Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Sociology - Medical Care, grade: 1,0, University of Aberdeen (College of Life Sciences and Medicine), language: English, abstract: Scarcity of Healthcare professionals especially Doctors and Nurses is a worldwide phenomenon. On one hand demographic factors like population growth is bringing problems with it for example the demand of more healthcare, on the other hand the ageing population also comes up with age related diseases like Alzheimer’s and Dementia. If Health Technology fails to develop further, it is obvious that we will have to face difficult challenges in the future. To meet the demand of more healthcare professionals, countries like the UK are very dependent on foreign countries that supply such people, like nurses from some East Asian countries. The scarcity of Healthcare Professionals is also a big problem for developing countries. Population growth and ageing not only generates the scarcity of health professionals but also brings the need to expand health infrastructures. For example, the healthcare institutions and health workforce that exist today were designed when the size of population was lower. So, today with higher growth of population, the expansion of health-infrastructures as well as health personnel is vital to meet the demand and to maintain the quality of healthcare.

Healers Abroad:Americans Responding to the Human Resource Crisis in HIV/AIDS calls for the federal government to create and fund the United States Global Health Service (GHS) to mobilize the nations best health care professionals and other highly skilled experts to help combat HIV/AIDS in hard-hit African, Caribbean, and Southeast Asian countries. The dearth of qualified health care workers in many lowincome nations is often the biggest roadblock to mounting effective responses to public health needs. The proposals goal is to build the capacity of targeted countries to fight the HIV/AIDS pandemic over the long run. The GHS would be comprised of six multifaceted components. Full-time, salaried professionals would make up the organizations pivotal service corps, working side-by-side with other colleagues already on the ground to provide medical care and drug therapy to affected populations while offering local counterparts training and assistance in clinical, technical, and managerial areas.

HIV/AIDS reverses life expectancy gains, erodes productivity, consumes savings and dilutes growth efforts, threatening the realization of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Africa. The report is the result of an extensive analytical and consultative process begun in 2006, that engaged more than 1,000 people from over 30 countries and many institutions mostly in Africa, as well as UN agencies, multilateral and bilateral donors, and foundations. The report reaffirms the Bank's commitment to combating HIV/AIDS in Africa, moving from its initial emergency response to the next phase, including the goal to provide at least US $250 million annually and to create an Africa HIV/AIDS Incentive Fund to enhance the evidence base, promote the multisectoral response and provide technical support, analysis and policy advice to countries.

The discipline of travel medicine has grown in recent years in parallel with the large increase in tourist travel. Travellers frequently visit countries where they face hazards from the climate, the environment or the presence of diseases not encountered at home. Travelling itself may also pose health hazards such as those associated with long-distance flights. Pharmacists and other healthcare professionals thus frequently encounter patients with health problems as a consequence of travel. Increasingly, they are also asked for advice on preventative taken to avoid travel-related illness. "Travel Health" is an introductory text which forms a concise reference source for pharmacists and other healthcare professionals.

Since the early twentieth century, politically engaged and socially committed U.S. health professionals have worked in solidarity with progressive movements around the world. Often with roots in social medicine, political activism, and international socialism, these doctors, nurses, and other health workers became comrades who joined forces with people struggling for social justice, equity, and the right to health. Anne-Emanuelle Birn and Theodore M. Brown bring together a group of professionals and activists whose lives have been dedicated to health internationalism. By presenting a combination of historical accounts and first-hand reflections, this collection of essays aims to draw attention to the longstanding international activities of the American health left and the lessons they brought home. The involvement of these progressive U.S. health professionals is presented against the background of foreign and domestic policy, social movements, and global politics.

This paper presents unique evidence on health workers' career choices in Ethiopia. It shows that challenges like health workers' limited willingness to work in rural areas, as well as their likelihood to migrate abroad vary substantially and are correlated with background, motivation, and job satisfaction. Governments in Africa have identified human resources for health as a priority to improve health outcomes. This study is a valuable resource to better understand health worker choices and help toward the design of more effective human resource policies. This working paper was produced as part of the World Bank s Africa Region Health Systems for Outcomes (HSO) Program. The Program, funded by the World Bank, the Government of Norway, the Government of the United Kingdom and the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), focuses on strengthening health systems in Africa to reach the poor and achieve tangible results related to Health, Nutrition and Population. The main pillars and focus of the program center on knowledge and capacity building related to Human Resources for Health, Health Financing, Pharmaceuticals, Governance and Service Delivery, and Infrastructure and ICT.
