Olympic Aspirations: Realised and Unrealised surveys more than a century of the Olympic Movement’s promotion of Olympic ideals internationally. The idea for Olympic Aspirations emerged at the world-renowned annual Beijing Academic Forum just months after the city hosted the impressive 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. One section of the Forum was devoted to the impact of the Olympic Movement on China and on China’s image in the world. The tone at times was too self-congratulatory for some present. The critical discussion that continued into late 2010 inspired this book. Olympic Aspirations is a companion volume to the well-received Olympic Legacies: Intended and Unintended and draws on expertise from academics in all parts of the world. Both volumes have a similar purpose: to record Olympic ideals achieved but more importantly, to stimulate reflection on those as yet unachieved. Both are constructive in approach, positive in tone and optimistic in attitude. Olympic Aspirations offers original and insightful arguments that address the actions the Olympic Movement has taken to improve the Games. It argues that these actions are as yet incomplete. In concert with Olympic Legacies, it presents two sides of the same coin minted to advance the purity of the Olympic 'coinage'. This book was originally published as a special issue of the International Journal of the History of Sport.

During a television interview on 6 November 2014, the French President, François Hollande, said that he was in favour of Paris submitting a bid to host the Olympic Games in 2024. Everyone who supports the project and recognizes its importance for France welcomed his statement. However, gathering support and submitting a bid are not the same thing. For a bid to be convincing and credible, it must be endorsed and underwritten by three parties: the French National Olympic Committee (CNOSF), the mayor of Paris and the French government. Furthermore, the bidding process must obey a precise timetable – the International Olympic Committee has to receive the bid by September 2015 at the latest and will select the host city in the summer of 2017. Armand de Rendinger, an international expert and a keen observer of all matters Olympic, has written a new book "La tentation olympique française, Les secrets d'une décision' which was published by Editions France-Empire on 16 October 2014. The book's release was extremely timely and it has been well received both in France and abroad. De Rendinger introduces us to the impenetrable and complex world of the Olympic decision-makers. More importantly he addresses all the issues that have been – and still are – the subject of lively debate in France. He asks whether France has learned the lessons from five failed bids to host the Olympic Games over the past 30 years. Does it have the capacity and the resources to land the 2024 Games in the face of such intense competition? And, finally, given present circumstances, can the French population be persuaded to give the project its full support even though there is no guarantee of success? The USA (Boston), Italy (Rome) and Germany (Berlin or Hamburg) have already thrown their hats into the ring and are declared candidates for the 2024 Games. France is still hesitating and keeps putting off a decision. The sports world is in favour, but French politicians divided. The findings of the feasibility study on bringing back the Games to the French capital were presented on 12 February 2015. Even though its conclusions are moot, the mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, has announced that she will only make a final decision in April or May of this year. At a time when France is still very hesitant about whether to bid, Armand de Rendinger's new book reminds us that the competition and the whole of the international Olympic movement is watching and weighing France's every move. The book has been translated into English by Katia and Peter Sand and is published under the title: France's Olympic Aspirations, Reality or Pipe Dream ?

The 1976 Summer Olympics were the most riveting Games the world had ever seen, but planning efforts in Montreal were complicated by a wilful mayor, an inexperienced head of the IOC, a federal government that stayed at arm's length, and a provincial government split along federalist/separatist lines.

It is said the champions of the ancient Olympic Games received a crown of olive leaves, symbolizing a divine blessing from Nike, the winged goddess of victory. While the mythology of the ancient games has come to exemplify the highest political, religious, community, and individual ideals of the time, the modern Olympic Games, by comparison, are widely known as an international, bi-annual sporting event where champions have the potential to earn not only glory for their country, but lucrative endorsement deals and the perks of worldwide fame. The Olympics and Philosophy examines the Olympic Movement from a variety of theoretical perspectives to uncover the connection between athleticism and philosophy for a deeper appreciation of the Olympic Pillars of Sport, Environment, and Culture. While today's Olympic champions are neither blessed by the gods nor rewarded with wreaths of olive, the original spirit and ancient ideals of the Olympic Movement endure in its modern embodiment. Editors Heather L. Reid and Michael W. Austin have assembled a team of international scholars to explore topics such as the concept of excellence, ethics, doping, gender, and race. Interweaving ancient and modern Olympic traditions, The Olympics and Philosophy considers the philosophical implications of the Games' intersection with historical events and modern controversy in a unique analysis of tradition and the future of the Olympiad.

This book provides an in-depth examination of gender, sport and sexualities, an analysis of the limitations of liberal feminist responses, and an exploration of radical feminist alternatives. Dr. Lenskyj presents illuminating case studies from Canada, the United States and Australia, which exposes coaches' and administrators' complicity in perpetuating the chilly climate for female athletes in general, and for lesbians in particular. It includes a content analysis of the mass media treatment of sportswomen, and a discussion of how lesbian characters are portrayed in mainstream and lesbian fiction. Drawing on historical and contemporary examples, Dr. Lenskyj contextualizes the homophobia and sexual harassment present in the everyday experiences of significant numbers of women involved in sport and physical activity. She shows that despite three decades of feminist and lesbian activism, and despite the apparent liberalization of attitudes since the 1960s, lesbian sexuality remains largely in the closet while heterosexuality continues to be exploited in the name of selling sport.
