Ending School Violence: Solutions from America's Youth provides the framework and action steps necessary to reduce all kinds of youth violence. First, it explains, from a student's perspective, what violence truly is and how it begins. Students shared with us that violence in their eyes what primarily non-physical and resulted from the breakdown of relationships with their school. Next, the book details how we are all connected in our school and community and how everyone has the potential to affect the entire community. Third, it shows how communication connects the community and how strong communication builds relationships. Finally, the book details how every person (student, educator, parent, and community leader) can use their strong relationships to prevent violence and become a Life Winner through their actions and attitude. Ending School Violence was heavily researched and combines input from thousands of youth across America, leading education and psychology experts, all combined into a step-by-step reader friendly book that takes a practical approach to ending violence. Recently this book was the feature story in Counseling Today Magazine and it has started a nationwide movement of empowering youth to prevent all kinds of violence in their school and community. Jason now delivers powerful programs for educators, students, and communities on preventing violence.

School violence is a burning issue these days. This book provides an in-depth analysis of violence prevention programs and an assessment of their effectiveness, using data from observations, individual interviews, and focus groups, as well as published data from the schools. It is distinguished by its focus on the cultural and structural context of school violence and violence prevention efforts. Where most other researchers use quantitative measures, such as surveys, to assess the effectiveness of violence prevention programs, the authors of this book use qualitative research and ethnography to study the environment where such programs take place. Thus, this work--one of only a few ethnographic studies of violence prevention programs in schools--links previous quantitative research on the topic and critical ethnography. Preventing Violence in Schools: A Challenge to American Democracy: *includes voices of school students, accused of practicing violence, who have been participants in violence prevention programs; *analyzes a citywide peer mediation program (who benefits and who does not, who is mediated and who mediates, and what the implications of these findings may be); *examines the kinds of violence recognized in schools and the ways schools themselves may perpetuate violence; and *describes a violence prevention program for students at an alternative school. Preventing Violence in Schools: A Challenge to American Democracy is highly relevant for students in courses on urban education, foundations of education, education and social policy, youth and the law, and qualitative research, and for teachers, administrators, and other professionals, such as school psychologists and guidance counselors, at the middle and high school levels.

This publication, resulting from a survey of more than 2,000 school districts, focuses on school violence and ways to prevent it. Section 1 discusses both the problem of school violence and also the critical role that school boards must play in keeping schools safe. This section also includes information about how school boards can develop policies to combat school violence and information on how boards can obtain sample policies to use as models. Section 2 includes brief descriptions of the more than 700 violence prevention programs used by school districts. These prevention tips are organized into 30 categories (e.g., closed campus for lunch, dress code, gun-free school zones, metal detectors, staff development). Each tip includes: (1) a 15-40 word description of the specific program or activity, based on information provided by the school district; (2) whether the school district is located in an urban, suburban, or rural area; and (3) a contact person and telephone number, if one was provided. Section 3 includes basic information on the school districts that participated in the survey. Districts are listed alphabetically by state. Information in this section, all provided by the school districts, includes the school district name, mailing address, and other pertinent information such as district size and type. The third section also serves as an index to section 2, listing the page numbers on which violence prevention measures from that district appear. (GLR)

In the wake of Columbine and 9/11, schools are now highly challenged to provide the harmonious environment of learning that is their obligation. Many school administrators are hard pressed to keep updated safety plans in the wake of every possible crisis. What exactly is the plan of action when there is a shootout? Does the intervention plan differ if the shooter is a student or a parent? What is the plan of action in the event of bio-terrorism? This book provides the answers to these critical questions. This step-by-step guide helps put in place a plan for each of these scenarios that we hope never to face again, but unfortunately are likely to. "This book, written by a school district administrator, is essential in imparting knowledge and in helping any school or district plan for arresting safety issues before they become dire problems and effectively responding when an incident occurs." - Diana Ohman, Director, Department of Defense Education Activity
