This early work on Martin Luther is both expensive and hard to find in its first edition. It details the life of the monk responsible for translating the Bible from Latin into German and for inspiring the Lutheran movement. This is a fascinating work and is thoroughly recommended for anyone interested in the history of European religion. This book is about the life of Martin Luther and his continuing impact on the world. Luther is raised in a conservative and disciplined home and goes on to become a monk without his father's initial blessing. Luther does everything a monk should do. He is committed to prayer, fasting, vigils, preaching, and teaching to the point of exhaustion. He continues his education and goes on to become a leader in the Catholic Church.

Robeson's international achievements as a singer and actor in starring roles on stage and screen made him the most celebrated black American of his day, but his outspoken criticism of racism in the United States, his strong support of African independence, and his fascination with the Soviet Union placed him under the debilitating scrutiny of McCarthyism. Blacklisted, his famed voice silenced, Here I Stand offered a bold answer to his accusers. It remains today a defiant challenge to the prevailing fear and racism that continues to characterize American society.

Biography of a forgotten poet who used his name and influence to speak up for those on the margins of society. Few surnames resonate in American history more than Beecher. The family’s abolitionist ministers, educators, and writers are central figures in the historical narrative of the United States. The Beechers’ influence was greatest in the nineteenth century, but the family story continued—albeit with less public attention—with a descendant who grew up in Birmingham, Alabama, during the early twentieth century. John Beecher (1904–1980) never had the public prominence of his famous ancestors, but as a poet, professor, sociologist, New Deal administrator, journalist, and civil rights activist, he spent his life fighting for the voiceless and oppressed with a distinct moral sensibility that reflected his self-identification as the twentieth-century torchbearer for his famous family. While John Beecher had many vocations in his lifetime, he always considered himself a poet and a teacher. Some critics have compared the populist elements of Beecher’s poetry to the work of Walt Whitman and Carl Sandburg, but his writing never gained a broad audience or critical acclaim during his lifetime. In Here I Stand: The Life and Legacy of John Beecher, Angela J. Smith examines Beecher’s writing and activism and places them in the broader context of American culture at pivotal points in the twentieth century. Employing his extensive letters, articles, unpublished poetry and prose, and audio interviews in addition to his numerous published books, Smith uncovers a record of public concerns in American history ranging from the plight of workers in 1920s steel mills to sharecroppers’ struggles during the Depression to the civil rights movement of the 1960s.

"Here I Stand: the Monk Who Turned Religion Upside Down" is a full-length stage musical depicting many historical events of the 16th century during Martin Luther's life, including: his lightning-storm moment and commitment to monastic life; his tormented mental state; his disappointment with the corruption in Rome; his opposition to the sale of indulgences; his awakening to God's grace; his famous posting of the Ninety-Five Theses; his defiant burning of the Pope's Papal Bull; his courageous stand at the Diet of Worms; his "kidnapping" and translation of the Bible into German; his opposition to the peasant uprising; and his assistance to escaping monks and nuns--one of whom was Katharina von Bora, who became his faithful wife and mother of six. The story, with its thirty songs, is sprinkled with fictional characters, humor, and drama. About the author: John Buckley Sleadd, musician-composer, retired teacher-pastor, began writing full-length musicals in 2016 with "The Prodigals: Faith Can Lead You Home." In 2017 he wrote "Here I Stand." In 2019 he rearranged many of the tracks and produced an album of sixteen songs from "Here I Stand." He is now writing his third full-length musical (2019). He and his wife Arden founded Clarion Theatre Company to produce family-friendly, faith-building theatre works "to make 'em laugh, make 'em cry, send them home happy and humming."
