Figure skating has always had an important home in Lake Placid. Early on, the Sno Birds popularized this summer retreat, and Melville and Godfrey Dewey won the campaign for the 1932 Winter Olympics. The Skating Club of Lake Placid was formed, and after 1932, famous skaters trained here with legendary coach Gus Lussi. When Lake Placid again hosted the Olympics in 1980, skating dominated, with state-of-the-art facilities that have continued to be used by stars like Dorothy Hamill and Sarah Hughes, and helped give rise to Scott Hamilton's Stars on Ice. For more than one hundred years, the Lake Placid community has worked together to support figure skating and skaters in this quiet Adirondack village. Local expert Christie Sausa tells this exciting story.

On of the best-known areas of the Adirondacks is Lake Placid, a large lake and village located in the northeast corner of the great New York State park. Tourists started coming to Lake Placid in the early 1850s, when the only public accommodations available were a few rooms in a nearby farmhouse. Fifty years later, there were four major hotels and numerous smaller ones open to travelers and vacationers. Tourism had become the mainstay of the village economy. Just after 1900, winter sports gained prominence and, in 1932, the village hosted the third Winter Olympics. From then on, the community was considered to be the winter sports capital of North America. Lake Placid showcases more than two hundred thirty images dating from the mid-1870s to 1940. This fascinating visual history contains stunning views of the lake and the sports for which it is famous, including scenes from the 1932 Olympics. Also pictured are residents and visitors, streets and buildings, hotels and rustic camps, and the private Lake Placid Club.

It is called "the Olympic Village," and rightly so. In 1932, Lake Placid hosted the third Winter Olympics, and in 1980 it hosted the thirteenth Winter Olympics. Lake Placid has placed an athlete on all but one winter Olympic roster since 1924. This small community continually works to keep international winter sports on the calendar. First settled as a farming community in 1800, it was home to the famous Lake Placid Club from 1895 to 1980. Today it is known for its beautiful setting amid the Adirondack peaks of New York and for its diverse summer activities making it a year-round international resort.

For more than a century and a half, the town of North Elba has been one of the most visited places in the Adirondack region. Its proximity to the beautiful High Peaks region and Whiteface Mountain has made it a four-season vacation destination. North Elba and Whiteface Mountain contains more than two hundred rare photographs depicting the mountain, the village of Lake Placid, Mirror and Placid Lakes, Ray Brook, the Cascade Lakes, Pontiac Bay, and Wilmington Notch. Accompanied by detailed narrative, these historical views reveal the people, life, and events of the town from 1875 to 1950, among them Franklin Delano Roosevelt attending the Whiteface Mountain Memorial Highway opening in 1935.

E.L. Shen's The Comeback is a heartfelt, #OwnVoices middle-grade debut about a young girl trying to be a champ—in figure skating and in life. Twelve-year-old Maxine Chen is just trying to nail that perfect landing: on the ice, in middle school, and at home, where her parents worry that competitive skating is too much pressure for a budding tween. Maxine isn’t concerned, however—she’s determined to glide to victory. But then a bully at school starts teasing Maxine for her Chinese heritage, leaving her stunned and speechless. And at the rink, she finds herself up against a stellar new skater named Hollie, whose grace and skill threaten to edge Maxine out of the competition. With everything she knows on uneven ice, will Maxine crash under the pressure? Or can she power her way to a comeback? Set in Lake Placid, New York, this is a spunky yet stirring middle-grade story that examines racism, female rivalry and friendship, and the enduring and universal necessity of love and support.

In 'Japanese Women and Sport', Robin Kietlinski sets out to problematize the hegemonic image of the delicate Japanese woman, highlighting an overlooked area in the history of modern Japan. Previous studies of gender in the Japanese context do not explore the history of female participation in sport, and recent academic studies of women and sport tend to focus on Western countries. Kietlinski locates the discussion of Japanese women in sport within a larger East Asian context and considers the socio-economic position and history of modern Japan. Reaching from the early 20th century to the present day, Kietlinski traces the progression of Japanese women's participation in sport from the first female school for physical education and the foundations of competitive sport through to their growing presence in the Olympics and international sport.
