Go the Fuck to Sleep is a bedtime book for parents who live in the real world, where a few snoozing kitties and cutesy rhymes don't always send a toddler sailing off to dreamland. Profane, affectionate and refreshingly honest, it captures the familiar and unspoken tribulations of putting your child to bed for the night. Colourfully illustrated and hilariously funny, this is a breath of fresh air for parents new, old and expectant.* *(You probably shouldn't read this to your children.)

Co-founder and editor in chief of The Huffington Post Arianna Huffington shows how our cultural dismissal of sleep as time wasted compromises our health and our decision-making and undermines our work lives, our personal lives--and even our sex lives in this New York Times bestseller. We are in the midst of a sleep deprivation crisis, with profound consequences to our health, our job performance, our relationships and our happiness. What we need is nothing short of a sleep revolution: only by renewing our relationship with sleep can we take back control of our lives. In The Sleep Revolution, Arianna explores all the latest science on what exactly is going on while we sleep and dream. She takes on the sleeping pill industry, and all the ways our addiction to technology disrupts our sleep. She also offers a range of recommendations and tips from leading scientists on how we can get better and more restorative sleep, and harness its incredible power. The result is a sweeping, scientifically rigorous, and deeply personal exploration of sleep from all angles, from the history of sleep, to the role of dreams in our lives, to the consequences of sleep deprivation, and the new golden age of sleep science that reveals the vital role sleep plays in our every waking moment and every aspect of our health--from weight gain, diabetes, and heart disease to cancer and Alzheimer’s. In today's fast-paced, always-connected, perpetually-harried and sleep-deprived world, our need for a good night’s sleep is more important--and elusive--than ever. The Sleep Revolution both sounds the alarm on our worldwide sleep crisis and provides a detailed road map to the great sleep awakening that can help transform our lives, our communities, and our world.

All aspects of sleep sciences are included in this excellent resource text, with special reference to sleep substances and sleep modulators. The historical development of the theories of sleep are reviewed in conjunction with the technical problems. All candidate substances are overviewed as to their sites of presence, chemical nature, bioassay techniques, physiological and pharmacological effects. On the basis of a standardized methodology developed by the author, sleep-modulatory characteristics of some substances are compared and evaluated in quantitative terms. The sleep regulatory mechanisms, which are composed of complex neurohumoral subsystems, are analyzed from the results of recent neurophysiological and neuroendocrinological experiments. Furthermore, an evolutionary aspect of sleep substances is taken into consideration. Light therapy' is established worldwide as the treatment of choice for seasonal affective disorder. It is also successfuly used in nonseasonal depression, as well as for many other psychiatric and neurologic illnesses, and in sleep medicine. ‘Wake therapy’ is the fastest antidepressant known. Imaging studies show that both methods share neurobiological substrates with antidepressants, but act much faster. 'Chronotherapeutics' – the combination of light and wake therapy – achieves rapid results and, by reducing residual symptoms, also minimises relapse. Written by three prominent clinical and research experts in biological rhythms, this manual aims to broaden knowledge and practical application of these non-pharmacologic interventions for bipolar and unipolar disorders. Clinical understanding is deepened by an explanation of the circadian timing system and sleep regulatory mechanisms which underlie the novel treatment strategy. The step-by-step guide and description of the interventions in centers throughout the world provides clear hands-on instructions, supported by a solid body of clinical research. The first edition of 'Chronotherapeutics for Affective Disorders' has kindled a network of psychiatrists and psychologists who are actively introducing these treatments for their inpatients and outpatients. This manual is also essential reading for primary care physicians, sleep medicine specialists and health care administrators.

Sleep-wake disorders frequently give rise to severe ailments and varied distresses in a great number of people in the world, disturbing their physical and mental activities and their social function. Sleep-wake disorders are now classified into a great number of cate gories according to their clinical features and etiological factors. Patients with sleep-wake disorders are taken care of not only by specialists for such disorders but also by general physicians and specialists of different physical and mental disorders. In the recent years, the nature of sleep and sleep-wake disorders have been intensively studied by investiga tors belonging to different fields of science including medicine, biology, and psychology in many countries. It is very important for the progress of research that investigators work ing in the related fields in different countries meet together and exchange their findings and ideas. The Japanese-German International Symposium on Sleep-Wake Disorders was held on October 9-10th, 1996 in the old, beautiful city of Erfurt (Germany). This symposium was organized by Professor Karlheinz Meier-Ewert (Schwalmstadt, Germany) and Dr. Masako Okawa (Ichikawa, Japan), with support of the German Society of Sleep Research (President at that time, Professor J. H. Peter) and of the Japanese Society of Sleep Research (President at that time, Professor Y. Hishikawa).

Professor Detlev Ploog On March 19-21, 1989, a symposium entitled "Integrative Biological Psychiatry" was held at the Ringberg Castle (Bavaria) to honor the scientific work of Detlev Ploog, who retired at that time from his position as the Director of the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry in Munich. The lectures represent an overview of the scientific work conducted at the Max Planck Institute within the recent past and thus also reflect the scientific intentions and research strategies of Detlev Ploog, who brought together extremely divergent tendencies within basic and clinical research and integrated the findings to elucidate new perspectives for fundamental psychiatric problems. His ability to combine topics such as brain and behavior with neuropsychological, neuroethological, psychopharmacological, and behavioral aspects generated a scientific climate in which psychiatric research flourished. The chapters in the present volume represent a documentation of this integrative view on psychiatry, and we, who worked together with Detlev Ploog as his university colleagues at the Ludwig Maximilians University (H. H. ), the Technical University of Munich (H. L. ) and as his successor at the Max Planck Institute (F. H. ) wish him, also after his retirement, continued scientific success, with many additional contributions to modern psychiatry. Hanns Hippius Florian Holsboer Hans Lauter Preface One of the main purposes of science is to elaborate models of natural processes that should be as realistic as possible.
