Melbourne teenager Grace Halphen had a tough time transitioning to high school – she struggled to make friends and fit in. When she realised this was a common experience, she wondered why she’d felt so alone. When she was 13, she embarked on a project to contact all the public figures she admires, and asked them to provide advice to help teenagers navigate the inevitable ups and downs of adolescence. In Letter to my Teenage Self, 50 prominent Australians write heartfelt letters to their younger selves, passing on the wisdom they wish they’d had at the time. From learning to laugh at yourself (Adam Gilchrist), realising that the qualities that make you stand out are the ones that makes you SO RAD (Missy Higgins), not letting the negative things that happen shape who you become (Guy Sebastian), practising gratitude (Nathan Buckley), and the reassurance that you’ll get over anger about people treating you badly because you’ll get better at treating yourself well (Judith Lucy), Letter to my Teenage Self provides inspiration and reassurance for parents and teenagers alike. Contributors include: Maggie Beer, Chris Judd, Judith Lucy, Matt Tilley, Jen Cloher, Jackie French, Julian McMahon, Missy Higgins, Nathan Buckley, Kate Cebrano, Josh Frydenberg, Sir Gus Nossal, Layne Beachley, Stephanie Rice, David Koch, Guy Sebastian, Alice Pung, Danni Minogue, Chet Faker, Shaun Tan, Richard Frankland, Lisa Mitchell, Mim and Liv Nervo, Jo Stanley, Peter Alexander All profits from the sale of this book go to the REACH FOUNDATION, helping all teenagers reach their full potential.

This book primarily focuses on the concept of forgetting, with particular emphasis on how we can trace the forgotten in contemporary life writing and memory texts. It consists of two main parts: the first concentrates on life writing in particular and what the author calls “scenes of forgetting”; the second examines both fiction and autobiographies that deal with questions of collective memory/forgetting. The book’s principal aim is to map methods and strategies writers employ when writing the forgotten – it argues that forgetting is a constant companion in any memory text and plays a decisive role in the memory work performed in the texts. The main theoretical objective is to examine carefully the connection between collective memory and personal memory, by drawing from two disciplines at once: memory studies and theories on life writing. By considering both areas of research, the conclusions of this study are able to feed into both theoretical perspectives.

In the summer of 1977, Terri Jentz and her Yale roommate, Shayna Weiss, make a cross-country bike trip. They pitch a tent in the desert of central Oregon. As they are sleeping, a man in a pickup truck deliberately runs over the tent. He then attacks them with an ax. The horrific crime is reported in newspapers across the country. No one is ever arrested. Both women survive, but Shayna suffers from amnesia, while Terri is left alone with memories of the attack. Their friendship is shattered. Fifteen years later, Terri returns to the small town where she was nearly murdered, on the first of many visits she will make "to solve the crime that would solve me." And she makes an extraordinary discovery: the violence of that night is as present for the community as it is for her. Slowly, her extensive interviews with the townspeople yield a terrifying revelation: many say they know who did it, and he is living freely in their midst. Terri then sets out to discover the truth about the crime and its aftermath, and to come to terms with the wounds that broke her life into a before and an after. Ultimately she finds herself face-to-face with the alleged axman. Powerful, eloquent, and paced like the most riveting of thrillers, Strange Piece of Paradise is the electrifying account of Terri's investigation into the mystery of her near murder. A startling profile of a psychopath, a sweeping reflection on violence and the myth of American individualism, and a moving record of a brave inner journey from violence to hope, this searing, unforgettable work is certain to be one of the most talked about books of the year.

Surviving the Scarlet Letter is a first-hand account of an affair. With honesty, Karen Melville Thacker invites you to peek into the rarely publicized emotions, thoughts, and actions of a woman as she walks through an adulterous encounter. The experience not only changes her life forever, but imprints upon her heart the realization that we are all incredibly fragile and in desperate need of both understanding and Gods healing grace. We tend to keep our dark parts hidden, but that approach does not lead to healing. Karen hopes that her vulnerability will help others in similar situations know that they are not alone. This book is not reserved solely for those affected by an affair, but anyone who feels shame as the result of choices made. This is a narrative that details the realities of life bathed in the grace of God.
