Everything is for a reason" But none of those clichés would help us distance our heartbreak or calm our fraying nerves. Trouble came in the form of troubles at the office. I was put on warning for something I did not do. This was startling to me because in all my years I was never ever put on warning. But that would be nothing compared to what would happen next. In November there would be an accident that would take one of our family member's lives and leave in its wake a family that could not put the pieces back together of our broken dreams. Shortly after our family's loss I would be stunned at the death of a close friend and coworker. His senseless death along with Matthew's only etched the pain Santa and I were feeling even deeper. Our family had gotten exceptionally close after my mother died in 1998 by spending our good times together. Easter's, Thanksgivings, Christmas' and New Year's were celebrated at my cousin Ward and Cindy's home. With their son Matthew getting killed we would now be left shredded, emotionally bankrupt and in search of shelter. The thought that there was more to come never entered our beleaguered minds. The New Year came in quietly skulking its way into our realization. But 2003 was less than two weeks old when Death would pay us another visit. Our son who had just turned 30 in December was killed on January 12th 2003 when his truck left the road and hit a tree on his way home. It would take every ounce of our faith to pull through such a cataclysmic loss. Without the thoughts, gestures, and strong shoulders of our friends and family we never would have made it. In the following months we would deal with many unexpected feelings and occurrences. I have tried to relate these last 2 years in a way that makes sense but also will be hopefully a help to others. Here we are two years later, without Matthew, without Damien, without Michael; and as of April without a job. Our families still lie torn and in torment. Santa and I are still standing and not only that; we are standing strong. Santa and I are closer now than ever. Events have changed our attitudes, our way of thinking, our way of trusting and as a result our way of living. My faith in God has been made stronger. My faith in angels and the hereafter has deepened. My focus is directed to Michael Delaney Jr., Keirsten Farley and Billie Marie Krauss; our three grandchildren. What is past is past but what we make of the future is totally up to us. I want these children to find comfort, stability and pride in the way Santa and I have carried on. I have no doubt that Michael is with Santa and I each and every day. We take comfort in his presence and know he would be satisfied at the way we have chosen to carry on and how we have chosen to remember him.

Brave, bighearted... An absolutely absorbing book of challenging power, a story of almost unbearable tensions. A modern life played out against the chaos of "me" and the divine order of "we." Marie Dadisman The observations made in this work regarding the social impact of our current social strategies are poignant observations that beckon the reader to evaluate whether, or not, they wish to embrace and support our current paradigms for social order.

Bob Nelson, author of the multimillion-copy bestseller 1001 Ways to Reward Employees, and human performance expert Mario Tamayo offer hundreds of practical, creative tips for helping employees—and their managers—make work more fun. According to the employees that work for firms listed in Fortune's “100 Best Companies to Work for in America,” the most defining characteristic of these organizations is they are all “fun” places to work. Fun is the secret sauce every business needs to better engage and motivate its employees today. Work Made Fun Gets Done! gives readers simple, practical ideas for instantly bringing fun into their work and workplace. Based on examples from scores of companies like Zoom, Pinterest, Bank of America, Zappos, Honda, Microsoft, and many more, this book provides clear examples of exactly what managers and employees alike can do to lighten the tone in the work environment and allow employees to have more fun at work. From AAA's “Dump a Dog” program where workers can pass their least-wanted project on to their manager and Houzz's complimentary office slippers to CARFAX's themed-wardrobe Zoom meetings and Google's company-approved Nerf-gun battles and paper airplane contests, you'll find dozens of ideas you can immediately adapt and implement in your own workplace. Work and fun have typically been considered polar opposites, but this book proves they can be integrated in ways that produce more motivated workers—and exceptional results.
