In 1955, Mercedes-Benz wins the sports car world championship with the racing car 300 SLR (W 196 S). In addition to the titles achieved that same year in the formula 1 world championship and the European touring car championship, this success is proof of the unprecedented dominance of a single manufacturer on the stage of international automobile racing. Stirling Moss and Juan Manuel Fangio, the most successful drivers of their era, celebrate impressive double victories in the 300 SLR at the most demanding road races in the world, triumphs that continue to afford this unparalleled racing car lasting fame to this day. Based on extensive research in the archives of Mercedes-Benz Classic, this book provides exhaustive and authentic documentation of the technical development of the W 196 S. All of the races as well as the biography of each individual vehicle are presented with the aid of images and illustrations, some of which have never before been published. Its high-quality design and exquisite features make the book a true collector's item. (German edition ISBN 978-3-7757-4000-5)

It proved successful, winning the 1952 Le Mans 24-hour race, the Carrera PanAmericana and many other events. The production model made its sensational debut in 1954. 1,400 Gullwing coupes were built between 1954 and 1957. The contents of this book provide a glorious review of these historic Mercedes-Benz sports cars.

Juan Manuel Fangio's name is indelibly inscribed in the record books and many consider him to be the greatest driver in history. It was 46 years before his record of five World Championships was beaten, but even now he is still remembered for an exceptional Formula 1 career which contained some of the greatest displays of skill and daring ever seen. Few though know of his almost super-human exploits in epic South American road races that made competition at the pinnacle of motor sport seem like child's play. Gerald Donaldson chronicles not only those arduous early competitions but also his long journey from humble origins in remote Argentina to the lofty heights of international celebrity.

EJ ‘Ted’ Cutting was not only Aston Martin’s most successful Chief Race Car Design Engineer, but was also an innovator with influential force on the worldwide automotive industry. Originating from a limited edition hardback version, this eBook was produced in celebration of the 60th anniversary of Aston Martin winning the World Sports Car Championship for Britain with the all-conquering DBR1 designed, engineered and created by Ted himself. Rather than a traditional biography of his life, Ted wanted his book to be rather less scripted and informal; it was therefore initially adapted from a number of recorded conversations between himself and Aston Martin Heritage Trust members Stuart Bailey and Brian Joscelyne - the title being an obvious choice considering this! In addition to the in-depth telling of a legendary period in British motorsport by a man at the centre of it all, the book also sees Ted clarify a number of details which have in the past been incorrectly reported. Unusually it also contains all his published documents and access to a 90 minute video of his unique lecture on ‘Racing Astons’ to further endorse his story. Although the original hardback edition of this book was produced only in a limited run, Ted’s wish was to make the complete book available to a much wider audience, now possible through the internet; as an engineer always working at the cutting edge of technology, he would appreciate the benefits of information sharing in the digital age. As well as being of interest to fans of Aston Martin and of motorsports in general, the book is a compelling read for any student of automotive design and engineering; after all, progress is about standing on the shoulders of giants - and in the field of race car design, few individuals ever reach the colossal heights achieved by Ted Cutting.

Most car collectors exhibit a healthy enthusiasm for their favorite hobby with a tendency to dig into their favorite marques, chase parts, swap stories, and generally live the car-guy lifestyle. Some, however, step over that fine line between enthusiasm and obsession--and that’s the dusty place where these legendary car-collector stories come from. In Strange but True Tales of Car Collecting, Keith Martin and the staff of Sports Car Market Magazine recount the wildest car-collecting stories of all time. You will be blown away by these eccentric and over-the-top stories of collectors, and their collections. Have you heard of the fellow who squirrelled away dozens of Chevelles, Camaros, and other classic muscle cars in semi-trailers? How about the president of Shakespeare fishing rods who sold 30 Bugattis for a mere $85,000? What about the English nobleman who cut up and buried his Ferrari horde in an elaborate insurance scam? Or how about the Duesenberg abandoned in a Manhattan parking garage for decades only to be uncovered by Jay Leno? They only get crazier from there.

Born 1906 in London as the son of an English mother and a German father, Rudolf Uhlenhaut was an engineer and designer for Daimler-Benz. He became famous for his achievements regarding the Silver Arrows, the 300 SL with the famous gull wing doors, the legendary Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR, known as the?Uhlenhaut Coupé? and the various experimental C 111 versions well-known for several speed records. -- Uhlenhaut joined Daimler-Benz in 1931 after finishing his studies of mechanical engineering in Munich. In 1936 he took over as head of the racing department and conducted the Silver Arrows and Rudolf Caracciola to their 1937 European championship. Based upon the 300 SL?Gullwing?, initially a thoroughbred racing sports car, he created the road versions W198 and the smaller open-topped W121, both launched at the International Motor Sports Show in New York 1954. Though Uhlenhaut never owned a car of his own, his official company car, a 300 SLR with a top speed of 290 km/h became famous as the Uhlenhaut Coupé? the fastest car of its day authorized for road use! -- This first ever comprehensive biography of Rudolf Uhlenhaut, illustrated with many previously unpublished photographs, depicts his life and technical achievements, presenting a complete compilation of all the patents he filed and exploring their significance. It also draws a vivid picture of the person behind the technical innovations and tries to explore his character and motivation.
