This book develops a new theory of multi-parameter singular integrals associated with Carnot-Carathéodory balls. Brian Street first details the classical theory of Calderón-Zygmund singular integrals and applications to linear partial differential equations. He then outlines the theory of multi-parameter Carnot-Carathéodory geometry, where the main tool is a quantitative version of the classical theorem of Frobenius. Street then gives several examples of multi-parameter singular integrals arising naturally in various problems. The final chapter of the book develops a general theory of singular integrals that generalizes and unifies these examples. This is one of the first general theories of multi-parameter singular integrals that goes beyond the product theory of singular integrals and their analogs. Multi-parameter Singular Integrals will interest graduate students and researchers working in singular integrals and related fields.

The authors study algebras of singular integral operators on R and nilpotent Lie groups that arise when considering the composition of Calderón-Zygmund operators with different homogeneities, such as operators occuring in sub-elliptic problems and those arising in elliptic problems. These algebras are characterized in a number of different but equivalent ways: in terms of kernel estimates and cancellation conditions, in terms of estimates of the symbol, and in terms of decompositions into dyadic sums of dilates of bump functions. The resulting operators are pseudo-local and bounded on for . . While the usual class of Calderón-Zygmund operators is invariant under a one-parameter family of dilations, the operators studied here fall outside this class, and reflect a multi-parameter structure.

Over the last two years, wavelet methods have shown themselves to be of considerable use to harmonic analysts and, in particular, advances have been made concerning their applications. The strength of wavelet methods lies in their ability to describe local phenomena more accurately than a traditional expansion in sines and cosines can. Thus, wavelets are ideal in many fields where an approach to transient behaviour is needed, for example, in considering acoustic or seismic signals, or in image processing. Yves Meyer stands the theory of wavelets firmly upon solid ground by basing his book on the fundamental work of Calderón, Zygmund and their collaborators. For anyone who would like an introduction to wavelets, this book will prove to be a necessary purchase.

Based on seven lecture series given by leading experts at a summer school at Peking University, in Beijing, in 1984. this book surveys recent developments in the areas of harmonic analysis most closely related to the theory of singular integrals, real-variable methods, and applications to several complex variables and partial differential equations. The different lecture series are closely interrelated; each contains a substantial amount of background material, as well as new results not previously published. The contributors to the volume are R. R. Coifman and Yves Meyer, Robert Fcfferman, Carlos K. Kenig, Steven G. Krantz, Alexander Nagel, E. M. Stein, and Stephen Wainger.

This volume grew out of the preparation and achievements of the Symposium organized by the Luxembourg Mathematical Society in June 1992, at Chateau Bourglinster (Luxembourg). We express our best thanks to Monsieur Marc Fischbach, ministre de I 'Education nationale, Luxembourg Monsieur Rene Steichen, ministre delegue aux Affaires culturelles, Luxem bourg, Academie des sciences, Paris, Academie roya1e des sciences, des lettres et des beaux-arts de Belgique, Section des sciences de l'Institut grand-ducal, Luxembourg, and all lecturers and participants. We hope that this contribution may ease a better understanding of the vitality in mathematics during the first half of the present century and provide clues for the explanation of its influence on later developments. We say our gratitude to persons who assisted us with their advice and help for the technical realization of the volume, especially Mrs. Suzanne D' Addato-Mues, Mr. Fran~ois Gaillard, Mr. Hubert Glesener. We are also grateful to Birkhauser Verlag for having accepted this publication. Now the book should speak for itself ...
