In 1954 Aldous Huxley's hugely influential book "The Doors of Perception" was published. Huxley's title is taken from William Blake's 1793 book "The Marriage of Heaven and Hell". In this Blake makes the following observation: "If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, Infinite. For man has closed himself up, till he sees all things thro' narrow chinks of his cavern." Opening the Doors to Perception will update Huxley's work and suggest process and procedures whereby man can, indeed, perceive reality in its true glory. The book will be in two sections. The first will discuss in great detail a concept I first introduced in my book The Daemon: A Guide to Your Extraordinary Secret Self. I termed this the "scale of transcendence" and suggested that there is a scale of perceptions whereby the doors of perception are slowly opened and, bit by bit, they reveal the true nature of "reality" as suggested by most esoteric teachings and mystic traditions. Most human beings perceive the doors as being securely closed. However there are occasions when the doors become slightly ajar and allow fleeting glimpses of what the Gnostics called "The Pleroma". For "normal" people these glimpses are experienced during fleeting "noetic" experiences. However for others the doors are prized upon by certain neurological processes starting with migraine and progressing through various "alteredstates" such as temporal lobe epilepsy, bi-polar syndrome, autism and finally, when the doors are fully open, schizophrenia.

A manual for opening the doors of perception and directly engaging the intelligence of the Natural World • Provides exercises to directly perceive and interact with the complex, living, self-organizing being that is Gaia • Reveals that every life form on Earth is highly intelligent and communicative • Examines the ecological function of invasive plants, bacterial resistance to antibiotics, psychotropic plants and fungi, and the human species In Plant Intelligence and the Imaginal Realm, Stephen Harrod Buhner reveals that all life forms on Earth possess intelligence, language, a sense of I and not I, and the capacity to dream. He shows that by consciously opening the doors of perception, we can reconnect with the living intelligences in Nature as kindred beings, become again wild scientists, nondomesticated explorers of a Gaian world just as Goethe, Barbara McClintock, James Lovelock, and others have done. For as Einstein commented, “We cannot solve the problems facing us by using the same kind of thinking that created them.” Buhner explains how to use analogical thinking and imaginal perception to directly experience the inherent meanings that flow through the world, that are expressed from each living form that surrounds us, and to directly initiate communication in return. He delves deeply into the ecological function of invasive plants, bacterial resistance to antibiotics, psychotropic plants and fungi, and, most importantly, the human species itself. He shows that human beings are not a plague on the planet, they have a specific ecological function as important to Gaia as that of plants and bacteria. Buhner shows that the capacity for depth connection and meaning-filled communication with the living world is inherent in every human being. It is as natural as breathing, as the beating of our own hearts, as our own desire for intimacy and love. We can change how we think and in so doing begin to address the difficulties of our times.

Many of us sense that God is with us in our daily lives but can't put words to the longings we feel, and most churches and synagogues aren't helping us. If we still go to church, we wonder why we are still there and feel we've lost the connections between the faith we practice on Sunday morning and a passionate life in the everyday world. Using Carlo Carretto's definition of spirituality as "a way of thinking, living and sanctifying our lives," Rowthorn shows how we can uncover an authentic faith for our times. To be passionately engaged, all we need to do is take the ordinary acts of our lives and see them differently. We have only to unwrap the gifts we already hold in our hands--the people we meet, the places we go, and the choices we make about work, children, friendships, politics, the arts, and hospitality.

William Blake’s series of illustrations for Dante’s Divine Comedy was his last major project and a summation of his religious and artistic beliefs. Blake intended to engrave this series, but it was unfinished at his death. The series includes seven partially complete engravings and 102 works in various stages of completion—some of the most beautiful pictures of his career. These pictures are not simple illustrations, but constitute a thorough reinterpretation and—in Blake’s view—correction of Dante’s poem. This book compares the two men’s theological and artistic views and analyzes in detail the meaning of Blake’s illustrations, for the first time introducing their theological and aesthetic exuberance to a modern audience.
