The third edition of Java Precisely provides a concise description of the Java programming language, version 8.0. It offers a quick reference for the reader who has already learned (or is learning) Java from a standard textbook and who wants to know the language in more detail. The book presents the entire Java programming language and essential parts of the class libraries: the collection classes, the input-output classes, the stream libraries and Java 8's facilities for parallel programming, and the functional interfaces used for that.Though written informally, the book describes the language in detail and offers many examples. For clarity, most of the general rules appear on left-hand pages with the relevant examples directly opposite on the right-hand pages. All examples are fragments of legal Java programs. The complete ready-to-run example programs are available on the book's website. This third edition adds material about functional parallel processing of arrays; default and static methods on interfaces; a brief description of the memory model and visibility across concurrent threads; lambda expressions, method reference expressions, and the related functional interfaces; and stream processing, including parallel programming and collectors.

Exploring the distinctive nature and role of local pilgrimage traditions among Muslims and Catholics, Muslim and Catholic Pilgrimage Practices draws particularly on south central Java, Indonesia. In this area, the hybrid local Muslim pilgrimage culture is shaped by traditional Islam, the Javano-Islamic sultanates, and the Javanese culture with its strong Hindu-Buddhist heritage. This region is also home to a vibrant Catholic community whose identity formation has occurred in a way that involves complex engagements with Islam as well as Javanese culture. In this respect, local pilgrimage tradition presents itself as a rich milieu in which these complex engagements have been taking place between Islam, Catholicism, and Javanese culture. Employing a comparative theological and phenomenological analysis, this book reveals the deeper religio-cultural and theological import of pilgrimage practice in the identity formation and interaction among Muslims and Catholics in south central Java. In a wider context, it also sheds light on the larger dynamics of the complex encounter between Islam, Christianity and local cultures.

The rise and fall of the Japanese empire constitutes one of the most dramatic episodes of modern history. Within the short span of fifty years Japan grew out of political backwardness into a position of tremendous power. Japan's rise to power challenged Europe's hegemony over Asia, but, paradoxically, it was Japan's fall that caused the irreparable ruin of the colonial system over Eastern lands. Japan went to war against the West under the battlecry of Asia's liberation from European colonialism. In reality, for forty years, beginning with her first war against China, she had striven to imitate this colonialism, as she had endeavoured to imitate the political, military and economic achievements of Europe. A thorough understanding of the imitative character of the Japanese Empire might well have induced the leaders of the nation to side with the conservative trend of political thought in the Western world in order to maintain the existing world-wide political system of which colonial rule was an accepted part. They might have understood that an adventurous, revolutionary policy was bound to result in grave dangers for their own state and most conservative structure. Japan might have continued to grow and to expand if she had succeeded to play the role of the legitimate heir to Europe's decaying power in Asia. By violently opposing that power, she undermined the very foun dations of her own rule outside the home-islands.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject History - Asia, grade: A, University of Airlangga, course: English Literature, language: English, abstract: ABSTRACT Zhis paper, through postcolonial-feminist criticism, attempts to prove the existence of the oppression toward the Javanese women during the Dutch’s colonialism in Indonesia. The analysis is focused to the character of Sanikem which is also known as Nyai Ontosoroh in Toer’s This Earth of Mankind. Firstly it aims to know whether there is a relation between the Dutch’s colonialism and the Javanese feudalism with the oppression towards Sanikem and then analyse how the dual hierarchy of the Dutch’s colonialism and Javanese’s feudal system contribute to the oppression. The second is to discover shifting of Sanikem’s personality which makes her aware of the oppression and struggle against it. And the last is to examine whether, under the oppression, Sanikem successfully voices her rights or whether her struggles results in vain. In conducting the analysis, cultural and historical background will be applied in the thesis along with the discussion of the subaltern women in a colonized country established by Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak. This research applies qualitative method which means that the data is taken from the novel itself which is This Earth of Mankind, both digital and non-digital library research, journals, and other resources which are appropriate in conducting the analysis.

The release of Java SE 8 introduced significant enhancements that impact the Core Java technologies and APIs at the heart of the Java platform. Many old Java idioms are no longer required and new features like lambda expressions will increase programmer productivity, but navigating these changes can be challenging. Core Java® for the Impatient is a complete but concise guide to Java SE 8. Written by Cay Horstmann—the author of Java SE 8 for the Really Impatient and Core Java™, the classic, two-volume introduction to the Java language—this indispensable new tutorial offers a faster, easier pathway for learning the language and libraries. Given the size of the language and the scope of the new features introduced in Java SE 8, there’s plenty of material to cover, but it’s presented in small chunks organized for quick access and easy understanding. If you’re an experienced programmer, Horstmann’s practical insights and sample code will help you quickly take advantage of lambda expressions (closures), streams, and other Java language and platform improvements. Horstmann covers everything developers need to know about modern Java, including Crisp and effective coverage of lambda expressions, enabling you to express actions with a concise syntax A thorough introduction to the new streams API, which makes working with data far more flexible and efficient A treatment of concurrent programming that encourages you to design your programs in terms of cooperating tasks instead of low-level threads and locks Up-to-date coverage of new libraries like Date and Time Other new features that will be especially valuable for server-side or mobile programmers Whether you are just getting started with modern Java or are an experienced developer, this guide will be invaluable for anyone who wants to write tomorrow’s most robust, efficient, and secure Java code.
