A New York Times Notable Book: A renowned scholar explores the way we eat across cultures and throughout history. From the wild parties of ancient Greece to the strictures of an Upper East Side meal to the ritualistic feasts of cannibals, Margaret Visser takes us on a fascinating journey through the diverse practices, customs, and taboos that define how and why we prepare and consume food the way we do. With keen insights into small details we take for granted, such as the origins of forks and chopsticks or why tablecloths exist, and examinations of broader issues like the economic implications of dining etiquette, Visser scrutinizes table manners across eras and oceans, offering an intimate new understanding of eating both as a biological necessity and a cultural phenomenon. Witty and impeccably researched, The Rituals of Dinner is a captivating blend of folklore, sociology, history, and humor. In the words of the New York Times Book Review, “Read it, because you’ll never look at a table knife the same way again.”

It is no secret that the United States is facing an obesity epidemic with the obesity rates continuing to rise year after year. According to the Center for Disease Control, one third of Americans are now obese. It is no longer sufficient to simply point out the health risks of obesity to our patients as the reason to lose weight. Patients are seeking guidance in terms of what specific diet plan to follow and what foods should be eaten. There are thousands of diets on the market with new ones introduced daily. Not all diet plans have proven results, nor will they work for every patient. More importantly, not all diets marketed to the public are safe to follow for an extended timeframe. In fact, research shows us that diet composition is not the key to long term success, but compliance to a calorie deficient diet is the solution. So how does one choose which diet plan to recommend to patients? Finally, a book for clinicians is here to help answer this question. This book provides information to help patients understand several different research proven diets on the market today including: the Atkins diet, the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet, the I diet, the Mediterranean diet, Paleo Diets, South Beach, Vegetarian diets, Weight Watchers, and the Zone diet. Each diet is carefully and thoroughly reviewed in this book by some of America’s top obesity medicine and weight management specialists to provide health practitioners a knowledge of the diet composition, current research evaluating the diet, typical weight loss results, the pros and cons of the diet as well as which patients would most benefit from each diet plan. This book provides the necessary tools for clinicians to feel comfortable discussing several of the more popular and scientifically researched diets with patients. This book offers solid information to advise patients, based on their specific health history, on which diet will afford the greatest chance for success.

Ho Ho Uh-Oh! Can They Make the Best of an Accidental Noel? This wasn’t the Christmas either Kiernan or Bexley expected. Snowbound in a shoddy convenience store with the least hospitable storekeeper in the state of Wyoming, two other stranded travelers, four kids forgotten by Santa – oh, yes, and each other. Because there was that thing that happened last summer. A mistake. They both thought that… though for different reasons. And agreeing it was a mistake didn’t make it any more comfortable to run into each other at the ranch of their mutual friends, the Curricks of the Slash-C Ranch. Especially when those same friends suggest, nudge, and push them into traveling East together to join their respective families for Christmas by spending eighteen hours in a car together. Except they never made it out of Wyoming, thanks to an early-arriving blizzard. And now their choice is to have one of the least festive Christmases on record or work with what they have and each other to make this a real Christmas for those kids … and maybe discover what Santa has in mind for them. Making Christmas, another installment in USA Today bestselling author Patricia McLinn's Wyoming Wildflowers series, is a fun, feel-good, moving contemporary romance that will captivate fans of RaeAnne Thayne, Barbara Freethy and Debbie Macomber. In the short span of 17 years, the first 17 years of his life, he was known as Peter Korytowski, Pierre Engglenger and Pierre Boivin, depending on who was hunting him at the time. Nine years old and his world had collapsed. It was 1940 and Hitler had unleashed the Blitzkrieg—bombs were exploding all around him, changing everything. This moment of terror catapulted him into an epic nine-year adventure during the Second World War. He was forced to abandon his home, his family and his childhood. Like a bad dream from which he could not awake, he began an alternate existence—that of a refugee, prey for the Nazis, part of old French nobility, a resistance participant and a rebellious orphan. But most of all, he learned how to be a survivor.

Hundreds of books have been published about the atrocities that occurred in World War II. Now it is time to complete the story by telling the other side – the story of a non-Jewish girl and what she endured. The fact that Adolf Hitler attempted to annihilate the Jewish race has been rightfully taught to subsequent generations to insure that something as heinous as The Holocaust is never repeated. Unfortunately, many people have mistakenly assumed that the entire German population was in line with the Nazi dogma and shared Hitler’s irrational hatred and diabolical solutions. Friedl tells another side of the story. Her true story shows many beliefs to be quite wrong. Friedl’s story is divided into two parts, which helps the reader absorb the duality of her wartime experiences. Book One relates to her childhood years and her loving family, her musical development, her orders to leave her music and work in support of the war effort, her conscription into the Nazi Army and her many horrible wartime experiences far, far from home. In Book Two, Friedl begins her post-war journey home. We travel with her as far as the train tracks allow and then she begins to walk and hitchhike. As she reaches the American Army controlled border, she, as all returning Germans did, is detained until all formal paperwork is completed and entrance into Germany is authorized. This begins a six-week-plus adventure, not knowing if her family has survived, during which she is “adopted” by a German farm couple who had recently lost a daughter and a growing friendship with a German-speaking American Sergeant Jackson. Finally her entrance into her homeland is authorized. Through her eyes we travel on the final leg of her journey to Frankfurt while viewing the horror, destruction, and shambles of the former “most perfectly preserved medieval city,” her beloved Frankfurt.

The Sacred Foodways of Film explores the ways by which the portrayal of food in film offers creative spaces for theological insight. From the Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg produced title The Hundred-Foot Journey (2014) to the Oscar Best Foreign Language Film winner from Japan Departures (2008), eleven diverse films invite us to taste and see the mutually enriching blend of food and faith depicted onscreen. Smithsonian magazine describes the last two decades as "The Era of Crazed Oral Gratification." The explosion of interest in food culture, what is touted as the "foodie revolution," is evident across media platforms in the United States as well as in many other parts of the world. Curiously, there has not been a book specifically dedicated to the confluence of theology/religion and food films. The Sacred Foodways of Film is a timely contribution to this fascinating area of interest that has long been simmering on the stovetop of scholarship.
