This text records the dramatic new prospects for computers in instruction in school, the workplace and high technology research facilities. If offers teachers and trainers a vision of how their professions will be fundamentally altered by these new systems and how their roles will be changed. The challenges and opportunities exposed by these developments in intelligent instruction by computer are many. Topics discussed include: apprenticeship and training in the workplace; automated tutoring in interactive environment; two approaches to simulation composition for training; and transfer, adaption, and use of intelligent tutoring technology.

In the last decade there have been rapid developments in the field of computer-based learning environments. A whole new generation of computer-based learning environments has appeared, requiring new approaches to design and development. One main feature of current systems is that they distinguish different knowledge bases that are assumed to be necessary to support learning processes. Current computer-based learning environments often require explicit representations of large bodies of knowledge, including knowledge of instruction. This book focuses on instructional models as explicit, potentially implementable representations of knowledge concerning one or more aspects of instruction. The book has three parts, relating to different aspects of the knowledge that should be made explicit in instructional models: knowledge of instructional planning, knowledge of instructional strategies, and knowledge of instructional control. The book is based on a NATO Advanced Research Workshop held at the University of Twente, The Netherlands in July 1991.

This volume examines the proposal that studies of human teaching can be used to inform the design of intelligent computer tutors along with the reciprocal proposal that attempts to understand how teachers' knowledge and action can benefit from the models and methods of artificial intelligence and cognitive science. All of the contributors are directly involved in building Intelligent Tutoring Systems, carrying out empirical studies of teaching to help think about the design of ITSs, taking a cognitive stance in studying teaching, or using AI-based systems to help in teacher education.

This volume presents a theoretical framework and background for designing computer-assisted instruction (CAI). Its goal is to synthesize theoretical and applied research in CAI-relevant fields including theories of learning and instruction, systems for instructional design, and experience with CAI. Building on this knowledge, the book shows how computer technology interacts with instruction to influence the design of effective lessons. Designers, practitioners, and students of CAI and computer-based training (CBT) should find this text very helpful in developing a better understanding of the potential and limitations of computers as tutors.
