Managing Gigaprojects: Advice from Those Who?ve Been There, Done That reports from the leading edge of the world?s biggest infrastructure construction projects. Megaprojects, with costs of more than US$1 billion, are being surpassed by gigaprojects, with pricetags higher than US$10 billion. These super-size projects are critical to meeting the growing demands of global populations, yet they present daunting obstacles for effective planning, design, construction, and delivery. Not only do the challenges of enormous projects increase exponentially with their size, but these projects can span long time frames. Risk management alone poses unprecedented problems of scale and complexity. Galloway, Nielsen, and Dignum have assembled a stellar group of financiers, owners, program managers, consultants, designers, contractors, and legal counsel, all of whom have frontline experience with megaprojects and gigaprojects. In the first part, these experts share lessons learned and best practices developed as they grappled with specific difficulties posed such large-scale projects. In the second part, construction professionals describe projects undertaken in the Middle East, Brazil, Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America with a view to highlighting strategies that lead to success. Engineers, construction managers, planners, and risk managers will find in this volume useful tools for the effective and efficient execution of megaprojects and gigaprojects. Managing Gigaprojects is also an indispensable guide for investors, senior executives, board members, and other participants involved in these large-scale projects.

It will be useful for those experienced and senior professionals who are charged with authorizing and controlling projects. Recommended. P.F. Rad, Choice Building on the seminal work of Bent Flyvbjerg, this book is a collection of expert contributions that will prove essential to anyone wanting to understand why mega-projects go wrong and how they can be made to work better. Professor Sir Peter Hall, University College London, UK This book offers a refreshing and fascinating look at mega-projects from the perspective of public evaluation and planning. With the changing role of the public sector in planning and implementing large-scale projects and a subsequent strong emergence of private public modes of operation, mega-projects have become a problematic phenomenon. This volume is a major source of information and reference. It provides the reader with unique insights and caveats in mega-projects planning. Peter Nijkamp, VU University Amsterdam, The Netherlands This book enlarges the understanding of decision-making on mega-projects and suggest recommendations for a more effective, efficient and democratic approach. Authors from different scientific disciplines address various aspects of the decision-making process, such as management characteristics and cost benefit analysis, planning and innovation and competition and institutions. The subject matter is highly diverse, but certain questions remain at the forefront. For example, how do we deal with protracted preparation processes, how do we tackle risks and uncertainties, and how can we best divide the risks and responsibilities among the private and public players throughout the different phases of the project? Presenting a state-of-the-art overview, based on experiences and visions of authors from Europe and North America, this unique book will be of interest to practitioners of large-scale project management, politicians, public officials and private organisations involved in mega-project decision-making. It will also appeal to researchers, consultants and students dealing with substantial engineering projects, complex systems, project management and transport infrastructure.

Since the demise of urban renewal in the early 1970s, the politics of large-scale public investment in urban areas has received little scholarly attention. In Mega-Projects, Alan A. Altshuler and David E. Luberoff examine the forces that gave rise to a great wave of urban mega-projects in the 1950s and 1960s, that broke this wave in the years around 1970, and that have shaped a new generation of such projects in the decades since. While focusing principally on transportation mega-projects such as Boston's Central Artery/Tunnel project (the “Big Dig”), Denver International Airport, and the Los Angeles subway, they consider as well the scores of new stadiums, arenas, and convention centers built (mainly at public expense) in recent years.Mega-Projects includes rich narratives of both national policymaking and local mobilization to bring about highway, airport, rail-transit, and downtown revitalization projects, particularly since the 1970s. The specific projects chronicled are drawn from numerous regions including Boston, Denver, Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, Portland, and Seattle. It also includes broad analyses, seeking to place the authors' findings in relation to leading theories of urban and American politics, and to appraise the most important practical consequences of policy shifts in this arena over the past half-century. In a concluding chapter, the authors examine post-September 11 developments and the potential effects of both new fiscal pressures and security concerns on the future of urban mega-projects.Alan A. Altshuler is the Frank and Ruth Stanton Professor of Urban Policy at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government and its Graduate School of Design. He is also director of the Kennedy School's A. Alfred Taubman Center for State and Local Government. David E. Luberoff is associate director of the A. Alfred Taubman Center for State and Local Government and an adjunct lecturer at the Kennedy School of Government

Professional Project Management (PM), with its well-defined concepts and tools, is now well established and can be used in the world at large. But wherever PM is utilized old problems invariably recur and new problems arise. It is this consideration which forms the main theme of this volume. The book tackles questions such as: - are the currently available computerized planning tools user-friendly enough for average people to use them effectively ? - where does one find and develop the ideal project manager ? - how can behaviour of people involved in projects be successfully predicted ? In addition, attention is paid to new, emerging issues such as PM in the Developing Countries; the application of PM to the many non-technological processes of change in governmental and private organizations; cooperation, training and follow-up in smaller projects. Also discussed is the practical experience gained from successes and failures in actual projects. The challenge for the nineties is to meet the growing need for well-trained project managers. This volume is the international resource which aims to meet this challenge by providing a broad overview of the many facets of PM.
