The best-selling author of Born to Run now travels to the Mediterranean, where he discovers that the secrets of ancient Greek heroes are still alive and well on the island of Crete, and ready to be unleashed in the muscles and minds of casual athletes and aspiring heroes everywhere. After running an ultramarathon through the Copper Canyons of Mexico, Christopher McDougall finds his next great adventure on the razor-sharp mountains of Crete, where a band of Resistance fighters in World War II plotted the daring abduction of a German general from the heart of the Nazi occupation. How did a penniless artist, a young shepherd, and a playboy poet believe they could carry out such a remarkable feat of strength and endurance, smuggling the general past thousands of Nazi pursuers, with little more than their own wits and courage to guide them? McDougall makes his way to the island to find the answer and retrace their steps, experiencing firsthand the extreme physical challenges the Resistance fighters and their local allies faced. On Crete, the birthplace of the classical Greek heroism that spawned the likes of Herakles and Odysseus, McDougall discovers the tools of the hero—natural movement, extraordinary endurance, and efficient nutrition. All of these skills, McDougall learns, are still practiced in far-flung pockets throughout the world today. More than a mystery of remarkable people and cunning schemes, Natural Born Heroes is a fascinating investigation into the lost art of the hero, taking us from the streets of London at midnight to the beaches of Brazil at dawn, from the mountains of Colorado to McDougall’s own backyard in Pennsylvania, all places where modern-day athletes are honing ancient skills so they’re ready for anything. Just as Born to Run inspired readers to get off the treadmill, out of their shoes, and into the natural world, Natural Born Heroes will inspire them to leave the gym and take their fitness routine to nature—to climb, swim, skip, throw, and jump their way to their own heroic feats. From the Hardcover edition.

Randy Couture -- voted "The Greatest Fighter of All Time" by viewers' choice -- recounts his record-breaking career, which has made him an undisputed UFC legend. Randy Couture wins fights with the seemingly effortless ease with which lesser mortals eat or breathe. He's the only athlete to have held championship titles in both the heavyweight and light heavyweight divisions of the UFC, and he's the only six-time title earner in UFC history. In Becoming the Natural, Couture tells his story for the first time, beginning with a childhood spent in search of an elusive father figure, followed by the pure adrenaline rush that accompanied his first wrestling bout in grade school. In 1997, at the age of thirty-three, Couture made his UFC debut, defeating two opponents in the heavyweight class and then scoring a TKO victory against Brazilian phenom Vitor Belfort to earn the nickname "The Natural." He won his first heavyweight title that same year. At the age of forty, he defeated five-time defending champion Tito Ortiz for the undisputed light heavyweight title. Couture retired in 2006, only to reemerge the following year and seize the heavyweight championship title once again. Becoming the Natural is the remarkable story of one of the world's most gifted and dedicated athletes -- a born fighter whose skill and showmanship have helped to lift mixed martial arts out of the shadows and into the mainstream.

' "Did you see the big fight this weekend'" The question used to be about boxing matches, when the giants of the fight world were Mike Tyson and Roy Jones. Now fans are leaving the sweet science in droves for the combat sport of the future: mixed martial arts (MMA). MMA has drawn millions on cable and network television, as well as out-performed professional wrestling and boxing on pay-per-view. Fans are attracted to the sport, but unlike boxing (where strategy and technique are limited to using both your left and right hands), an MMA fight can be surprisingly complicated. The MMA Encyclopedia puts the fighters, the facts, and the fundamentals of the world's fastest growing sport at your fingertips as the definitive reference guide to mixed martial arts. The encyclopedia will break the MMA language barrier for those who don't know a wristlock from a wristwatch, while at the same time offering perspective and analysis that will entertain the hardcore fan who already has the basics down pat. With three appendices that detail the results of every MMA'fight in history, this the ultimate reference book for the ultimate sport.

