A modular in-line rheometer (ILR) has been designed for a co-rotating twin screw extruder for the rheological characterisation of reactive and non-reactive polyolefin systems. Extruder instrumentation has been enhanced and a computer interface added in order to enable collection of vital machine and process parameters, in real time, using high frequency data acquisition software. The ILR has been designed as an extruder die allowing polymer shear rate to be controlled via extruder mass throughput and/or flow channel geometry changes. Shear viscosity is computed from the pressure drop developed over known rectangular die geometry. Modular construction allows distinct sections to be easily dismantled in-situ. Consequently, the flow channel geometry is machined into a removable insert. Channel dimension can thus be manipulated without the need to remove either the rheometer from the extruder, or the instrumentation body from the screw transition section. Rheometer instrumentation is fully computer interfaced, allowing real time viscosity measurement. In-line rheological measurements have been made on both pure, and peroxide cross-linked, linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE). The results have been compared with those obtained off-line using a capillary rheometer and GPC techniques. Inferences on the use of an ILR and its performance, in both reactive and non-reactive environments, have been drawn, together with an insight into the relationship between extruder and process variables in conjunction with reaction efficiency.

Discusses various technological methods of reactive processing of polymers with a special emphasis on production of large size articles. Also shows methods of scaling up from laboratory to production stage by a combination of process modeling and application of modern analytical techniques to evaluate similarity of production on different scales. This approach not only gives objective results required for precise evaluation of process kinetics, but it is applied in the book to real systems used as examples of model application. The book begins with a discussion of the chemistry of reactive processes that are then discussed from the point of view of their modeling. In the next section, analytical control methods are evaluated for their usefulness in process monitoring. The final chapter discusses details of various technological methods of reactive processing by means of 70 diagrams. It also describes how to control and introduce new processes without long trials, and design technology that is cost-efficient and environmentally friendly.
