Quest for Harmony provides a basic understanding of the cultures and spiritual teachings of four Native American nations--Lenape (Delaware), Ani'-Yun'-wiya (Cherokee), Lakota (Sioux), and Dine (Navajo). The text is always sympathetic, respectful, and, when possible, presented in the voices of Native Americans. Each nation is described in terms of its name, traditional location(s), present population, language, and traditional social organization. At least one story of origin is provided for each nation, followed by a survey of its history from earliest documented times until recent times. At the heart of each chapter, the spiritual worldview and rituals of the nation being discussed are introduced, with sections on cosmology, gods and spirits, rituals, and other issues particular to that nation. Critical issues common to Native Americans such as the pannational spiritual movements and the environment are also covered. Quest for Harmony makes clear that not only are Native American spiritual traditions very much alive, they are also in the midst of a dramatic revival.

Anthony Parel affords a new perspective on the philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi. He explores how Gandhi connected the spiritual with the temporal. Parel shows how Gandhi, drawing on the Indian time-honoured theory of the purusharthas or 'the aims of life', fitted his ethical, political, aesthetic and religious ideas together. In this way Gandhi challenged the notion which prevailed in Indian society that a rift existed between the secular and the spiritual, the political and the contemplative life.

In this long-awaited ethnography, Chuan-kang Shih details the traditional social and cultural conditions of the Moso, a matrilineal group living on the border of Yunnan and Sichuan Provinces in southwest China. Among the Moso, a majority of the adult population practice a visiting system called tisese instead of marriage as the normal sexual and reproductive institution. Until recently, tisese was noncontractual, nonobligatory, and nonexclusive. Partners lived and worked in separate households. The only prerequisite for a tisese relationship was a mutual agreement between the man and the woman to allow sexual access to each other. In a comprehensive account, Quest for Harmony explores this unique practice specifically, and offers thorough documentation, fine-grained analysis, and an engaging discussion of the people, history, and structure of Moso society. Drawing on the author's extensive fieldwork, conducted from 1987 to 2006, this is the first ethnography of the Moso written in English.

In The Quest for Meaning, Tariq Ramadan, philosopher and Islamic scholar, invites the reader to join him on a journey to the deep ocean of religious, secular, and indigenous spiritual traditions to explore the most pressing contemporary issues. Along the way, Ramadan interrogates the concepts that frame current debates including: faith and reason, emotions and spirituality, tradition and modernity, freedom, equality, universality, and civilization. He acknowledges the greatest flashpoints and attempts to bridge divergent paths to a common ground between these religious and intellectual traditions. He calls urgently for a deep and meaningful dialogue that leads us to go beyond tolerant co-existence to mutual respect and enrichment. Written in a both direct and meditative style this is an important, timely and intelligent book that aims to direct and shape debate around the most important questions of our time.

Heaven is here, with us, all the time and we can access it at any moment. The only problem is that we are not aware of that possibility. Everybody would like to get in Paradise and spend the rest of the existence over there but, we dont have to go anywhere because Paradise is right here and we can start entering here and right now. We dont have to pass any test or evaluation process, but we do have to work hard to overcome the main obstacle in our way: matter. The problems of being and the existence, in general, are usually very complicated issues to handle, but they are so mainly because of those, trying to rule over the search of the truth, with no real understanding of it and, even more, with very fundamental problems to communicate anything, have and are distorting and complicating things around, to the point we have to become professional philosophers, for instance, to try to understand the complications of philosophers that they, themselves, arent able to understand. Not to talk about politics and religion. But, the truth is much simpler than that, and everyone can access his own truth, with the only inconvenience that it touches his relationship with his material life. Harmony and Matter is a new perspective that might help see a little clearer the panorama of life all human beings are confronted with and all the ocean of confusion and chaos of ideas, mostly interested in preserving a material status of a very little spiritual existence that, in any case, is also very little important in the context of Universal life. Everyone would like to know, also, some tips to live the best possible life and, Harmony, as the essence of the Universe, is the only answer we can find. Here youll find the reasons why. Life is, certainly, not easy but is perfectly possible to find a recipe for a happy, healthier and creative life. There have been many attempts, in the past, to get to a comprehensive formula for happiness, from very different perspectives, and we can use as many as we want because most of them could be very useful. Harmony and Matter is just another one, from a very contemporary perspective, trying to dissect the relationship between matter and spirit, so basic in our daily life, in the most simple and clear possible way. Reality is present with us, all the time, and we have no choice than trying to understand it the best we can, in order to live a better life. The “rise of China” has become a ubiquitous and often menacing term in global politics. China’s Quest for Global Order: From Peaceful Rise to Harmonious World, by Rosita Dellios, PhD, and R. James Ferguson, PhD, examines how China’s leadership has responded to this depiction and the strategic approaches that have been developed to ameliorate threat perceptions. Borrowing from its own Confucian heritage to promote a harmonious world policy, China’s contribution to world order is likely to be more robust than the “responsible stakeholder” epithet upon which the West has pinned its collective hopes. The book interprets China’s quest for global order from Chinese perspectives, old and new, and provides the relevant philosophical and historical background to engage the reader in the ensuing debates.

Before the totalitarian reign of Mao Zedong and his immediate successors, never in human history had an entire nation been under such intense surveillance. The Chinese not only had to speak alike; they had to think alike. Traveling to China regularly since 1967, and spending all of 2005 and 2006 there, Guy Sorman saw it all, and in this jaw-dropping book, he documents the horrifying stories of China through the 21st century. He shows how the Party's primary concern is not improving the lives of the downtrodden; it seeks power more than it seeks social development. It expends extraordinary energy in suppressing Chinese freedoms-the media operate under suffocating censorship, and political opposition can result in expulsion or prison-even as it tries to seduce the West, which has conferred greater legitimacy on it than do the Chinese themselves.

Before Pier Giorgio Di Cicco was made Poet Laureate of Toronto (2004-2007), he was instrumental in the establishment of Italian-Canadian literature as a phenomenon in Canadian culture. He achieved this through his own impressive list of publications such as The Tough Romance (1979) and Virgin Science (1986). He also encouraged many other young writers across Canada to publish and participate in the transformation of Canada's national literature into one of many colours and voices. The essays in this volume examine Di Cicco's publications in this pluralistic social context. The contributors include Linda Hutcheon, Mary di Michele, George Elliott Clarke, Domenic Beneventi, Licia Canton, Joshua Lovelace, Stacey Gibson, Jim Zucchero, Clea Mc- Dougall and Joseph Pivato. There is also an interview and a useful bibliography.
