Creative, thought provoking and frequently humorous, this book offers you the chance to laugh, smile and sing your way through the NLP world. Created with the NLP learner in mind, it is neither an explanatory text nor a transcript. It is a series of twenty original stories and ten rap songs combining to provide a unique and entertaining approach to illustrating and teaching NLP. Most major topics within NLP are covered, including rapport, outcomes, anchoring, linguistics and presuppositions. A series of chapters, written as e-mail correspondence between two women, exemplify several change techniques. The light, metaphorical touch of the author belies the technical excellence and density of the content. He uses his skills as an NLP trainer and his empathetic understanding of the human condition to provide the reader with an unparalleled experience. Each story and song can be read in isolation and each has many informative messages for the NLP student. Equally, the stories in the book can be enjoyed and appreciated by those with little or no NLP background. The characters and storytellers in the book include - dogs, gods, vegetables, computers, coaches, therapists, men and women on their various journeys and, of course, the occasional unicorn. This book is destined to be the necessary companion to all NLP journeys. It will make you smile.

The literary imagination may take flight on the wings of metaphor, but hard-headed scientists are just as likely as doe-eyed poets to reach for a metaphor when the descriptive need arises. Metaphor is a pervasive aspect of every genre of text and every register of speech, and is as useful for describing the inner workings of a "black hole" (itself a metaphor) as it is the affairs of the human heart. The ubiquity of metaphor in natural language thus poses a significant challenge for Natural Language Processing (NLP) systems and their builders, who cannot afford to wait until the problems of literal language have been solved before turning their attention to figurative phenomena. This book offers a comprehensive approach to the computational treatment of metaphor and its figurative brethren—including simile, analogy, and conceptual blending—that does not shy away from their important cognitive and philosophical dimensions. Veale, Shutova, and Beigman Klebanov approach metaphor from multiple computational perspectives, providing coverage of both symbolic and statistical approaches to interpretation and paraphrase generation, while also considering key contributions from philosophy on what constitutes the "meaning" of a metaphor. This book also surveys available metaphor corpora and discusses protocols for metaphor annotation. Any reader with an interest in metaphor, from beginning researchers to seasoned scholars, will find this book to be an invaluable guide to what is a fascinating linguistic phenomenon.

The concept of natural language processing has become one of the preferred methods to better understand consumers, especially in recent years when digital technologies and research methods have developed exponentially. It has become apparent that when responding to international consumers through multiple platforms and speaking in the same language in which the consumers express themselves, companies are improving their standings within the public sphere. Natural Language Processing for Global and Local Business provides research exploring the theoretical and practical phenomenon of natural language processing through different languages and platforms in terms of today's conditions. Featuring coverage on a broad range of topics such as computational linguistics, information engineering, and translation technology, this book is ideally designed for IT specialists, academics, researchers, students, and business professionals seeking current research on improving and understanding the consumer experience.

AAAI proceedings describe innovative concepts, techniques, perspectives, and observations that present promising research directions in artificial intelligence. The focus of the AAAI-92 conference is on the re integration of AI as a diverse but coherent whole. Accordingly the traditional list of community-based content areas has been replaced by a more neutral set of taxonomies that span the field. For example, a paper proposing a new epistemology for representing the physical world based on an analysis of human brain structure would be described as "representation, physical world, biological." The papers collected here represent significant research contributions to such areas as the principles underlying cognition, perception, and action in man and machine; the design, application, and evaluation of AI algorithms and systems; and the analysis of domains in which AI systems perform.

Metaphor is a conventional and ordinary part of language. A theory attempting to explain metaphor must acount for the ease with which conventional metaphors are understood, and with the ability to understand novel metaphors as they are encountered. An approach to metaphor, based on the explicit representation of knowledge about metaphors, has been deeloped to address these issues. This approach asserts that the interpretation of conventional metaphoric language should proceed through the direct application of specific knowledge about the metaphors in the language. Corespondingly, the interpretation of novel metaphors can be accomplished through the systematic extension, elaboration, and combination of knowledge about already well-understood metaphors. MIDAS (Metaphor Interpretation, Denotation and Acquisition System) is a computer program that embodies this approach. MIDAS can be used to perform the following tasks: represent knowledge about conventional metaphors, interpret metaphoric language by applying this knowledge, and dynamicallly learn new metaphors as they are encountered during normal processing. Knowledge about conventional metaphors is represented in the form of coherent sets of associations between disparate conceptual domains. the representation captures both the details of individual metaphors, and the systematicities exhibited by the set of metaphors in the language as a whole. These systematic sets of associations were implemented using the KODIAK knowledge representation language. MIDAS is capable of using this metphoric knowledge to interpret conventional metaphoric language. The main thrust of this approach is that normal processing of metaphoric language proceeds through the direct application of specific knowledge about the metaphors in the language. This approach gives equal status to all conventional metaphoric and literal interpretations. Moreover, the mechanisms used to arrive at metaphoric and literal interpretations are fundamentally the same. When a meaphor is encountered for which MIDAS has no applicable knowledge, MIDAS calls pon its learning component - the Metaphor Extension System (MES). The approach embodies in the MES asserts that a novel metaphor can best be understood through the systematic extenion of an already wel-understood metaphor. MIDAS has been integrated as a part of the UNIX Consultant system. UC is a natural language consultant system that provides naive computer users with advice on how to use the UNIX operating system. By calling MIDAS, UC can successfully interpret and learn conventional UNIX domain metaphors, as they are encountered during the course of UC's normal processing.

The computational approach of this book is aimed at simulating the human ability to understand various kinds of phrases with a novel metaphoric component. That is, interpretations of metaphor as literal paraphrases are based on literal meanings of the metaphorically used words. This method distinguishes itself from statistical approaches, which in general do not account for novel usages, and from efforts directed at metaphor constrained to one type of phrase or to a single topic domain. The more interesting and novel metaphors appear to be based on concepts generally represented as nouns, since such concepts can be understood from a variety of perspectives. The core of the process of interpreting nominal concepts is to represent them in such a way that readers or hearers can infer which aspect(s) of the nominal concept is likely to be intended to be applied to its interpretation. These aspects are defined in terms of verbal and adjectival predicates. A section on the representation and processing of part-sentence verbal metaphor will therefore also serve as preparation for the representation of salient aspects of metaphorically used nouns. As the ability to process metaphorically used verbs and nouns facilitates the interpretation of more complex tropes, computational analysis of two other kinds of metaphorically based expressions are outlined: metaphoric compound nouns, such as "idea factory" and, together with the representation of inferences, modified metaphoric idioms, such as "Put the cat back into the bag".
