' Quantum computation and information is a new, rapidly developing interdisciplinary field. Therefore, it is not easy to understand its fundamental concepts and central results without facing numerous technical details. This book provides the reader a useful and not-too-heavy guide. It offers a simple and self-contained introduction; no previous knowledge of quantum mechanics or classical computation is required. Volume I may be used as a textbook for a one-semester introductory course in quantum information and computation, both for upper-level undergraduate students and for graduate students. It contains a large number of solved exercises, which are an essential complement to the text, as they will help the student to become familiar with the subject. The book may also be useful as general education for readers who want to know the fundamental principles of quantum information and computation and who have the basic background acquired from their undergraduate course in physics, mathematics, or computer science. Keywords:Quantum Computation;Quantum Information;Quantum Algorithms;Quantum Communication;Quantum Cryptography;Complex Systems;Dynamical Systems;Quantum Chaos;Nanoscience;Quantum OpticsReviews:“The book by Benenti, Casati and Strini is an excellent introduction to the fascinating field of quantum computation and information. The reader is gently introduced to this field starting from the basics in computation and quantum mechanics to the more advanced topics of quantum computation of dynamical systems. The book is written in a very clear way, accessible both to undergraduate and graduate students in physics, computer science and engineering.”Rosario Fazio Scuola Normale Superiore Pisa, Italy “The first volume of the present textbook aims at filling the gap between elementary introductory books and more advanced reference manuals. The choice of topics and the emphasis on concepts rather than mathematical technicalities makes it good choice for an introductory course of Quantum Information Theory for physicists or computer scientists with little background in this area. Of particular interest is the description of the links between quantum computation and quantum chaos, a research area in which the authors are leading experts, a topic rarely treated in introductory textbooks. The present volume is a welcomed addition to the existing choice of textbooks in quantum information theory and quantum computation.”Professor G Massimo Palma University of Milan, Italy “This book gives a clear and exhaustive introduction to quantum computation and quantum communication. Together with the second volume it covers all the main topics in the field of quantum information theory. It is suited for a wide audience, ranging from computer scientists to physicists and engineers. It is an effective self-contained textbook for an introductory course in quantum information theory and a precious tool for researchers who wish to approach the field.”Professor Chiara Macchiavello University of Pavia, Italy “The first volume of the two-volume edition is an introduction to the main concepts of quantum computation and information. The book offers a simple, clear and systematic treatment of qubits, quantum gates, various quantum algorithms and quantum communication. The chapters on classical information theory and quantum mechanics make the book easy to read. The book is recommended to undergraduate as well as graduate students in physics, mathematics and computer science. The large number of exercises is supplemented by solutions. The reader is encouraged for active work.”Professor Ioannis Antoniou Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece “Besides giving an excellent introduction to the field it provides a unique perspective on the blending and cross-fertilization between the methods of quantum information and quantum chaos, both areas in which the authors are leading experts.”Marcos Saraceno Comision Nac. de Energia Atomica, Argentina “The authors have done a very good job, succeeding to present the main topics of this domain with remarkable concision and clarity.”Bertrand Georgeot CNRS/Universite Paul Sabatier, France “This book is, on the whole, well-written and readable. The material is presented concisely, and illustrated with simple examples and exercises … the material in the current book is much more compact and easily learned than the phonebook-sized compendium of Nielsen and Chuang. It could serve well as the text for an introductory course … It also contains numerous exercises, which mostly seem well thought out and appropriate to the material presented.”Mathematical Reviews “Reading this book one remarks from the very beginning that it is outstanding and well formulated with both mathematical and verbal respects … This book is didactically well organized and written in a clear language. It can be best recommended to people to whom it is addressed by the authors.”Zentralblatt MATH '

This book aims at presenting the field of Quantum Information Theory in an intuitive, didactic and self-contained way, taking into account several multidisciplinary aspects. Therefore, this books is particularly suited to students and researchers willing to grasp fundamental concepts in Quantum Computation and Quantum Information areas. The field of Quantum Information Theory has increased significantly over the last three decades. Many results from classical information theory were translated and extended to a scenario where quantum effects become important. Most of the results in this area allows for an asymptotically small probability of error to represent and transmit information efficiently. Claude E.Shannon was the first scientist to realize that error-free classical information transmission can be accomplished under certain conditions. More recently, the concept of error-free classical communication was translated to the quantum context. The so-called Quantum Zero-Error Information Theory completes and extends the Shannon Zero-Error Information Theory.