Excerpt: Alex Reid (born Alexander Aristides Reid on 21 July 1975) is an English mixed martial artist, kickboxer and actor who sometimes is known by the nickname, "The Reidernator." Throughout his MMA career, Reid has fought some of the most well known fighters, especially from the earlier days of the UFC, including former welterweight champion Dave Menne and UFC 14 middleweight finalist Tony Fryklund. Reid has participated in mixed martial arts promotions Cage Rage, BAMMA and UCMMA. However, his celebrity significantly increased in Britain when he began to date the glamour model Katie Price in 2009. He then won Celebrity Big Brother in January 2010. His February 2010 marriage to Price and January 2011 separation from her brought additional attention to Reid. Alex Reid was born Alexander Aristides Reid on 21 July 1975 in Aldershot, Hampshire to Bob and Carol Reid. When he was 14, Reid began studying martial arts and subsequently focused on mixed martial arts, noting: "It was just a natural progression. I started off doing kung fu, karate-style tournaments before moving on to boxing, kickboxing, a little bit of judo, and jiu-jitsu. Mixed martial arts is just the most efficient and effective blend of martial arts." In 1996 when he was 21, Reid enlisted with 10th (Volunteer) Battalion of the Parachute Regiment (10 PARA), a Territorial Army unit based in London. In 1998 Reid studied on the one-year acting course at the Guildford School of Acting, in Surrey. Along with his mixed martial...

10-Second Feelings - See it- Feel it- Breathe it- Write it The idea behind 10-Second Feelings was to mimic a philosophy that has resonated through Samurai warriors, philosophers, deep thinkers and athletes for literally thousands of years. The basic concept is to be able to control your emotions - whether they are good or bad - in the space of 10 seconds. I prepared some very interesting research that helps to support this concept. I have provided a variety of breathing techniques that will help you gain your mental focus in a very short period of time. I want you to imagine yourself standing at the side of a river. To your left the river disappears into a forest. The river stretches across the horizon in front of you, continuing to your right, off into the forest. It's a calm and serene day. The water is flowing peacefully by from your left side to your right. In the water you notice pieces of floating wood of various sizes. There are little pieces, and large pieces. Some of them are bright, while others are dark and stained. No matter which color they are, though, they continue to float on by. If you close your eyes for just 10 seconds and open them, the river will not look the same. Every few seconds you can look up and see a completely different river in front of you with a different collection of wood bits just floating on by. The wood that was floating in front of you a few seconds ago is gone, no longer a part of your reality. In a few days, who knows, the wood might have made it to the ocean, or be sitting on the floor of the river. The one certainty is that the river keeps flowing and the wood appears on your left, and disappears on your right. Now imagine each of those pieces of wood floating by you as your emotions relating to the various ups and downs we all experience during the day. You're standing at the edge of the riverbank, as the water crosses from left to right, your emotions float on by. The river never stops flowing. Your emotions never stop. They're not permanent. They don't define the river. They're just momentarily here. The river is Time. It's continuous from left to right, always ticking and moving. Time never stops. The river never stops flowing by. The water that you see right now will be thousands of miles away by this time tomorrow. The bits and pieces of wood in the water that float by are your emotions coming and going in an orderly (natural) process. To focus too long on any one piece of wood (any one emotion or situation) starts to create a damn (impasse) in your ability to tackle oncoming issues. The more you dwell on any one piece of wood, the more they stack and gather up behind, creating an emotional logjam. If you're not careful, pretty soon all of the wood in the river has gummed up and nothing is passing by. The river water (time) keeps flowing by, but the wood (emotions) is going nowhere. Your ability or inability to let emotions (good or bad) come and go quickly can define your current emotional happiness or discontent. Enjoying a moment too long is just as dangerous as feeling sad. You have to let go of your emotions because they aren't real. Feelings and emotions are a side effect of circumstances that occur in your life. Some of these circumstances are within your control to change and affect, but most of them are not. We are human. We are born and we learn both from nurturing and from nature. We get guidance on how we should act and feel from those around us. We also learn from trial and error as we make decisions. The physical actions that take place, and their repercussions are real. But our emotions related to those physical actions are not. Emotions are lies in a sense because they affect our physical existence, and that's not rational. Let's make a change, right now.
