Includes the plays A Bitter Herb, Absolution, Identity, The Far Side, Mary Seacole, and Urban Afro-Saxons This second and sister volume to Hidden Gems showcases a further range of plays by Black British writers whose work reaches beyond themes too-often perceived by mainstream theatre commissioning as defining Black people's experiences. The plays, monodrama and libretto represent subject-matter from woman-centred history, revolutionary politics, trans-racial adoption and African-diasporic familial heritage, as contoured by the writers' boundary crossing profiles as poets, playwrights, performers and directors. The accompanying critical introductions are provided by people committed to recognising the aesthetic and political significance of the work, and its necessary inclusion in British theatre and literary history.

Example in this ebook PART I THE NATIONAL OUTLOOK Mr. PUNCH'S HISTORY OF MODERN ENGLAND THE AGE OF NON-INTERVENTION "Whether splendidly isolated or dangerously isolated, I will not now debate; but for my part I think splendidly isolated, because this isolation of England comes from her superiority." These words were used by Sir Wilfrid Laurier in 1896, but they were prompted by a retrospect of the Victorian age, and may serve as a motto for the policy which governed England in her relations with foreign countries in the period surveyed in this volume. There was serious friction with France in the early days of the Empire owing to the distrust of the Emperor's warlike preparations and his manipulation of the opportunities presented by his assistance of Italy in 1859. In the war of North and South in America, England as a whole "backed the wrong horse," and English diplomacy mishandled the obligations of our neutrality. We were on the verge of war over the Trent case, and the slackness of the Government in failing to detain the Alabama burdened the country with a costly legacy of moral and intellectual damage—to say nothing of pecuniary loss. Popular sentiment was strongly anti-Prussian in the war on Denmark in 1864; misgivings of Prussian aggression were heightened by the crushing defeat of Austria in 1866 and the French débâcle in 1870. Yet the old diplomacy, whatever its shortcomings, kept us out of European wars. The Court as well as the Government strove hard for peace in 1859; the Queen's influence was successfully exerted to prevent interference on behalf of Denmark in 1864, which had been foreshadowed in a menacing message to Austria from Lord Palmerston. After the defeat of the Austrians at Sadowa in 1866, Disraeli justified abstention from unnecessary interference in European politics, on the ground that England had outgrown the European Continent, and was really more of an Asiatic than a European power. With Gladstone the restraining motive was economic rather than anti-imperialist, though his distrust of a "spirited foreign policy" became more pronounced in later years. But under Liberals and Conservatives alike, non-intervention in European wars remained the unbroken rule, and the only serious military operations undertaken between 1857 and 1874 were those involved in the suppression of a great revolt within our own dominions. The Chinese quarrel was the only cloud on the horizon in the beginning of 1857. Parliament was dissolved as the result of the vote of censure passed in the Commons, but Palmerston was returned with a strong majority, and the pacificists under Cobden lost their seats, Punch expressing the hope that Cobden might be "master of himself though China fall." The war with China was not a glorious page in our annals: it remained in abeyance during the Mutiny and was not concluded till 1860. Indirectly it was one of the means of saving India by the diversion of the troops intended for the Far East, and already at Singapore, to the relief of Bengal at the urgent summons of Lord Canning, the Governor-General of India. The first mention of the outbreak in Punch followed close on the tragedy of Meerut early in May. In his "Essence of Parliament" we read:— Lord Ellenborough delivered an alarmist speech about the mutinies in our Indian Army. Among other terrors, he was hideously afraid that Lord Canning, the Governor-General, had been taking some step which showed that he thought Christianity a true religion, but this damaging accusation was happily explained away. Lord Lansdowne was almost sure that Lord Canning could not so far have misconducted himself. To be continue in this ebook

This book aims to provide an account of both what and how onomatopoeia communicate by applying ideas from the relevance theoretic framework of utterance interpretation. It focuses on two main aspects of the topic: the contribution that onomatopoeia make to communication and the nature of multimodal communication. This is applied in three domains (food discourse, visual culture in Asia and translation) in the final sections of the book. It will be of interest to scholars working in the fields of pragmatics, semantics, cognitive linguistics, stylistics, philosophy of language, literature, translation, and Asian studies.

[Siren Menage Everlasting: Erotic Romance, Menage a Quatre, Paranormal, Shape-shifter, MFMM, HEA] Book 3: Shining Beacons - When Dusty Cutter heard her step-brother’s evil plans for her, she packed a bag and hightailed it out of Tucson, Arizona. She suffered more than enough at his hands and isn’t about to let him ruin her life. Broden, Archer, and Airen Higgens didn’t think they’d ever meet their mate, until they entered the Ambrose hotel. As soon as they saw her gorgeous face and scented her fragrance, they knew she was theirs. Broden and his brothers end up saving Dusty’s life when she has an allergic reaction and goes into anaphylactic shock. After treating her, they take her back to their home to recover, and while their inner Kodiak bears are eager to mate with her, the men know she needs to get used to them first. When they reveal what they are, Dusty thinks they’re lying until they show her otherwise. Even though she’s worried trouble is going to follow her to Ambrose, she can’t resist the three, big, sexy men and she agrees to be their mate. And then all hell breaks loose. Book 4: Precious Angel - Kenzie Howard is devastated when her abusive father sells her to a pimp for money, but when she hears the plans for her, she’s terrified. She manages to escape by stealing a car, but doesn’t get far before the pain of being used as a punching bag gets too much. Jayson Cannon is horrified at finding his mate unconscious, bruised, and battered in a car on the side of the road just outside of Ambrose, North Dakota. He calls in the doc and his brothers, Jordan and Jenson, to help him get their mate back to his home. The three brothers are worried about how they’re going to explain to their mate that they’re panther shifters, but that ends up being the least of their concerns when they have to claim their mate to save her life. Just when their relationship is strengthening, danger comes to Ambrose and Kenzie goes missing. Jayson, Jenson, and Jordan hope they aren’t going to be too late to rescue the love of their lives. Becca Van is a Siren-exclusive author.

The couple was blessed with two children who have accompanied Beverly on some of her journeys. Other friends have also enjoyed traveling with her from time to time. Her many pastor friends in India, as Christian believers, were the original recipients of the letters printed in this book, Epistles to India with Love, Volume 2. You will read some of them in this volume. David Stanly, a licensed clinical worker in the state of Maine, senior pastor of Grace Assembly of God makes the following comments. “Beverly is an authentic, passionate and committed missionary who has labored relentlessly in the largest mission field in the world—India—since the late 1980’s. I have personally witnessed countless lives touched and transformed by the love of Christ through her. She is a walking epistle of Biblical truths. “These letters will take you deep into Indian culture from the bustling cities to the smallest of mountain villages.”