Quantum information science has found great experimental success by exploiting single photons. To date, however, the majority of quantum optical experiments use large-scale (bulk) optical elements bolted down to an optical bench, an approach that ultimately limits the complexity and stability of the quantum circuits required for quantum science and technology. The realization of complex optical schemes involving large numbers of elements requires the introduction of waveguide technology to achieve the desired scalability, stability and miniaturization of the device. This thesis reports on surprising findings in the field of integrated devices for quantum information. Here the polarization of the photon is shown to offer a suitable degree of freedom for encoding quantum information in integrated systems. The most important results concern: the quantum interference of polarization entangled photons in an on-chip directional coupler; the realization of a Controlled-NOT (CNOT) gate operating with polarization qubits; the realization of a quantum walk of bosons and fermions in an ordered optical lattice and the quantum simulation of Anderson localization of bosons and fermions simulated by polarization entangled photons in a disordered quantum walk. The findings presented in this thesis represent an important step towards the integration of a complete quantum photonic experiment in a chip.

"During the last ten years Quantum Information Processing and Communication (QIPC) has established itself as one of the new hot topic fields in physics, with the potential to revolutionize many areas of science and technology. QIPC replaces the laws of classical physics applied to computation and communication with the more fundamental laws of quantum mechanics. This becomes increasingly important due to technological progress going down to smaller and smaller scales where quantum effects start to be dominant. In addition to its fundamental nature, QIPC promises to advance computing power beyond the capabilities of any classical computer, to guarantee secure communication and establish direct links to emerging quantum technologies, such as, for example, quantum based sensors and clocks. One of the outstanding feature of QIPC is its interdisciplinary character: it brings together researchers from physics, mathematics and computer science. In particular, within physics we have seen the emergence of a new QIPC community, which ranges from theoretical to experimental physics, and crosses boundaries of traditionally separated disciplines such as atomic physics, quantum optics, statistical mechanics and solid state physics, all working on different and complementary aspects of QIPC. This publication covers the following topics: Introduction to quantum computing; Quantum logic, information and entanglement; Quantum algorithms; Error-correcting codes for quantum computations; Quantum measurements and control; Quantum communication; Quantum optics and cold atoms for quantum information; Quantum computing with solid state devices; Theory and experiments for superconducting qubits; Interactions in many-body systems: quantum chaos, disorder and random matrices; Decoherence effects for quantum computing; and Flature prospects of quantum information processing."

This book provides an introduction into the fundamentals of non-relativistic quantum mechanics. In Part 1, the essential principles are developed. Applications and extensions of the formalism can be found in Part 2. The book includes not only material that is presented in traditional textbooks on quantum mechanics, but also discusses in detail current issues such as interaction-free quantum measurements, neutrino oscillations, various topics in the field of quantum information as well as fundamental problems and epistemological questions, such as the measurement problem, entanglement, Bell's inequality, decoherence, and the realism debate. A chapter on current interpretations of quantum mechanics concludes the book. To develop quickly and clearly the main principles of quantum mechanics and its mathematical formulation, there is a systematic change between wave mechanics and algebraic representation in the first chapters. The required mathematical tools are introduced step by step. Moreover, the appendix collects compactly the most important mathematical tools that supplementary literature can be largely dispensed. In addition, the appendix contains advanced topics, such as Quantum- Zeno effect, time-delay experiments, Lenz vector and the Shor algorithm. About 250 exercises, most of them with solutions, help to deepen the understanding of the topics.
