How does one write about Spiritual Success and preserve any sense of humility? “Spiritual Success and How I Achieved It” has been the tongue in cheek working title of this book. It serves to remind me that I know so very little. The irreverence serves to caution against the arrogance of pretending to know anything at all. None of this book is actually new. As Robert Webber used to remind us, the ancient is the future.1 Those to whom I am indebted include a long line of teachers reaching back to the early church fathers. I have had several excellent mentors and many tremendous teachers and professors. They all have helped connect me to the rich heritage that we have in Jesus Christ.

The simplicity of the gospel of Christ is that the just came to die for the unjust, the sinless for the sinful and the worthy for the unworthy. The devil was thus defeated and robbed of the right to drag people to hell without their permission, because the ultimate penalty had been paid. The present day difficulty is that the truth of the gospel is not reaching those that it should been reaching. The people are being presented with the beauty of fellowship and not the opportunity to be saved. It is not right to make people think that they can have fellowship with one another without introduction to the one who died for the church to be born. Our fellowship is to be based on the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ and His work. The danger today is that the local church is filled with those who glorified fellowship above the gospel of truth bringing them to the salvation of their souls. Without the experiential knowledge of Christ as Lord and Master, there is no fellowship. The scripture says "That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ" (1 John 1:3). The priority of the Church should be to give everyman the opportunity to take the appropriate steps to salvation based on informed knowledge. The traditional pulpits along the streets, by way of Personal Evangelism, have disappeared except in the third world where they still appear occasionally. Despite the limitations imposed by our civilisation and the legal protection of individual rights, the truth must be told, through available media, so that people will know that God had taken care of the sin debt, which is death. The world must know that judgment and death cannot be wished away by our regular church attendance, by living a moral life, and by our special philanthropically concocted adventures. The only power over judgment and death is that which the son of God had done on the cross of Calvary. He paid the penalty of death so that by the acceptance of that which has been done we will be reconciled to God. Since the time of the death on the cross the shout of victory has been sounding louder and louder that the battle against sin, death and Satan has been won by the Lord Jesus Christ who died for the world. "The imitators" is a book that sets about bringing the message of reconciliation to people with emphasis on the call to salvation and discipleship according to the Great Commission. When the Lord gave the Great Commission to the disciples, it was with specific instruction to make converts and also, to disciple the converts... (CONTINUED) Dr. Festus F. Josiah God's Servant.

His eyes must be opened, he must pierce through the veil of Maya, at least sufficiently to rate earthly things at their true value, for from Viveka is born the second of the qualifications--Vairagya. I have already pointed out to you that a man must begin to train himself in separation from action as regards its fruit. He must train himself to do action as a duty without continually looking for any sort of personal gain. That training we will suppose has been carried out by a man certainly for life after life, before the demand is made on him which he must answer to a very considerable extent before Initiation is possible, that he shall become definitely indifferent to earthly objects. Indifference to earthly objects, indifference to worldly objects, Vairagya, is the second of the qualifications in the probationary path of chelaship. He has developed Viveka and, as we have seen, this means the discrimination between the real and the unreal, between the transitory and the permanent. And as reality and permanency make themselves felt in the man's mind, it is inevitable that worldly objects shall lose their attraction, and that he shall become definitely indifferent to them. When the real is seen the unreal is so unsatisfactory; when the permanent is recognized, if only for a moment, the transitory seems so little worth striving after; in the probationary path all the objects around us lose their attractive power, and it is no longer an effort for the man to turn away from them; it is no longer by deliberate effort of the will that he does not permit himself to work for fruit. The objects have no longer an attraction in themselves; the root of desire is gradually perishing, and these objects, as it is said in...

The Gospel of Mark portrays Jesus making impossible demands on his disciples. They must follow him even if it costs them their lives. And, unsurprisingly, this proves to be impossible for them to do. They fail drastically in Mark's narrative and run from the scene as Jesus is arrested. Peter had been determined to stay by him unto death, but even he was not able to admit to knowing Jesus at that crucial moment. The strange thing is that Jesus made it clear that it is impossible to enter the Kingdom of God without this sort of radical discipleship. In this narrative study of salvation in the Gospel of Mark, this conundrum is studied closely with surprising results. An investigation of various socio-historical aspects of Mark's background elucidate the connection that Mark makes between the death of Jesus and the following of the disciples. And a study of Mark's narrative as a whole shows that Mark provides hope for those without courage to follow. If they continue to look and listen carefully, the mystery will be unveiled to them.

Jesus tells us that to be his disciple we must surrender everything and, with his grace, brave the path provided for us by God. Such a sojourn will surely be marked by joy, suffering, uncertainty, and—above all—adventure. Accordingly, The Adventure of Discipleship presents the Gospel through the lens of great adventure stories—from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia to popular adventure movies, comic book superheroes, and TV series. While these stories we create and read and retell are but reflections and refractions of the great adventure of discipleship, they provide us with genuine insight into life with Christ. Author Daniel Keating shows why we must respond to the call of discipleship with venturesome faith, as many great saints have before us. Along the way of discipleship, we come to understand the cost of following Jesus, the importance of hope in light of setbacks, and the gift of true friendship in this great adventure.

Scripture makes it clear that when a person receives Christ as Savior and Lord, he or she is a new creation; the old is literally gone, and something entirely new has taken its place. Accepting Jesus' call to discipleship represents a foundational change in a disciple's identity, meaning, and purpose-as well as the way a disciple understands the world. The Call answers the question "Who am I as a disciple of Christ?" It begins by exploring who Jesus really is before walking through the priorities of a disciple, the cost of a disciple, and the fruit of a disciple. Far too often we neglect to teach that following Christ is costly. True discipleship could end up costing everything, but it is worth that and more. Like all the releases in the Disciples Path series. The Call uses teaching, questions, conversation, exercise, and individual study to facilitate transformational discipleship. As you work through this story, you will: Gain a greater understanding of discipleship by examining the way Jesus discipled. Understand the lordship of Jesus and a greater sense of identity in Christ. Realize how a disciple interacts with and responds to the world. Learn key biblical passages addressing what it means to follow Jesus. Know the cost and true value of following Jesus. Disciples Path is a series of resources founded on Jesus' model of discipleship. Created by experienced disciple-makers across the nation, it offers an intentional pathway for transformation discipleship and a way to help followers of Christ move from new disciples to mature disciple-makers.
