Winnie is the star of the bestselling Winnie the Horse Gentler series that sold more than half a million copies and taught kids around the world about faith, kindness, and horse training. Winnie could ride horses before she could walk, but training them is another story. In this new series, eight-year-old Winnie learns the fine art of horse gentling from her horse wrangler mom as they work together to save the family ranch. When Winnie’s snobby classmate threatens to stop boarding his champion thoroughbred Princess at the Willis family ranch, Winnie has to come up with a tricky solution to convince him to let her stay. She learns that with God, all things are possible!

This book presents cross-discipline studies covering aspects ranging from animal science to social/consumer sciences and psychology, with the aim to collect and disseminate information promoting the continuous enhancement of animal welfare by improving stakeholders’ perception of animal welfare. Although animal welfare is about how the animals perceive the surrounding environment, the actual welfare of the animals is dependent on how the stakeholders perceive and weigh animal welfare. The stakeholders can, either directly (i.e., through stock-people interaction with the animals) or indirectly (e.g., when retailers and consumers are willing to pay more for high welfare animal-based products), affect the way animals are kept and handled.

NEW UPDATED EDITION! Renowned for their amazing athleticism and unparalleled work ethic, and famed for their “great heart” and willingness to go the extra mile, off-track Thoroughbreds (OTTBs) have proven to be the ultimate equine partners in a host of disciplines: dressage, eventing, show jumping, trail riding, and even barrel racing and ranch work. In this revised edition of the book that Thoroughbred and horse training experts have called “breakthrough racehorse literature,” “superior,” “a winner,” and “the ultimate in training manuals,” readers learn everything they need to transition an OTTB from life at the track to life out back. Author Anna Ford, Thoroughbred Program Director at New Vocations Racehorse Adoption, begins by discussing the typical Thoroughbred's early years, then explains reasons for retirement, common injuries and health issues, basic feeding and nutrition, and safe handling. Ford goes on to provide step-by-step instructions for building the solid educational foundation the OTTB needs to excel in a new career, whether as a highly trained competitor or a pleasure mount. With hundreds of quality, full-color photographs to illustrate conscientious and professionally tested training methods, case studies that share how other individuals have successfully retrained ex-racehorses, and the recommendations of top equestrians–including event riders, jockeys, horse trainers, and leading industry magazines–this book is the go-to reference for anyone interested in pursuing a partnership with a Thoroughbred athlete. -- Anna Morgan Ford

Miniature horses are becoming increasingly more popular as therapy animals in hospitals, nursing homes, and schools. Although many therapy horse training methods exist, which is the most effective? I propose to test whether clicker training is superior to training using praise and touch as a reward. Eight horses, paired by gender, will be randomly assigned to be either clicker trained or trained using praise and touch as a reward. A different task will be assigned each week for four consecutive weeks to each group. For each task, I will record the number of correct responses within a given time or length of time taken to complete the task correctly, depending on the task. I predict that the clicker-trained horses would learn faster, be more calm and confident, and look forward to training sessions. Indicating that the use of audible signals as secondary-reinforcers is a more effective and efficient training method. opt-out vs. an opt-in system and controlled financial payment for organs. Finally, I will analyze current policies regarding living donors and suggest avenues for future research into alternative resources for organs.
