Bestselling author James Lee Burke’s masterpiece is the story of a father and son separated by war, circumstance, and a race for the Holy Grail—a thrilling entry in the Holland family saga The New York Times Book Review has described as “saturated with the romance of the past while mournfully attuned to the unholy menace of the present.” After a violent encounter that leaves four Mexican soldiers dead, Texas Ranger Hackberry Holland escapes the country in possession of a stolen artifact believed to be the mythic cup of Christ, earning the ire of a bloodthirsty Austrian arms dealer who places Hack’s son, Ishmael, squarely in the cross hairs of a plot to recapture his prize. On the journey from revolutionary Mexico in 1918 to the saloons of San Antonio during the Hole in the Wall Gang’s reign, we meet three extraordinary women: the Danish immigrant who is Ishmael’s mother and Hackberry’s one true love; a brothel madam descended from the Crusader knight who brought the Shroud of Turin back from the Holy Land; and a onetime lover of the Sundance Kid, whose wiles rival those of Lady Macbeth. In her own way, each woman will aid Hack in his quest to reconcile with Ishmael, to vanquish their enemies, and to return the Grail to its rightful place.

"Kill you?" repeated Gabriel, looking quizzically at Friesen. "I believe the going rate for rubbing someone out is $5 grand. I'm prepared to write you a check for twice that amount," Friesen said, taking a sip of his coffee. "You're serious? You expect me to murder you?" Friesen nodded. "This is nuts," Gabriel got up from his chair. "I think you should leave." "Don't you want to hear why? I think you might change your mind." Gabriel made a show of looking at his Casio before shaking his head and sitting down. He reluctantly nodded for Friesen to continue. So begins a roller coaster ride involving crazed killers, civic corruption and the Russian Mafia.

Were you one of the elite who used to meet in The Rising Sun? Did you ever raise a jar in one of its bars? Many a football fan did. If you lived in the middle of the last century in London, in Chelsea or Fulham, you’d know the pub. It stood - stands - opposite the main gates of Chelsea Football Club at Stamford Bridge. Like much else in the neighbourhood it has changed hands, changed names, and probably changed sex since then. There’s little left of what it once was. Hitler had his eyes on it at one time, or so it seemed. Not to buy it or to run it, just to bomb it. He didn’t manage to destroy it though; he left that to the developers. For many of its customers the pub was a home from home. For others it was simply home. For one woman it was a private kingdom over which she ruled with a rod of kindness, though her reign began in bitter hatred. For others it was just a place of bitter, of brown ale, and stout and mild, of Scotch eggs and Muscado. What’s Muscado? Well might you ask. It was a kind of cola that acted like colonic irrigation on a kid whose favourite tipple it was. For some, The Rising Sun was a work place, for others it was a shelter, the centre of a community. For many, before and after the war, it was the ‘still point of the turning world’. The Muscado Kid, who was reared there, saw no point in it and couldn’t wait to get away. Then he got away and couldn’t wait to get back. Then many moons later, as the sun began to set, it dawned on him there was a story to be told. A story of Uncle Reg and ‘I’m here’; of Big Pat and Dodger Green; of mass murder in a church; of tin baths and a haunting nipple; of Janaway and ‘bit of bush’; of a selfless sister and an adored Mum; of Dur-Dur and the several Mickeys. This is that story. The pub that was The Rising Sun closed long ago. Now, once again, it’s opening time.

I put my convictions on the table, And if I am willing He is able. I had been hyper and couldn't sit still; Now, I needed to listen and allow Him to fill. Mainly at night, sometimes in tears, He would comfort and calm my many fears. I feel God, met me with arms open wide; The words, He gave me are written inside. Stanley Angerstein is a Christian carpenter from Victoria, Texas. His father owned a small grocery store in Bloomington, Texas where Stanley graduated from high school. He wasn't a very good student and English was his worst subject. After his wife left him more than twenty years ago he developed a bond with God through song. Knowing these words were given by God and had to be shared; he was convicted to develop this book of poems because God is so awesome.

A New Zealand Book of Beasts is a groundbreaking examination of the interactions between humans and 'nonhuman animals' - both real and imagined - in New Zealand's arts and literature, popular culture, historiography, media and everyday life. Structured in four parts - Animal Icons, Animal Companions, Art Animals and Controversial Animals - the Book of Beasts touches on topics as diverse as moa-hunting and the SPCA, pest-control and pet-keeping, whaling and whale-watching; on species ranging from sheep to sperm whales and from pekapeka to possums; and on the works of authors and artists as various as Samuel Butler and Witi Ihimaera, Lady Mary Anne Barker and Janet Frame, Michael Parekowhai and Don Binney, Bill Hammond and Fiona Pardington. In examining through literature, art and culture the ways New Zealanders use and abuse, shape and are shaped by, glorify and co-opt, and describe and imagine animals, the authors tell us a great deal about our society and culture: how we understand our own identities and those of others; how we regard, inhabit and make use of the natural world; and how we think about what to buy, eat, wear, watch and read. This is an engaging, original and scholarly rigorous book of cultural criticism and a thoughtful addition to New Zealand literature.
